The archway is slighty depressed inwards and you (Astra) take this to mean a passage, but when you step forward, you bump soundly into a door. You cannot see the features of the door in the darkness. But can feel that it is made of wood.

What do you do?

"Indeed. Let's get going, shall we?"

Action: Stroll across the bridge like the proverbial boss

((Humm, minor question. If we did one of our turns provided with some sort of ambient light (like that bridge), we wouldn't use fuel for our lanterns, would we?))

Indeed. That's why I indicated the level of light. However, in this case the bridge only provides dim light (so you'd take a penalty of -1). But otherwise, you conserve fuel.

You put feet to bridge and walk with well-deserved satisfaction. The bridge extends for sometime, and you walk for what seems to be half an hour. At last the bridge ends and you are on the other side. Your shoes click against hard stone and you realize the floor is made of smoothed tiles. In the dim light of the bridge you can see a short staircase in front of you. The staircase leads to an arched entryway, but it is too dark to tell what is within.

Turn off torch

At first nothing happens. You can hear each other's breathing penetrating the darkness, though cannot see each other. You cannot even see your hand in front of your face, so deep is the dark. Not even the familiar point of light from the surface can be seen (it is probably nighttime outside). But then, with the suddenness of a finger-snap, a you can see a glowing blue path appear out of the black and recede into the distance. The blue illuminates the surroundings (dim light) yet, to your surprise, on either side of the bridge, is nothing. The lake has disappeared, there is no water, just a black pit. Its a good thing you didn't try to swim.

Sorry about the late reply guys.

I'm a little confused as to what you guys are doing. How are you "taking out the light", are you putting out the torches? Or just moving the people with the torches away from Arvin. If so, keep in mind that a torch provides at least dim light regardless of where it is. I assume you're doing the latter.

You (Arvin) hand the torch back to Astra and the party backs as far away as they can get from the lake. The light recedes but you can still see the water. You try wading in again, and tap around, but there is no difference from before.

If you're afraid that you'll need to expend more oil to relight the torches, don't. Fuel runs out every two turns, you can turn off and on the torch without any penalty in between.

Decipher runes.

((R+Scholar = 6 >> DS = 4; Critical!) You gain one experience) Closer examination of the runes reveals that the language is quite similar to one you did your academic thesis on. It takes you a while to record all the characters and then decipher them. At one point your torches run out of fuel and you must relight them (-2 uses from Flasks of Oil) and you do so without any hesitation, absorbed as you are with the runes.

However, your efforts bear fruit, here is what the characters read (an excellent translation, if you do say so yourself):

To find the bridge, seek me
I am loved by thieves
I am feared by men
I am slain by fire
I am needed by sleep

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Are you moral?
« on: May 02, 2015, 11:15:52 am »
Morals are a product of doctrine, and you can only speculate what kind of doctrines these cultures have from the gods they worship.
I once found a civ that had a god of Justice, Loyalty, and Discipline. Along side that they also had gods of murder, torture, nightmares, and death. I am worried about them.

That's remarkably common IRL, actually.
The god of torture was the one that had a temple though :P

Well yeah, which would you rather do behind closed doors? Justice or torture?

((Huh, so if I take a turn, it's just me that gets a check? Everyone else just stands around?

if so, wow, feels like we should do these democratically...))

Arvin explains his findings.

"There should be some sort of bridge across here...though, it may be underwater, or we may have to activate it somehow. Perhaps those engravings have a clue...or maybe we'll just have do do it manually."

Action: Step carefully into the water (checking depth and if I disturb any critters with my staff beforehand)-if I enter the water safely, tap around with my staff, looking perhaps for the tell-tale sound of paved stone, indicating the path of a submerged bridge. Use the map to help me, if possible, but don't use any more turns.

Indeed. As I said, use your checks wisely (or at least democratically). In this case it was useful

The water is cool but not dangerous. You (Arvin) take the lit torch from Astra and wade in, probing with your staff for something solid and man-made. You keep going until the water comes up to your knees but find nothing but solid earth beneath the waters - nothing artificial. You try to go farther but almost slip and fall into the water. It seems the lake is quite deep from that point on, and you'd need to swim. Yet, it troubles you that you cannot see the other side of the lake; perhaps swimming is not the best idea.

Note, no check was used here. In the future I will always tell you if an action requires a check and you can decide what to do from there.

Wait. So this website is a parody right...right!?
It gets trolled hard enough it's difficult to tell what is real and what is false.
I'm pretty sure it's a parody.
No, it's not. The site owner and a good chunk of the userbase are legit. But, again, there are so many trolls messing with them and their genuinely-held views are so out there that it's virtually impossible to distinguish between the two, which IIRC is part of the reason why it doesn't show up much on FSTDT any more. You'll have to go to RaptureReady and similar for 100% guaranteed-authentic crazy.

Arvin (Th Methodical) adjusts his hat, looking about patiently. He seems to distrust the water, keeping several feet away from the edge.

"...can't ever be easy, huh. Well, let's take our time. The tombs not going anywhere. Can I see the map a moment? It's sort of my specialty."

Action: Study the map with my cartography skill to see if I can find some clues about where we are and how to move forward.

This constitutes a "check", and therefore a "turn" will pass. Keep in mind how turns work in this system: every 4 turns everyone gains a random status effect, every 2 turns your torches run out of light. A turn operates for the party as a whole, not per person. Use your checks wisely.

That said:

You (Arvin) take the map from Evelyn and begin to study it. Your considerable expertise with maps allows you read the faded lines with ease (((R+Cartographer = 5 >>DS = 3); Critical! You gain 1 experience point) The map indicates that there are two passages leading out of this cavern. One in the direction of the lake, the other along one of the side walls (the left one). The map makes no mention of a lake, yet connecting this cavern and the next room, the map shows something that looks like a bridge.

Both ways lead to the burial chamber, and upon further inspection you see that the room past the lake could be accessed eventually (albeit in a roundabout way, from the back, through the burial chamber). However, the fastest route is clearly past the lake, as the burial room is just two chambers beyond the lake. Furthermore, the map clearly indicates arched roofs for the room past the lake, and if you know anything about architecture and map-making, you know arched roofs are sturdy, built to last, built to support. Built for a vault.

Above you (through the well) you can see only darkness. It seems the sun has set on the surface while you've pored over the map.

What will you do?

Light my torch and look around.

Note that you have four people, so that two torches will be needed to provide light for everyone. Otherwise, 2 people get full light and the rest dim light. This is important. For now, I'll assume Astra is standing next to Evelyn.

The light from the torch illuminates a vast cavern whose ceiling cannot be discerned. You are standing on the shore of an enormous underground lake that extends into the darkness. There is no obvious way of getting across. Along the back wall are engravings written in foreign characters. Evelyn recognizes the language (High scholarship) and a cursory glance reveals the words: Fire, love, sleep and...to steal? - well something like that. You'll need to study the characters more carefully for a sensible translation

What do you do?

((My guess- Resource Points. Who has the most left?))
((Me with two.

On this note, bahihs are you planning on consolidating character sheets anywhere and updating them, or are we in charge of our own sheets?

If we're doing our own sheets I can do everyone's sheets, to compensate for the fact that my character will be of no use in combat.))

Hire a guide (1 or 2 resources, hopefully 1...)

I am going to put each character under their party in the first page. (It should up now) And I will also be updating them once you get to the tomb. You should however keep track of your own sheet so you can challenge any discrepancy. But there is no need to print the entire sheet every time a change is made, a simple bolded -1 or +1 etc will suffice.

Also, I think I'll color-code any text which is DM-speak to make things easy for everyone. Important info will always be purple.

You enter the one of the many Tavern's in the town hoping to find a guide to the Valley. After a few hours of offered alcohol and semi-drunk chatter, you manage to find a priest that agrees to lead everyone to the Valley. In exchange, he wants a sizable donation to his temple. (-1 RP). And with that, you immediately set off for the Valley. The priest follows a seemingly random path from the town, closing his eyes muttering prayers every few steps. When night comes you decide to make camp. In the morning, you breakfast on a deer Lilly managed to kill (Hunter skill; no rations were used during travel) and arrive at the Valley at around sunset.

The entrance of the Valley is known to take on many appearances. In your case, it is a well, with a rope ladder leading into the depths. The priest takes his leave. The four of you peer into the well, but the black is impenetrable. One by one, you climb down the rope ladder. It is a long time before you hit solid earth. Above you, the surface is no more than a point of light - no different than a star in the night. Around you, the darkness is total and terrifying. Below you, the ground is muddy and wet. All is silent.

What do you do?

Astra, having followed Evelyn, nods. "Seems like one we can handle."
"Agreed, it's straightforward enough. It might be worth looking around for any descendants of this Lord Fa Ho-Luo; might be able to trick them into giving us permission..."

You already have permission (in the form of written consent on the back of the map) from a descendant of Lord Fa's mother (Lady See Chao-Mo). So you're fine there. The only thing you really need is a guide to the Valley of the Dead, as its reality-bending nature makes it the same distance (about a day's journey) from all places but impossible to find without a person with high magical sensitivity (Master Arcanist)
((Woops, misread that section I guess. How would we go about finding a guide?))
((My guess- Resource Points. Who has the most left?))

Yup. I've updated the town section with a new option (which I forgot to put) "hire help". This can be done from the tavern.
