Spoiler (click to show/hide)

You are all sat in your assorted houses/cars/dustbins/cloning vats at your laptops/phones/Commodore 64s/datajacks.
You are on a forum.
You see a thread labelled 'Ideas for new RTD?'.
It looks pretty interesting, maybe you could get your ideas through. It'll be a hybrid game or whatever, probably.

What do?

NEW MOON HIGH: It Begins

It is a clear, warm September morning; a rarity if there ever was one. A new year at New Moon High School has begun. The students are arriving, and a good few are simply hanging around the entrance hall and waiting to be led to the induction.

The school, a large, one could say sprawling, building, happens to be quite a ways out from the town, a common complaint for the local students, but that's how it's always been. As it is, unbeknownst to them, there's a good reason for it.

I'm sure we all know what that is.

Welcome, new students, to New Moon High School for the Paranormal.

Your bags, such as they may be, have been taken to your dorms. Feel free to talk amongst yourselves until a member of staff arrives to take you to the main hall, where the Headmistress will introduce you to the school.

And please, don't discuss that particular subject around the mundanes. The Headmistress will not be happy.

Oh, word, I'm making a terrible mistake.

Well.

This is an interest check for a 'generic shounen RPG'. So generic, in fact, I haven't bothered to come up with a story, only specific details.

The basic idea is that people will be able to do... pretty much whatever. Using the universe's native Universal Power Source/Plot Filler, you can do all sorts. Naruto had flying wizard ninjas because of chakra, we can have flying ninja wizards because of *insert completely inaccurate power source name here*.

No more details, because that's the other reason this thread is here: building the universe.

Who's interested?

Life Advice / Overtly dark thoughts
« on: April 27, 2015, 04:21:19 pm »
Right, not to beat about the bush, lately I've been thinking of, writing about, heck, even dreaming about, things that are of a less-than-pleasant nature. Voluntarily. Of course, I'm in my early teens: it's probably just a phase, like the myriad whiny 'emo' kids on Facebook. The only reason I'm asking about this is because I wrote a short story and felt very pleased with it, then the next day took one look at it and deleted it from my laptop. It would make good creepypasta material, except it wasn't really written thus. This shook me up quite a bit, and I've tried to rationalise it.
To be concise, is this normal? In all other aspects of life I'm perfectly happy, and life is great. I just seem to have suddenly unlocked a great capacity for horrible things.

DF Modding / Equipment and Attacks
« on: February 01, 2015, 03:43:53 pm »
Is there a way (using raws) to make a piece of armour etc. that can be used as an attack when worn and not when held in the hand? So you can have a 'closed hand' weapon, a la Assasin's Creed hidden blade or a katar?

On the subject of katars, do gauntlets etc. make a difference to the impact of punches?

DF Suggestions / Fleshed-out civ sites
« on: January 02, 2015, 06:04:50 am »
Just a few ideas on fleshing out dwellings and the like.
Bandits
Seeing as for some reason random travellers have tents while bandits have nothing but a pile of goods and a few campfires, I think bandit camps should be given a little more depth during generation.
A few examples:
-Adding tents for bandits to sleep in
-Adding weapons racks and storage tents rather than the unorganised pile of chests and bags in the current camps
Human sites (towns, hamlets)
At the moment peasants live in dirty little huts: that's only to be expected. However, perhaps giving blacksmiths, doctors. tanners and the like their own places of work within a town (for instance, the surgeon's home having a few 'surgeony' things like a bucket, a few beds, knives and threads/needles). Other things include:
-If a peasant or otherwise has, say, killed an animal (a wolf or wild bear or something) perhaps putting a trophy in their house (if ethics allow) such as a 'black bear bone figurine of Tiqua Knifewashed'
-As mentioned above, giving humans with professions profession-specific items (or perhaps their own 'shop', like a metalworker having a forge (or even sharing one with another person of the same kind of profession)
-This suggestion is for most sites, not only humans: perhaps adding aspects to peasant life that actually show (for instance, a farmer being out in the fields planting/harvesting, a metalworker working at a forge, a normal peasant walking to a shop and getting some food/clothing, and the like)
Dwarven sites, mainly hillocks
Seeing as fortresses already have a fair amount of organisation and the like (although the trade depot is the only place I ever see dwarves: perhaps spreading them out a bit more would help, unless I'm looking in the wrong place) hillocks are the main place I'd consider changing, although they're also pretty developed, if not complex. Examples of work that could be done are:
-Again, dwarves having their own equipment etc. based on profession (perhaps in another, larger, 'Work Mound' or the like)
-Ways of distinguishing between the type of mound (perhaps just something as simple as signs)
-As mentioned before, the visible aspects of peasant life
Elven Sites
Elves all live in trees. The only suggestion I can make is perhaps making it a bit more evident which trees are lived in, and a 'mead hall equivalent' in which to find elf warriors and leaders, as I can't seem to find any anywhere (at least not on purpose).

Also, bar brawls are something I'd love to see if inns and taverns are implemented.

DF Suggestions / Memories
« on: December 25, 2014, 04:55:43 pm »
I realise this is probably asking a bit much of Dwarf Fortress' generation algorithms, but peasants and such in Adventurer (or perhaps Fortress Mode somehow) being able to remember events they were involved in (for example, a war) and give opinions on same would be (to use slang) pretty wizard. I'm fairly certain they already remember the events, but a more specialised branch of dialogue/form of record taken would add a lot of apparent depth to the world. Nothing much, just perhaps:
Adventurer: Tell me about your history (or something along those lines)
Peasant: In 14 I fought in the War of Biting. I killed 3 during my time on the battlefield. It was terrifying.
Adventurer then can elaborate, i.e: What was the War of Biting?
Peasant: It was a conflict between (army name) and (army name). It was fought due to a dispute over the treatment of plants/I don't know why it happened.
Adventurer: Where was the War of Biting fought?
Peasant: Right around these parts/It was fought on The Plains of Washing/I don't know where it was fought.

Or something like that. If this is the wrong place for this I apologise.

DF Modding / Golems
« on: December 25, 2014, 04:44:30 pm »
Being an inexperienced modder, is there any way to make a creature that can be crafted (as in, made in a workshop or the like)? Something I'm fairly certain could be done is a golem (as in, animated creature, not undead) and I'm curious as to how one could achieve this. Also of interest, could one (without mucking about with loads and loads of files) make it so that in worldgen one could have historical figures create golems/whatever? For example, 'In the mid spring of 13 Ted Bowlsnatched gave sentience to Knifewash the golem.' ?

If it'd be incredibly complex, I'm not really able to do that kind of thing so kindly mention thus. Still be interested in any answers, though :)

DF Gameplay Questions / Picking plants?
« on: December 25, 2014, 02:15:31 pm »
In Adventurer mode, is it yet possible to pick plants: for instance, obtaining turnip plants? I can only ever get the leaves.

DF Gameplay Questions / My name is 'Recruit'
« on: December 24, 2014, 10:13:09 am »
Just noticed that when playing as an outsider on Adventurer my name isn't visible unless I greet someone: (l)ooking at myself only says 'recruit'.
Is this just an eccentricity of being an outsider? Are there any other things I should know?
