Okay, so that sorta made sense.
Makes me wonder what edition he had as I recall the army sneaking up to the castle literally covered in brush so the forest appeared to reach the castle. Not some shield-composition bollocks.

This. I was scratching my head over that part, and a quick look up on my "Complete Shakespeare etc. etc." shows that they were indeed covered in bushes (one of Macbeth's men even reports that the forests are moving).

Alright. Everyone seems to have eaten.

btw, I forgot to mention this, but Famished actually gives -2 to all checks: -1 from hunger and -1 from thirst. In order to get rid of the status you must eat and drink. In this case, I've already assumed you were drinking along with eating your rations and deducted from your inventory accordingly. In the future, only eating or drinking will lower the penalty from -1 to -2, but not get rid of it.

Finally, I am just waiting on what you guys will do with Lilly (keep in mind she is exhausted and therefore cannot move with expending effort), see my earlier post as to what can be done with her.

(( Could you be a little more specific as to what you are unclear about so I know what I have to elaborate on? ))
Eat first, then move on.

((I'm confused as to where we physically are, and what is ahead of and behind us.))

Ah I see. Well, I can't tell you what is ahead :P However, I can tell you that you are currently in a tunnel whose entrance was a secret passageway in the Arched room (with the paintings and pillar). In theory (i.e according to the map) there should be 1 more room ahead of you before the burial chamber.

((No player actions in two days, totally need a new group... :P ))

Action: Assume I'm done with eating, time to move on.
((I'm not really sure where we are. My only action would be a generic...))
Move forward

(( Could you be a little more specific as to what you are unclear about so I know what I have to elaborate on? ))

Also, keep in mind everyone just got status effects (due 4 turns having passed). Only Arvin (Dwarmin) has done anything about it, the rest of you can move forward (without eating) but Famished does have penalties (look at the OP). Also, Lilly is exhausted, which means she cannot move without expending effort (unless you camp and rest for a turn), or someone carries her (which will require both hands free). She is also going to need a crutch or support to walk, otherwise she will have to crawl (and take a -1 to Fitness) or will need to borrow a shoulder (1 arm -not hand -free).

((Well, I have 4 in doctor. Plus 2 from Lily. Looks like plus 1 from me for no chance of fail, since max DS is 7...unless I got something wrong...or if there are random, GM decides whatever penalties...

Also, it occurs to me my character is really unprepared for this dungeon. What is all this stuff? Spores? Bandages? I was given no chance to purchase anything lol...Bahihs, can you take a quick look at my original equipment choices (I cut and pasted from druid/wizard I think, for lack of direction) and make sure my inventory wasn't borked? Just make sure the resource number is right.

Spoiler: Stuff (click to show/hide)
))

---

Also, Action: Spend 1 Xp. Fix that leg! By lopping it off!

(( Well I did give everyone a chance to hang around town, both before and after, the map was obtained. You could have gone to the market then and purchased stuff. The problem was you had little money as it is (which is why you're in this trade to begin with remember?) but the unpreparedness is kind of the point. You're going into the unknown and there is no telling what you might find. If you had everything you needed there wouldn't be any tension.

As for your inventory, yes I rechecked and it's fine, except that your forgetting the rations and spellbook that are in your satchel. Unless you choose not to have those items (though I think you picked the "Wizard" inventory, so you should have them) in which case you should have an additional 3 RP. If that is the case, I'll change it accordingly. ))

Sweat drips from your forehead with the regularity of time, to your lips, on your fingertips. The flame of the torch is brought close to your face; its heat mixes with your breath. You look up. Evelyn is holding Lilly's head and Lilly is biting down on a piece of cloth, she winces and nods at you. You wipe the knife with the sleeve of your robe, Astra kneels next to you holding the torch, holding down Lilly.

Your hand trembles, your mind races, your breath comes short. You struggle to remember proper procedure, thinking back to your days of instruction. Clean the blade. You can't. Administer the spores. You have none. Make a clean cut, and immediately stopper the bleeding. You can try. The blade is coming down now, you swallow your fear. You're a professional dammit! The blade hits skin. Everything is so slow, you can taste every moment; the grains of time are dropping on your tongue, one by one. One by one. The blade hits bone. There is screaming. Muffled, muted. There is blood. You can taste the iron in the air. You hold your breath. You squeeze the blood vessels with your hand. Push down with your whole body, the blade cracks through bone. Screams through the cloth, you know you will hear again in dreams.

Evelyn is comforting her. Astra is holding her down. Tears all around. Are you crying? You can't tell. The sweat is pouring down. The blood is pouring out. You inhale. Iron in the air, iron in the air. Can you forget this? You begin sawing through bone. Through and through, the blade hits flesh again, then the earth. You move quickly. Wash the wound. Rip out the cloth covering the removed limb and tie the bleeding stump.

Lilly is crying into Evelyn lap. Lilly has released her bowels and bladder onto the earth. Evelyn comforts her. She is shaking. From fear? From embarrassment? From pain? You wash your hands. The blood rolls off easy. Will it roll likewise from your mind? You want to vomit. Not here. Not here.

Your torches go out and you light them again (-1 use of oil, -2, if lighting both torches).  Lilly is exhausted. Evelyn, Astra and you are famished.

The bleeding has stopped. The "surgery" was a "success". You all begin to relax. You turn the other way, as Astra and Evelyn help clean up Lilly. Stare into the deep darkness.

What have you gotten yourselves into?

((What am I rolling for, and what are my penalties? I'd rather fix the poison first, as that will kill her alot faster than the wound. Probably.))

No penalties so long as some holds the torch near you (you still have 1 turn left of light, but the other torch has gone out from the throw). You are "fixing" both the poison and the wound through amputation (i.e doctor skill). Basically, you need to remove the envenomed part to prevent spread of the poison. Unfortunately you don't have bandages, so you'll have to use clothing to stop the resultant bleeding (or pray, which takes another check).

The DS will be relatively high however, as you are doing this without the proper tools (just a knife, no anesthesia in the form of shroom spores, etc.) so spend exp accordingly.

With Lilly's confirmation, you(Arvin) borrow Astra's knife begin your grisly work.

Ok I need to know how many exp is being spent on this action. Presumably, all of Lilly's (which nets +2), but how many from Arvin?

((muh, unless Bahis wasted my XP last round somehow, I can burn them to accomplish this if I want to. I don't really want to, not out of meanness, but since Scapheap doesn't seem to have the time to play...probably not his fault, anyway. I'd like to be corrected-maybe he's just been busy lately IRL.

An interesting concept, though. Can players gift their XP/effort to other players/their rolls? I'd think it would work for rolls that have to do with someones life/death. You can't tell me Lily wouldn't 'spend' her own XP/effort to help me do a roll to save her life. She'd be trying to survive her hardest. Even if her adventuring days are pretty much over...

It also means the guy who chose to be a healer doesn't end up spending everything and falling behind his teammates.

Here's for houserules!))

Arvin sighed.

"Lily, I'm sor...sorry...but, you're going to lose your leg. I can save you, but it's...not going to be pleasant...I need you to make a decision now. Your leg, or your life.

Or you can...we can help you go gently, if you want to. Or, perhaps you can hope the Gods are listening. It's up to you."

You still have your exp. And your house rule makes sense, so go for it. However as a compromise, her exp only has half as much potency when used for your check (so the max you can squeeze out is +2 for 4 exp).

Alright couple things.

First, Lilly can't walk (Injured) so someone needs to carry her. To carry someone you need two free hands.

Second, regarding the poison:

A quick look at Lilly's wound tells you(Arvin) that she has been envenomed by the spider's bite. Judging by the size of its fangs and the degree of discoloration...its not good. You estimate 30-60 minutes (or 1 turn) before the poison spreads beyond the point of recovery. You won't be able to make it outside, let alone back to town in that time. Furthermore you have no antidote (rabbit's blood is known to work for most spider bites, but you don't have a drop on you) leaving you with three options: leave her to die and conserve resources (and maybe put her out of her misery), start "treatment" (i.e amputation) immediately, or bring her to the bridge and use the dim light from the bridge. In the latter case, your work becomes considerably more difficult, as you have to work in dim light. In the former, you'll have to use up some fuel, but have a good chance of saving her life (if not her leg).

The choice is not easy, but it is yours

Third, regarding doctor, you will indeed be able to handle both sickness and injury, but Lilly will lose her leg either way. Of course, for the devout, the Gods sometimes grant miracles...

Evelyn sat crosslegged next to Lily and began to pray for healing. ((If this takes a check, wait for a vote. But you know, keeping limbs is nice.))

This will require a check (all magic does), and with it, 4 turns will have passed (2 from before, 1 from the battle, 1 from the prayer), after which every person gets a new status (most likely Famished) and your fuel runs out (again).

Also, mend injury will close the wound (and get rid of Injured status), but will not treat the poison (you need Heal Sickness for that).

Don't die! Stab the underbelly!

On her knees, Astra focuses her entire being on her sword, destroying distinction between metal and flesh. Then she swings the blade upward into the belly of the spider. And twists. (4 damage) Miscellaneous organs and tissues erupt from the gash spilling onto Astra's body and coloring the floor with a yellow goo. Astra rolls to the side as the spider's many legs realize their host is dead and collapse. The spider rolls on its back and the legs curl toward its open wound. There is a tense silence, and some twitching. But at last the Giant Atrax dies.

Exp Gain:
Astra +2
Lilly +2
Arvin +1
Evelyn +1

Lost 1 flask of oil

Everyone seems to be alright except for Lilly. There are two dime-sized holes on her left leg. But more worrisome, is the pale blue coloration around the wound and Lilly's shortness of breath (You are Sick [Poisoned]!)

What will you do?

Sorry 'bout the delay guys/gals, finals and stuff are happening.

Lilly charges forward underneath the Giant Atrax, nocking another arrow and letting it loose (CV = Fit + Hunt = +5 < DV; Fail!). Again the arrow bounces off the arachnid's carapace. The rest of you hang back, waiting for the spider to descend. In a single motion it drops from the ceiling, flips to its feet and charges at Lilly, fangs bared! (Fit + Ath = 4 < 6; 1+2+3 (Fangs) = 6 damage. Resistance = 5 - 6 damage = -1; You are Injured!). The Atrax bites down on Lilly's leg, the pencil-sized fangs bore and break the skin. An unbelievable pain shoots up from knee to brain, sending a redundant message about the severity of the situation. Lilly collapses onto the floor. (Leg injury; -2 to all Fit checks, cannot stand)

Astra runs forward, sword high, and stabs down at the spider's abdomen (Fit + Fighter = 5 = DV; Success! 1+0+2 = 4 damage). The blade sinks deep into the arachnids back and it turns to face its aggressor. Arvin seizes this opportunity and throws his flask of oil (EP used, auto-success), it is guided by forces unseen and smashes against the arachnids head. At the same instant, Evelyn launches her torch and sets the spider's face ablaze. But...nothing happens! The fire continues to burn, the torch rolls to the floor, but the spider is unfazed. Upon closer inspection, you can see that the arachnid has no eyes, and its head is completely encased in carapace like its thorax. The fire is burning on top of the black chitin, and not through it.

Then the Giant Atrax rears up and pushes its fangs through Astra's abdomen (Fit + Fighter = 5 < 6; 1+1+3(Fangs) = 5 damage. Resistance = 5 - 5 = 0). and the cruel points pass through armor and pass through clothing, but not the blade Astra puts between sharp death and sharper life. The blow is redirected. Astra falls to one knee. She is underneath the great beast now, and on her armor there are two fresh holes where fang met iron, and her face is caked with dirt, and her muscles shake from strain, but death cannot match her in a foot-race today. She shall survive.

So by chance today I ended up looking at the Mac app store reviews for Microsoft Office 2011 (which I've been using for years). Apparently it has hundreds of horrible reviews, the main reason for which seems to be... that it was different from the previous versions of MS Office but people have had to upgrade to read .docx files. I even found at least one review of somebody complaining that it wasn't nearly as good as MS Office 1997! The contrast between all of them and the occasional review saying "Guys, it's Microsoft office. It works fine and it reads .docx, I'm not seeing what the problem is here" is hilarious. :P

Theres not much you can do to improve a word processor really. Text editors on the other hand...(Vim anyone?)

"Spiders are vulnerable in their eyes and lower parts. Aim wisely! Avoid the armored hide!"

Action: Vote for fight.

((Shouldn't Lily's check have been 5 instead of 4? If that would make any difference.

Spoiler: Lilly the Survivor

Skill: Hunter 3, Haggler/Athletics 2, Criminal/Fighter 1

Also, would appreciate some help for our first battle.

My fighting is like 0, with a -1 fit mod. I didn't even get any spells, like a doof. So I'm the most useless in combat ever. Can I still do any combat actions or any damage, aside from burning an effort check to do exactly 0 damage with my staff? lol. I'm not sure how I can actually help out here...aside from lighting it on fire.

Like, could I even toss my oil at it, with any chance of success? I mean, I'd in theory fail the throw anyway, right, with my scores? Every time?

Edit: This is not counting if it has some exploitable weak spot I can find. I just want to know if I can do anything number wise.))

Of course you can. Don't forget about experience and effort. Experience can be used as a mod to any skill check and you can add as much exp as you currently have to the roll. Effort is an automatic success on any skill check, so you'd do 1 point of damage with your staff (check the damage formula). The exp is the main way to introduce variability into the system, else, as you stated, you'd fail every time.

Also, yes I am aware her roll should come to 5, however she shot preemptively (i.e before combat even began) giving her a -1 (which I probably should have shown).

You look at each other and collectively decide to fight. What will each of you do? (The Giant Atrax is still on the ceiling and beyond the reach of a melee weapon)
