greatorder, are you from London? Just curious.
Nope.

Now, in UK news, David Cameron says that the Conservatives will have the first black or asian MP.

Sounds like a desperate attempt to win over minorities to me.
Get ready for vaudeville blackface Cameron.

The system will be based on various criteria, ranging from financial credibility and criminal record to social media behavior.
Sounds like they are planning to make social media compulsory for everyone – and why the hell not? Mao would have been overjoyed if he'd had such powerful tools of surveillance and thought control.

On the one hand, I want to see tabloids like the Sun burn in a fiery pit, on the other, hate speech shouldn't really be illegal IMO. Yes, frowned upon (heavily), but not downright illegal, because of the whole freedom of speech. Especially with something that can be as nebulous as hate speech.
While people are getting mad about something they don't understand, could someone please explain to me how it is the hate speech is different from incitement?
Hate speech is basically insulting someone, except relating to something specific about them, usually gender, skin colour etc., whilst incitement is attempting to provoke unlawful behaviour.

One of the differences, incitement is impossible with no laws (since it needs to promote breaking of laws), hate speech is still possible.
In my opinion, hate speech and incitement are pretty much the same thing. The latter just uses less ambiguous terms.

I don't know if this has been posted here before, but I just found a free cookbook based around eating for $4 a day. Seems really great for people on a tight budget, but everyone needs cheap recipes sometimes. It's definitely worth a read, she's got some cool ideas and I'm surprised some of them are as cheap as they are.
Hey that's pretty good stuff. *downloads*

$120/month/person is a fairly reasonable minimum for a balanced and healthy diet. I know from personal experience that it's possible to stay alive and well for about $40/month, but that may occasionally require skimping on the healthier stuff. You could in theory go even lower with a bit of dumpster diving, but sadly, supermarkets tend to keep their precious garbage behind lock and key nowadays. :(

In European news - the SNP are issuing calls in the European Parliament for the EU border control agency FRONTEX to prioritise search and rescue operations for North African (often Libyan) migrants, and for proper funding to be given to search and rescue operations in general.
SNP gets full points for that.
EU leaders are spewing promises in every direction, but they are very likely to forget them once again, if there's no consistent political pressure from the lower echelons.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the Empire of Great Britain, a great philanthropist is showing almost overwhelming sympathy for the victims of this tragedy. *gnashing of teeth*

I'm not telling you to do anything, and I already regret posting anything that could be interpreted as guilt-mongering. Sorry. :-[
It's okay mate, i know i was a needlessly confrontative about it in retrospect. This temper of mine keeps making me do dumb things, and for what it's worth, i didn't vote right-wing. :I
I know you didn't, man. We cool. I just tend to forget that I'm writing on the internet, where every innocuous line of text can suddenly grow fangs. :P

I'm responding because I think the advice you're giving to other people about staying safe online is unhelpful - if someone does discover your online name then they can easily save a copy of what you've posted.

I don't think it's fair to try and seize the last word like you did in #10091 (especially if you're going to continue to make posts on the subject), and I also think you're trying to intimidate me with this display of (largely unrelated) outrage.  I don't know if this is intentional, but it's creating a tense atmosphere in this thread and it's not surprising that it spills over sometimes.
You are not obligated to take heed of anyone's advice, but it's usually considered good manners to oblige a simple request without demanding an explanation. If someone politely asks you to move over in a bus, do you start interrogating them about the underlying rationale of their plea?

Well, fine. Not everyone, because we are very good and compassionate, and there's nothing we could do anyway. 0:)

The thing is, if Shook's to blame for it then so am I, because the UN should be doing something about it. And South Africa's in the UN. And I can definitely control what the UN does! Because you know, I'm South African and SA is in the UN. The same goes for the EU.

I understand it's emotionally charged, but there is actually not much most people can do. If I went around and started telling people about this, I can tell you that almost all of them would look at me and ask me why that's their problem. I've tried similar things before, and got that reaction. Or they'd agree with the people letting them die.
One thing that every EU-citizen can do is to avoid voting right-wing populist parties. You couldn't do that because: 1) You're not European. 2) You're not old enough to vote. :P

Well, fine. Not everyone, because we are very good and compassionate, and there's nothing we could do anyway. 0:)
Okay then, what do you want me to do? I'm quite curious, because giving prayers doesn't count.

...that may be actually true about the members of this forum, but that's what the anti-immigration people are saying as well.

There are a significant amount of people who would rather let immigrants drown before they get to Europe than rescue them and risk them staying in whatever European country picks them up. They knew the risks when they got on the boat, they say. And of course it doesn't count as killing because you can't kill through inaction.
Watching someone drown when you could help them is pretty close to killing, though. Considering how little the EU countries are doing to stop further tragedies, I'd say that every EU-citizen is at least indirectly involved in that crime.

I was supposed to write an urgent assignment tonight, but instead of doing it, I just had a few beers and spent the rest of the evening browsing Bay12. Motivational deficiency disorder seems to be endemic around here.

The server side code will still be in java, but the client should soon be entirely in Javascript.
That's good news. I'm also a bit leery of JavaWS and Java in general, but I'd be willing to try the Javascript version.

If you're using that story as an argument against AI, it's also an argument against cars, the internet or any other machine.
It would be silly to use fiction as an argument against anything. I'm simply pointing out that one person's utopia may be another's dystopia, and neither of them is objectively right.

FAKEDIT: A black-box society that humans cannot comprehend? That's starting to sound downright scary...  :o

Society basically already is that for anyone who doesn't spend loads of tie studying it, and most people deal just fine.
We can easily understand everything we know about society, but we simply cannot know everything. The AI would have to be omniscient as well as super-intelligent to devise the optimal society.

EDIT: fucked up quotes fixed.
