Just remembered another trick. 
Dig everything you want to hollow out as stairs, then remove them from the top down.

Delete df_linux/libs/libstdc++.so.6
so it uses the library that came with the OS. 
not sure why the linux version ships with that file. I'll open a mantis ticket if there's not already one.

I'd have studied tactician skill, but there doesn't seem to be a way to see it in DT.

Or did worldgen get updated to reflect equipment and tactics? 
And I'd recommend training dwarves up a bit on home turf, with training sessions and wild animals, before sending them out into the world.

I'm another one the 'vanilla linux stability issues' train. 
Mostly due to raids. Sometimes using DT crashes either DT or DF. 
I'm just hoping 44.08 is nigh and stable, so I can do some better raid science.

-Clandestine raids seem to add 1 level of ambusher.

-Combat seems to add a base of 1 level of marksdwarf. Each kill adds another level.

Aaaaaaand crashed. Been a while since last save, too.

This will be an experiment into on-site training vs raiding as a way of training dwarves. 
Two dquads have been randomly set up from low-skill dwarves with no military training. 
Equipment is identical. 
Both squads are set to active/training and given the same barracks. 
One will be sent to kill any animals on the map. The other will be sent on raids.

I'm about to get a science fort running. Just waiting for enough weapons to outfit 2 squads to test against one another (training on-site vs Dwarven field trips). 
There's also some minecart poison science and magma-crab catching going on.

Yeah. Customising announcements.txt takes a while, but it can make life much easier.
