I find it very weird, as it makes it far too challenging in the early game when I'm trying to mine ore to make gear for a military.

Why did Tarn include this in the steam release?

I found a demon in an ore pocket in the very first cave layer.

Place furniture piece by piece is very slow and annoying in the steam version, and the absence of keyboard support and macros makes it even more slow and annoying.

Toady, just let us click and drag to place a line of furniture, let us worry about whether we even have any to place.

For example, say I set the max temp to 100 and the min to 75, would such a world be more dangerous than one set to max 0 min -50?

DF Suggestions / Liquid Management Idea: Large Pipe
« on: January 12, 2023, 12:32:27 pm »
Pump stacks arn't really realistic, Instead my idea is to allow the construction of large pipes that attach to the upper end of a screw pump, and allowing the other end of the pipe, whether it goes vertically or horizontally.

This would allow for ease of power management and make it easier to move liquid around.

I'm pretty sure this has probably been suggested earlier, but having pipes would be pretty nice.

So I'm considering embarking on a major project that will eventually involve a magma moat.

The world size will be 64X64 to help reduce fps issues, but i'm planning to embark in a cold area, maybe a glacier or tundra or something, and on top of a volcano.

I plan for this fortress to last for centuries, as I want to get Cave Dragons.

I also plan to set up an obsidian generator and farm obsidian blocks for the project, as well as glass, if I can manage to make sand, or find sand on the embark site.

I'm already planning to take steps to reduce FPS problems, but once I start the  project itself the fortress will be centuries old by then and thus likely to already be aflicked with FPS loss.

I guess my question is: will a significantly large magma moat cause problems for the FPS?

Edit: I meant when they're stable and not flowing.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Can Dwarves claim possession of flowers?

My latest fort had a cool name: Shadowroses

so I was just wondering, can Dwarves gift flowers to their lovers or something? Just wondering.

DF Suggestions / FPS Death is not a !!FUN!! way for a fortress to end.
« on: January 09, 2023, 11:38:56 am »
Hey, we're all thinking it, I just feel someone has to say it.

Ever since the release of ArchCrystal, Hundred year old forts have become the ideal, but FPS death is a major obstacle in front of it.

Even the guy who made ArchCrystal have to restrict his population to 35 just to keep the fps issues under control.

Now that Putnam is working on the project, I hope that he can somehow bring the FPS issue under control, as it's the one major outstanding issue affecting Dwarf Fortress.

DF Suggestions / Toady, I asked for Crates, where are the crates?
« on: December 14, 2022, 05:35:45 pm »
We need crates to hold stones in, 10 stones to a crate.

I've asked for them twice now, and I thought you would finally add them in the Steam version.

But they weren't there.

Toady, I don't like to have to stuff all my stones into a garbage pile just to make my fortress look nice.

Please add crates, we need them.

DF Wiki Discussion / Is the Wiki out of date?
« on: December 07, 2022, 02:15:24 pm »
Now that the Steam Release is out, Obviously it's a different version than v0.47.05 .

Should the wiki pages now be updated to reflect the new version?

Should the version reticle at the top of each page have a new tag added to it called 'Steam'?

Just wondering.

DF Suggestions / New types of metal
« on: November 05, 2022, 03:55:48 pm »
We all know that adamantine is the best metal so far, usually because of it's ease of access and high qualities.

But what if there was there was an even higher quality of metal that was rare and hard to get without going to extra lengths to get it?

The idea I present to you is rainbow gold, and ghost silver.

In this idea, Unicorn horns are made of rainbow gold. A single horn, when melted down, yields a varying amount of bars.

The quality of the metal depends on how old the unicorn is. 100 year old unicorns should yield metal that is maybe half as good as adamantine, while 200 year old unicorns should yield metal that is just as good, with older unicorns yielding the best quality.

Ghost silver comes from the bones of undead that have been around for a while. when an Undead has been around for at least 10 years, their bones start hardening into ghost silver.

Like with Unicorns, the older the undead, the higher quality the bones are.

What do you guys think?

Edit: obviously, Unicorns would have to be altered to make this an actually rare thing. Ideally, once a unicorn reaches 10 years of age they become legendary in all combat skills, and are untamable from birth, have a preternatural ability to dodge arrows, and become hostile to dwarves when their young are threatened.

Just throwing some ideas out there.

Personally i'm looking forward to the Information features.

The current version of DF just isn't very good at presenting comprehensive information about your fort.

By active I mean you actively have dwarf fortress open, with a fortress mode game playing right now.

I'm tired of having to actively check and write notes on relationships if I want to do familial suites.

Someone, please make a utility that does this, I would really appreciate that.

I'm planning to make a cold, evil world, where my dwarfs will spend most of their time underground in the caves.

I'm planning to bring blocks for walling off the caves, and non-herbivore animals that don't need food to live. I'll also bring plenty of wood for beds.

Any advice for what I should bring and what I should right away upon embark?

My world gen always has 5k embark points.

In the recent Kit-fox email you metioned that you were thinking of delaying work on Item #5 and #6 until after release.

I don't think you should do this. There's an old saying, It's released when it's done. Or in valve terms: 'soon'.

I would rather you finish work on all of your items and giving it a nice sheen of polish, instead of releasing a half finished product before it's done.

I don't mind waiting a few more years.
