DF General Discussion / Re: Show us your entrance
« on: January 31, 2017, 08:16:08 pm »
It's hard to define where the entrance of Tometowers is precisely, since its predominantly separate surface buildings spread all the way up a mountain.

Spoiler: Overview (click to show/hide)
Trade Plaza is a mess right now as I'm tearing it up to replace the rock salt with microcline so it all matches. I guess the true entrance would be Central Plaza, since that's where you leave the switchback road and enter the residential district, the warehouses, Hall of Industry, and the bastion. As well as eventually a dining hall, and the temples and library. Also no foreigners (outside of diplomats) will ever have reason to go beyond the tavern at the bottom of the slope.

Spoiler: Undergound peek (click to show/hide)
The Hall of Industry to the left, the entrance to the kitchens below it, and to the right the entrance to the warehouses and the emergency bunker beneath.

View of the road, trade plaza, tavern, guest houses and tower. Upper floors of the tower are rooms for Hammerer and Captain of the Guard, several levels underground are the cells. Trade Depot is black bronze if I remember right. Guest houses have new doors after the wildfire of 8 destroyed the old ones.

A scenic climb up the mountain, with the memorial shrine to Zasit, greatest Axe Lord of his time in the foreground.

Spoiler: Residential District (click to show/hide)
The first of the apartments is going up now, soon the non-noteworthy population will have their own rooms too.
One of our honored founders perished fighting a forgotten beast, his house (and tomb) has been sealed, and will remain exactly as he left it. It's the one with gold statues of him out front.

Put something that shoots back? Like fire imps.

Turns out sticking a 60000 dorfbuck artifact armor stand in the king's overlapping rooms was all it took to shot them all up to royal status. Cranking out platinum furniture in the hopes if he has everything he wants he'll stop demanding so many chains.

Also finished the tower of justice at the bottom of the slope, built a small memorial to an unburiable axelord, and finished paving a switchback road up the mountainside.

Next I think we really, really, need to finally construct proper sleeping and dining arrangements for the general populace.

No one has died recently! It's a nice change. My militia has finally had time to recover after being repeatedly decimated by a combination of fire breathers and callous disregard for proper water safety. I've also finally pretty much almost finished their fortress. No dwarf who risks their life for the good of all will go without proper bedding. Every other non founder though still sleeps in a dorm in the hall outside the warehouses.

Further down the slop the tower of justice is progressing nicely. 16 cells beneath, and quarters for the guard captain and hammerer above. Also finally moved the kitchens inside.

Currently working on well #3. The first two were destroyed by FBs and contaminated by dwarven corpses.  Often both at once. :-\

Edit: Well shit.
I nominated my Founding Administrator, a founder and the broker/bookeeper/manager, to the position of baron some 3 months prior. Relying on his founder's house to tide him over until I can build him his own wing in the palace I will eventually construct. Well he just had a discussion with local rivals and now he's king. I am not prepared for this. I haven't even started the civilian residential district let alone the temples, or the library, or the palace at the peak. Guess that'll have to change.
In the meantime I'm hoping that if I smooth and engrave the microcline deposit that is the bunker he'll stay calm long enough to build an amazing mountaintop palace in record time.

Seriously this one guy, despite a civilian alert and the doors to the tavern being locked decided to waltz on down for some socializing.  ::)
Check your burrow. If there is one tile outside the fort then he might have tried to path to that tile. I had a mob of migrants running in during a civ alert then later found 2 of them huddled outside of a side gate because of this. Lucky guys too, the thralled water buffalo was busy with some undead giant magpies
The bunker in question was a mined out microcline deposit 10z underground. The tavern is on the surface  :-\

Yes, you can do it with DFHack.
I think it's the plants plugin, but if not you'll have to search for it.
The script/plugin can create a shrub or sapling at a desired location, and it can also force a sapling to mature. It didn't seem to work when I tried to replace a placed sapling that had been trampled and removed (via a dirt road) with a new one in the same location, though.
Thus, for an instant boulevard you'd place a sapling, force it to mature, place a new sapling...
Managed to find it! Thanks hugely, I'm off to go learn tree raws  :D

And then a fire breathing FB arrived and flew up the well.
Cue many many deaths among the civilian populace, most notable one of our honored founders a mere 3 years in.  :'(
It cost the lives of 7 of my 10 soldiers, including my best Axe Lord to kill the stupid thing.
And then I guess some schmoe managed to walk all the way back up to the surface while still on fire because then the surface burnt down, with the temple zone looking like the source of the conflagration.
I estimate our losses at 700-800 logs, 6 wooden doors, a horse, as well as countless saplings and fruiting bushes. We seem to have displeased Armok somehow.

The horns sounded as the goblin army crested the hill to swarm down over the town of Tometower.
The residents and guests of the tavern locked and barred the doors just in time as the wave of evil crashed down upon them. One fool blundered into the frustrated invaders and his blood was promptly spilt all over the doors as he pleaded to be let in. Those inside could only cower and wait for it to end.
Meanwhile the rest of the population stampeded up the hill to take shelter in the bunker for the second time that year, only the brave dwarves of the militia headed the other way, charging down from their clifftop perch to assault the invaders below.
In twos and threes they split to charge down their enemies one by one, axes cleaving goblin flesh wherever they swung.
Alas brave Urist, freshly recruited after the savannah titan attack of mere months prior, paid for his inexperience in this, his first and last real battle. The rest of the force regrouped, for a final assault on the goblin archers positioned on the ridge above them. Courageously they charged into a storm of arrows, trusting in their shields and their brothers to defend them. And so it was, the goblin menace was overrun and routed, the day once again saved by these brave few beards to whom we all owe our lives many times over.

Seriously this one guy, despite a civilian alert and the doors to the tavern being locked decided to waltz on down for some socializing.  ::)

Dear spiderdwarves,
What?? How!? I see you climbing back and forth over the cavern lake. Why!? What are you trying to achieve!? There is nothing to do over there. Also stop getting beaten up by giant bats its annoying when your corpses clog the fishing zone.

Sincerely,
Eternally confused management.

PS:
You really should advertise you're the only one in the fort with any weaponsmithing skill. I would have put more effort into rescuing you. Hindsight 20/20 and all that.
Also since all 4 of you managed to die in the lake and also I hate you all please note none of you will be receiving burials or memorials. You can haunt that lake for the rest of time, I don't care. It serves you right.

All in the title. I want some tree lined boulevards and I was hoping there was a way to dfhack in some trees or at least saplings.

New fort, 7 tiles of mountain, 2 of marsh. No surface water, lots of nice cliffs.
Had some scares with drinks to begin with before brewing stabilized and the cavern well was setup but we're largely self sufficient now. We're feeding ourselves at least.
Now I can freely focus on building a mountainside city. I'm looking to have a tiered city.
Depot & guest houses -> tavern -> hall of industry & storage halls -> residential district -> temples (with catacombs beneath) -> library -> palace
Aim is to have everyone living on the surface with labor underground. Hoping we'll end up as the mountainhome eventually.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Cant manage to create a dagger users squad
« on: January 21, 2017, 02:29:33 am »
I think your issue is you aren't manually assigning weapons.

Go to your militia screen, "e" for equipment, "W" for weapon, then the option at the top of the list will be specific weapon.
Select this and you will have a list of every weapon in the fort and you can assign the one you want them to use.

Note that as large daggers are a foreign weapon you won't be able to manufacture any, so you'll need to rely on trading/harvesting enemies for them.
Although I don't know if I've ever seen anyone other than kobolds using them.

Edit:
Also here is the Knife User skill.

Yeah we're also getting pedestals next version, so you can go truly crazy with the museums.

Anyone have any tips on the most reliable way to decapitate goblins? I want a hall of skulls.

Related question, dwarves can see and be afraid/enraged by creatures on z-levels above/below them, will this also work for admiring objects?

I built a monument to my militia consisting of a small pyramid of statues, and while I'm happy with it being pure roleplay it would be nice if they could actually admire the golden dwarves standing over the cowering goblins.
