What are the settings so dwarves will always wear armor? Won't they have bad thoughts of this?
]As far as I know it doesn't trigger any bad thoughts.  The extra weight and slower movement are the only downsides.
Some dwarves might get bad thoughts about not being able to acquire something new/wear something fancy as they won't wear anything not explicitly part of their uniform, and since armor won't degrade over time like clothing does they won't be equiping new stuff very often after a certain point. Wearing armor doesn't itself cause any, though.

Goblins just sent a force of 70+ soldiers to ask for my mayor's unremarkable iron battle axe with a name. I gave it to them because it was about time for him to upgrade his weaponry. Still, the largest force of goblins I've seen since unretiring and they ask for an iron axe they can make themselves in bulk. :-\

Maybe they just wanted to learn your traps location, under any pretext? ;)

Anyway, was the mayor attached to the axe? I wonder if he is sad after parting with it.
He was, that's why it had a name. Must have been one of the first axes I made decades ago before finding marble. Haven't seen any negative thoughts about it, so I don't know if he's sad about it.

While the actual population of Spearriddles has dwindled down to 79 from a peak of about 260, the bushmaster population is growing rapidly. If things continue like this, the untamed wilds my dwarfs call home will be populated by a massive swarm of venomous snakes living in the mangled skeletons of their former masters.

Dwarves can apparently cancel sleep due to being miserable.

Sites don't need to be of your civilization to become economically linked to you.

You could also give melee weapons for the marksdwarves as a backup in case they do something stupid like this (or in case the enemy manages to close with them). It should work nowadays.

The wiki article says they cannot be trained for war.

If those 30 troops are fully equipped with metal gear and have at least some training, you could probably just sally out and drive them off without too much harm to your forces. Goblins seem to have a habit of marching in long columns directly towards the nearest fortress entrance, so you could gather your troops in one place - right behind the front gate, for example - wait for the goblins to get close to you and then launch all your melee troops on them at once. The goblins are likely to be too thinly spread at that point to make effective use of their numbers, so your dwarfs should be able to kill enough of them to make the rest flee before the numbers really begin to count.

I try to give every dwarf a mailshirt if possible because it may protect a lost hauler long enough for a squad to rescue him.

How do you get non-military dwarves to don(dohn?)sp?  mail shirts?

Recruit them into squads whose uniforms include mail shirts, but have those squads be inactive.

I became thirsty while crossing a glacier, so I lit a fire to melt some ice I had in my waterskin.

When the glacier turned to water beneath my feet and swiftly froze again, I realized I might have melted a bit more than was necessary.

3. Vampires can't drink alcohol, yet they still get alcohol withdrawal.

Well, It wouldn't be much of a curse otherwise, now would it? ;D

Just dig deep enough and you will eventually find magma. It might be some 100-150+ z-levels from surface, but there will be some.

I have no idea about the queen, but do the caravans by any chance path through mountains of corpses on their way to the depot? They sometimes seem to get spooked by those and do weird stuff such as leave without trading or attacking your folks without apparent reason. I had something like that happen once, though it might have had something to do with a nasty wereskink infestation as well.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Organizing civilian militia
« on: October 19, 2015, 07:13:35 am »
They will drop them, because those picks and axes are assigned to the civilian uniform and not the military one.

If you pause the game before trying to order your miners and woodcutters anywhere, you can disable the Mining and Woodcutting tasks and then assign each dwarf the exact weapon they're currently holding. But, your woodcutters won't be any better with an axe than any other civilian, and both your miners and woodcutters will be in their civilian clothes. If you want to give them time to put on some armour, you can skip the fiddling around with weapons and have some weaponry lying in reserve for them along with the armour.

Damn, nothing I plan seems to work. Yet... Thanks anyway.
