DF General Discussion / Re: PeridexisErrant's DF Starter Pack
« on: September 01, 2018, 11:03:18 am »
Jaynixxo, lethosor already explained why TWBT doesn't have its own mousequery.plug.dll. "TWBT used to distribute a version of mousequery that was compatible with TWBT, because DFHack's wasn't. This pack used to distribute the wrong one. Then, DFHack's version fixed TWBT compatibility, but that was a while ago (before 0.44). TWBT continued to distribute its own version with added features until around DFHack 0.44.10-r2 (when those features were added to DFHack's version)."

And since it's not a workshop job, you can't even Now! it.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How to fire a chicken?
« on: August 31, 2018, 09:16:32 pm »
I thought you wanted to exile a chicken to the hillocks.

Chickens can also be launched by bridges, although that may be unpredictable and will crush the chicken if you are not careful.

You can drop the chicken down a long pit onto somebody's head, probably killing them. If the chicken does not kill, try killing the chicken first. Corpses and creatures may deal falling damage differently. I know that it's not flying, but it is falling with style. Chicken style.

Now the song "The Sound of !!SCIENCE!!" is stuck in my head. You stuck a song that doesn't even exist in my head. Bravo.

I just read somebody either deliberately or ignorantly conflating falsifiability with having been falsified. In other words, "I can think of dozens of ways Theory X could be disproven" was taken to mean "Theory X has been disproven." (Details deliberately withheld because I've realized that tempting flamethreads is not a good idea.)

I like aquifers because I always embark on biome edges and there's usually a dry path to stone. It just means I have to choose the entrance wisely and dig deep before digging outward, and the benefits are minor but still useful. Unlimited water is nothing to sneeze at. Possible uses include:

Building your entrance so that constantly flowing water washes dwarves so they don't bring in contaminants (more useful in evil embarks or if your cavern tunnel is accessed from the surface).

You can put water wherever you want it, just by digging up. (If you are clever, you don't need to lose a peasant to do this.) Pools for practicing swimming, wells you never need to worry about replenishing and which don't open your fortress to the cavern, water cannons to install next to your Breakfast Pit...

Obsidian generators.

Yes, a river could do most of this, but they're not particularly spread-out or high-volume usually. This means that you have to dig long channels across the embark and ration the water when doing Stupid Water Tricks with goblins. Each tile of aquifer is like a river inflow tile! (I think.)

If you're a noob, or you don't like spending the time to double-slit or search for a good multi-biome embark, or you just don't do much with water, then disabling aquifers is acceptable, but I think too many people see the hassle and not the utility.

I can't interpret that screenshot in terms of where the GCS would stand, etc. If the webs are blocking things, it's possible to hide them. If you have many webs, the best option is probably a mass-hide. Just press d-b-h and select the area with webs. If this hides bridges, then you can select their buildmats with t and unhide them. The bulk screen also has a way to mass-unhide afterward, although I don't recall the key for it.

I think this might fit better in the DF Modding board. People ask for help there and receive it, I think, and it's generally all-around preferable for threads to be categorized well. (This board is geared more for helping people navigate the raid system than the internal code of the game.)

I'd like to be dwarfed as the raid leader if that's not taken yet. Name can be "Dozebom," that's the usual abbreviation. It's a bit different from my usual dwarfing tendencies, but I'll be a book-recovering soldier. That's pretty awesome.

I'd also like to be added to the turnlist.

FF: can't you make glass book bindings? I know that for some reason, you can't make glass scroll rollers, but I could have sworn I saw bindings in the list.

Edit: the wiki explicitly states that glass can make book bindings, and implies that glass can make scroll rollers as well. I know that the latter implication is false, unless I'm just very bad at finding options on a list. But perhaps the two tools are inexplicably different. It's annoying, since scroll rollers are far more useful. They're simpler to use as well.

Eh, like you said, quires work fine.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Lady consort monster slayer?
« on: August 30, 2018, 09:17:29 pm »
As much as I like gay speculation, I like pedantry more. [Gendered noble] consort means that you are a [gendered noble] who has the title because their spouse reigns as [noble of equivalent level]. Queen consort is like passers by - a queen who is a consort.

Yudkowsky even argues that the metric that theories should be judged by with Occam's razor is the complexity of their laws, not the number of things. That's a third interpretation, and I think I prefer it to the things-formulation, as the known universe has expanded dramatically in size over the course of scientific history. Law-Occam would have said "yeah, that could happen", whereas Things-Occam would have predicted the opposite. Predicting the past accurately should be a good indication of being possibly true.

And Law-Occam doesn't just not disallow an expanding known universe, it also predicts that seemingly unrelated phenomena will tend to be produced by the same fundamental laws, and that unification is generally possible. The former is definitely true (electricity and magnetism, heat and motion, etc.) and the latter... well, that's a true prediction, isn't it? All the other predictions were after the fact, but we haven't found a Grand Unified Theory yet.

So yes, Occam's razor can mean vastly different things to different people.

That's not a question. Should it be green? Or does green mean "I am saying this to Toady and not just responding to another post"?

If we lose the vote, then antifa will violently change the law. Because we'll be electing antifa, and they change laws BY SHOOTING PEOPLE.

Or, if we're not electing antifa, then the antifa will simply notice that the left is rising, and take advantage of their newfound legislative power TO SHOOT PEOPLE. Because you shoot people when you're winning, not when you're losing.

Even if antifa are really this great boogeyman, this doesn't make any sense.

Wasn't there a giant thread where people talked about different elements of realistic soil that could be added? One of the great Dwarven Scientists joined in - she had a signature along the lines of "the update isn't like a big muck, it's more like a series of rubes".
