A lot of the FPS problems comes down to the excessive individualism of the game.  A lot of things are done individually that really should be done as blocks, grouping together similar dwarves with similar goals.  So in other words, rather than individual dwarves going to bed, eating, working and so on, we have the whole household do these tasks simultaneously, so we do not have to individually calculate the paths for each dwarf.

There was a recent post that said that Pathfinding isn't a significant part of FPS loss.

My latest fort had a cool name: Shadowroses

so I was just wondering, can Dwarves gift flowers to their lovers or something? Just wondering.

DF Suggestions / FPS Death is not a !!FUN!! way for a fortress to end.
« on: January 09, 2023, 11:38:56 am »
Hey, we're all thinking it, I just feel someone has to say it.

Ever since the release of ArchCrystal, Hundred year old forts have become the ideal, but FPS death is a major obstacle in front of it.

Even the guy who made ArchCrystal have to restrict his population to 35 just to keep the fps issues under control.

Now that Putnam is working on the project, I hope that he can somehow bring the FPS issue under control, as it's the one major outstanding issue affecting Dwarf Fortress.

Is pathfinding a major cause of FPS issues?

I was thinking about the lag that even a walled in intelligent undead would create. Imagine you have like, 200 preserved corpses and a necromancer. You pull a lever, the necromancer gets startled, and raises all your fallen dwarves to fight off some horrible catastrophe.

Well, if you strip them of clothing and put them in a 1x1 hole far away from any corpses, it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

What does this have to do with making a long running fortress?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?

Got too used to DF hack convenience commands.

Now I have to figure out how to play at the small scale again.

Full of good info, thank you all. By the way, is there any way to preserve a corpse for a long period of time without it rotting? Obsidianizing or freezing in ice, maybe? One could make a fort where the dead are preserved in amber, as it were, waiting for the time when they are needed...

If you can capture an undead in a cage, it should be fine.

DF Suggestions / Re: Toady, I asked for Crates, where are the crates?
« on: December 16, 2022, 12:50:32 pm »
I mean aside from the break from realism one has to accept in dumping a potentially infinite amount of debris into a single tile.

This is my whole problem with it, it's a break from realism.

yeah, even if you don't go the somewhat cheaty route of quantum stockpiles (which afaik still work in the new version, though I have not personally tested), you can just huck all stone off a cliff into a pit and problem solved.

How do you do that on the steam version? I wouldn't have a problem with it, since it's a bit more realistic.

I think bins and crates should be kept separate.

Bins are for small things, crates are for big things.

So are you suggesting crates couldn't hold small things? Like, they'd be able to store more than bins, but for some reason you could only put boulders (or other stuff with the same volume) in crates?

Well if you can put ten boulders in a crate, but only one boulder in a bin, then obviously you would use the crate to store boulders.

And if you can put ten crafts in a bin, but only one stone, then you would reserve bins for crafts.

I just want a means of storing my stones without having to stuff them in a garbage dump.

Edit: Also, bins are easier to carry.

Toady, can we have crates?

They'd be like bins, but they'd hold stone and wood, 10 stone or wood to a crate.

Please add them, i don't really like having to stuff all the stone into a garbage dump just to make my fortress look prettier.

We need crates to hold stones in, 10 stones to a crate.

I've asked for them twice now, and I thought you would finally add them in the Steam version.

But they weren't there.

Toady, I don't like to have to stuff all my stones into a garbage pile just to make my fortress look nice.

Please add crates, we need them.

Nope just a channel. Most communication about the wiki is done on the wiki.

link me to the place where that discussion is taking place, cause I can't find it from the front page.

Could you please link this discord do that interested parties could join the discussion and/or help with the update?
