Wtf Republicans also want war with Iran? How did both parties become committed to that, you guys need to sort out your donors
Wait, I thought it was the Republicans who were the warhawks. Democrats want it too?

...ah, so that's how I found HPMoR. Funny how that works.

Anyway, HPMoR's a rather good book so far. I haven't gotten to the Troll Incident, but I've read about 3/4rs of it. Whoever said that the Troll Incident was halfway through the "first book" doesn't understand how this fanfic works. It covers the first year only. It is divided into several books. The Troll Incident is not in the first book.

Your unseemly display of nostalgia is evoking a similar feeling in me.
But, don't despair.  We keep classics relevant even centuries later...  They just have to compete for headspace, and they aren't pop anymore.
Unseemly? Ah, I forgot. This is the Happy thread. Still, nostalgia is bittersweet, is it not?

On an actually happy note, I had a moment of extreme coordination. I've been rather clumsy lately, but as I walked through the door to my house, my mind preoccupied with something or another, I smoothly maneuvered through the door, a pile of cats, and a paper (err, make that a cat and a pile of papers), moving bags from one hand to another as necessary and setting them down as I went. And I didn't trip on anything, suddenly lurch to the side, drop anything, or bash myself into a wall! It seems so ridiculously everyday for me to post here, but I was happy when I noticed what I had done. I think my clumsiness is largely the result of overthinking it all.

I am reading Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality. Best fanfic I've ever read, and I've spent quite some times in the murky swamps of fan fiction. Occasionally you find a gem, but... *shrugs* all too often it's just worthless.

Quote
"Can the Legion stop making plots now?" said Finnigan of Chaos. "I mean, don't we have enough already -"

"No," Harry said flatly. "We can never have enough plots."

"You're giving me a time machine. To treat my sleep disorder. You're giving me a TIME MACHINE to treat my sleep disorder."

And all of the Muggle references, like "Red leader" and "forward deflectors" and "the enemy's gate is down" makes me happy in a sad sort of way. Almost nobody there gets those references. One day, the same will be true of Muggles. All of these somethings, blah, blah, tears in rain.

See? That. That is another reference that will disappear. And yet it makes me smile to see a torrent of references sewn into a chapter.

From the LW wiki:

Quote
Over the last few decades, new experiments have changed science's picture of the way we think — how we succeed or fail to obtain the truth and achieve our goals. The heuristics and biases program, in cognitive psychology, has exposed dozens of major flaws in human reasoning. Social psychology has learned about how groups succeed or fail. Behavioral economists have measured the way humans decide against models of optimal decision-makers, and discovered that we often decide suboptimally.

Less Wrong is a site for people who want to apply these findings to their own thinking.

This seems like a parody of one of those introductory things to games. Like:

Quote
The empire is crumbling. Raiders from the north are terrorizing the villages, and the southern barbarians have conquered a third of our territory. Spies and traitors abound in the capital, whom nobody trusts anymore. And on top of it all, there are space aliens dropping onto our heads.

In the midst of all this chaos, our hero stands, sword in hand.

You know? This just made me laugh - it seemed like a fictional introduction with its dramatic and yet totally serious tone.

Well the article is 4 weeks old, so I don't think the specific story of him naming a specific transgender person who happened to be in the crowd is "old news", it's certainly not been mentioned here.

It is no news that Milo's a piece of shit, I'll agree with that.
In the Interwebs, 4 weeks old is ancient.

But the feminine isn't necessarily culturally bad, mind you.
Oh, I know. A few minutes after the initial rush of SEEING THE TRUTH, I can see that this is one piece of the puzzle, not the entire puzzle itself.
Quote
It's just a much more exacting set of standards. Meeting the ideal of femininity - beauty, purity, chastity and so forth - is rewarded strongly.
Ah, but there's a difference between "femininity is bad/good" and "femininity is discouraged/encouraged". Femininity could be encouraged for women, but also considered to be negative.
Quote
Notice, for instance, that transwomen who easily pass are much more kindly looked upon than those who do not - this is because they plausibly meet that feminine ideal and are difficult to distinguish from regular women. The ones that do not are also not beautiful according to the traditional feminine ideal, and their purity and chastity is called into question because they quite literally deviate from sexual norms.
Yes! This is very similar to what I have been thinking about the Standard Trans (Woman) Narrative, which I dislike intensely. It's society's way of enforcing the gender binary even while people cross it - this person really is a woman, and the gender binary still works, see? She fits all the stereotypes! ::)
Quote
([And] the traditional view is that a crossdresser, for instance, is just a kind of weird sex pervert, which doesn't help matters at all).
In TERF terminology, those people are "autogynephilics." I think I preferred "pervert." It's shorter, and doesn't dress up the hatred in medical terms.

Apparently Milo Yiannopoulos attacked a transwoman on stage at a college and held up a picture of her calling her a sick twisted person basically. And said person was in the audience. Can you imagine how that would feel?
This is old news, but yeah. Milo's a piece of shit. And when college students say "get Yiannopoulos out of Minneapolis", the TERFs complain about "muh freeze peaches". We have the right to disallow abusive and hateful speech in our colleges - especially when the speech considered is that of an outsider being invited and given a platform. This isn't some student ranting about the "NIGGERS", this is different. Worse.
Quote
Also, he's advertising his speaking tour with posters that say "Trannies are Gay"
Pffffff-

I literally spit out my trail mix. Milo is gay. What in the four hells? Is he out of his mind?
Quote
and "Trannies = Mentally Ill". When you combine that with the fact that he's using the pulpit of the stage to do hate speech against individual members of the audience, I can get why people are protesting against his tour, and it's not because "they hate free speech". I mean if a Neo-Nazi is coming to town to give a speech and puts up posters with swastikas on then that say "Gas the Jews" in big letters, and has a habit of turning the audience against specific Jews who turn up to see the speech, I should hope that you get a posse out to beat those guys heads in. There's a limit to acceptable free speech.
This isn't even about free speech though. It's about a free platform. Free speech is free speech, an audience or a platform aren't free.

Life has calmed down!
No homework for today, and as a consequence of my mom's lovebombing I now have cake, chocolate milk and movies~
So the cake is not a lie?

Plus, I got accepted into a college! One of my top three, in fact! And now I'm applying for scholarships!~
And I'm got selected to work on a cool project at school, and I don't even mind all the extra work 'cause it's so cool!

Everything is awesome!
This was a triumph! I'm making a note here: huge success.

I'm sorry, I can't stop GLaDOS-meming, I got Portal 2 and I am very happy.

My experiences on the above -

Readable text: my mind just throws some symbols at my eyes, then interprets the symbols as words. It's some strange script with lots of scribbles and curves and lines, but I just know what the symbols mean.

Original music: Oh, I get that all the time. But that happens when I'm awake, too.

Riddles: I occasionally solve tricky problems in my sleep (I figure out a new way of looking at it, rather) so solving a riddle doesn't seem too implausible. But developing riddles while you're asleep... seems rather strange, yes.

Quote from: Hermeticism
Gender is in everything; everything has its Masculine and Feminine Principles; Gender manifests on all planes.

Sounds like a bunch of essentialist nonsense.

Quote
Girls can wear jeans and cut their hair short, wear shirts and boots, because it's OK to be a boy, but for a boy to look like a girl is degrading, because you think that being a girl is degrading.

IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW

I have wondered for ages why it was more acceptable for girls to transgress gender norms than for boys to do so. After all, society's got it out for women, right? So why would they be favored in this situation?

But looking at it from the perspective of masculine/feminine behavior (or presentation), it fits together nicely.

Quote from: society
Masculine is good, feminine is bad. Women should act feminine. (This distinguishes them from the default of masculinity, and reinforces their inferiority.)

Quote from: society now
Masculine is good, feminine is bad. Let's free women by letting them act in a good way, a masculine way!

From this perspective, it seems ridiculous that some feminists would be opposed to women acting femininely - reclaiming femininity as not bad is the only non-sexist solution, as far as I can see.

Yes, this is now the feminist thread.

Reducing the entirety of economics and culture to supply v. demand.

yep - america liberalism.

"chop chop ppl with no marketable skills, off to the soylent factory with the rest of you! "

??? Are you seriously claiming that the American left has pushed for cannibalism? This is obvious slander. FAKE NEWS!!!
Clearly we were confused with DF elves :P

Though to be fair, the soylent green situation was obviously a parody of socialism.

uuuuugggggghhhh

I fucking hate the USSR for giving collectivism a bad name. Like, of fucking course authoritarian collectivism will be shitty, that's because it's authoritarian.

And the whole "optimize the collective at the expense of the individual" is not the inevitable result of collectivism. Hell, that sounds more like capitalism - social Darwinism, you know? The unsuccessful will die under bridges while the successful relax in condominiums. Capitalism selects against caring for one's fellow men! Collectivism will provide for the needs of everyone, and allow for each to develop and contribute as they see fit! And, and, and -

Jeez. Calm down, Doz, you can rouse the rabble later. :P
