Forum Games and Roleplaying / Getting payed to make quality forum games.
« on: February 25, 2015, 01:04:36 am »
It seems this has been rendered a taboo craft to profit from, however as a fellow forum game designer, I know how far we can take the game we make, and I think I've had enough.

I want to make a website where people can play and host forum games, and the hosts are welcome receive support for their efforts or incorporate financial elements, though that is entirely optional.

Not only that, there really isn't anywhere on the web that is ALL ABOUT FORUM games, whether attached to a comic or game, forum games are seen as an after thought.

PM if you'd be interested in this venture, if you have experience making websites, or would otherwise like to contribute.

This is a thread about collaboration, not debate.
If you want to criticize how this project should progress, go right ahead, if you want to invalidate or debate the legitimacy of such a venture, feel free to do so -->here. Please do not respond to such comments either, thanks.

Project Notes -->here.

Confession: I'm only a minor Dwarf Fortress player, I'm here for these games. And on that note I feel I might belong more on a forum that isn't directly tied to a game like this one is, perhaps one meant specifically for the love joy and appreciation of forum games. Any such place exist? What other, perhaps more dedicated forum game hot spots have you located on the web?

Edit: please add hyperlinks(or atleast urls) to your suggestions if you would, thanks!

Edit2: I will make a list of your top suggestions, go ahead and recommend ones others have so I know you support it too. You don't need a link in that case.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Parasite the Maxim forum game?
« on: February 22, 2015, 03:29:03 pm »
As a fan of John Carpenter's the thing, and sci fi monsters in general, I've been totally enchanted by the quirky PtM series. I almost was a little shocked to find no game currently running on the series, so I thought I better change that. So what are your own ideas? Would you like to be a symbiote with another player? Would you rather be the human or the parasite? Would you rather be a total parasite? Would you just want to be a human? Or perhaps a totally unique arrangement? Share you're ideas and perhaps we can get a mafia or RPG or something more suitable going. As of this post I've only seen up to episode 6 of the like 20 available so I may not be the most qualified to host, but if no one else is interested in hosting 'parasite pun indendo' I will definately like to put something on.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / What are your thots on supporting game hosts?
« on: February 19, 2015, 01:07:32 am »
This thread is for debating the validity of forum game hosts being compensated(primarily with money, though other forms are up for discussion).

If you'd like to collaborate on a project I've started to help forum hosts get payed, I welcome you to check it out, -->here.

Original Post:

ello, I was watching this video, and it I wanted to know what you as members thot(its intentional, bugger off) about supporting game hosts?

Do you think you'd ever feel compelled to support a game host, specifically with money? Would you offer if they didn't have a donate page, or would you feel better about it if they did have one? Does the whole idea disgust you, or do you think their might be something to it. Have you already given or received payment.

Thanks!

To enhance the focus on discovery, we will not be using stargate film or television canon at all. This is a story about a military group that obtains stargate tech, and assembles a team to go in. That's it. Subsequent missions will be a response to previous ones. If you have a world or story you'd like to bring to life, pm me and run it by me, I'll see if I can arrange gameplay for it :)

Pieces

NameHPDescription
Human20Your starting piece.
Minotaur40If there is no Minotaur, you can go to the shrine to transform into one. Keep your current HP. Can't exit the arena. Add 2 damage to any successful attack you make.
Ghost0If you are killed you become a ghost. Move to a Landing to respawn. Can't be hurt, cannot harm others, does not trigger traps. Incorporeal, players may move onto its space and it may move onto theirs.
Grim_Reaper0The game host. Can kill ghosts that haven't respawned for 12 hours, making them lose all souls. The judge. Can reward or punish, especially related to committing or catching non legal game updates. Does not trigger traps. Incorporeal, players may move onto its space and it may move onto theirs.

To Begin
Choose to start at any unoccupied Landing.
Add yourself in at your beginning location:

D. Landing 1
Human Deadpool \0/ 20 HP

(location)
(piece) (name) \(souls collected)/ (remaining) HP

Ways to Win
>Obtain 3 souls.
>Rest for 48 hours unharmed.

How to Play
Kill other labyrinth dwellers to obtain a soul.
Each new hour, you may perform a new action, this one action might be:
>Enter/Exit arena.
>Initiating/completing an attack.
>Blocking/parrying an incoming attack.
>Moving to an adjacent unoccupied hex.
>Sleep/Wake.
>Initiating/completing a Trap.

Glossary
Numerical hour: You can perform 1 action per numbered hour, this means it's not actually necessary to wait 60 minutes between turns, so long as the number of hour has changed since your last action.
Adjacent hex: On the labyrinth map above, all traversable spaces are represented as a hex. An adjacent hex is one that is touching the hex you are standing on.
Unccupied hex: No player, except maybe the Grim Reaper or a ghost, is on the hex.
Gold: Obtained as a gift or from finding them(as errors). You start every match with 10. If you die, they phase with you and you keep them.

Entering/Exiting the game
To begin, choose a unoccupied landing hex, a hex with no one on it(except perhaps the Grim Reaper).
"I start at D."
You are done for this turn, do not perform any other action this numerical hour.
If you wish to leave the arena and protect your souls, return to a landing to exit.
"I exit at D."

Moving to an adjacent, unoccupied hex
If you have not performed an action this numerical hour, you may move to a nearby uninhabited hex(you CAN move on to ghosts or the Grim Reaper).
"I move to I"

Initiating an attack on an adjacent target
If you have not performed an action this numerical hour and did not trigger an incoming trap, you may attack a player standing on a nearby hex.
"I attack Bob"
Note the time of your post. If the seconds was a 0 you missed.

Completing an attack
The next hour, if your attack has not been successfully blocked or parried, or you have not been attacked after initiating your attack, and they are still adjacent your hit lands. If you allow extra numerical hours to pass, multiply the number of those extra hours to the damage total. (the first extra hour is x1 and gives no bonus)
"I hit Bob for 7."
The number in the seconds place of your initial attack post, is how much you do. Be sure to update their HP. If you kill your target, set them as a ghost, and add 1 soul to your total.

Blocking an attack
If you haven't done anything this numerical hour you may block an incoming attack. You may only choose 1 source to block, this includes traps. Even if you miss, you can keep try again each hour if the hit hasn't landed yet.
"I block Joe's attack."
Note the time of your post. If the seconds was a 0, 1, or 2 you missed.
When someone attempts to block your attack, it is up to you as the attacker to notice the miss.

Parrying an attack
If you haven't done anything this numerical hour you may parry an incoming attack IF the attacker initiated it in a previous numerical hour(meaning they could complete the attack but have not). Even if you miss, you can keep try again each hour if the hit hasn't landed yet.
"I parry Joe's attack."
Note the time of your post. If the seconds was a 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 you missed.
You cannot parry in the first 59 seconds of a new hour, if you did you missed.
"Joe takes 7 damage."
You do as much damage to them as they would have done to you had they just landed the attack. Be sure to update their health as you would from landing an attack.

Sleep/Wake
If you haven't done anything this numerical hour you may fall asleep.
"I sleep."
Any numerical hour thereafter you may wake up. Add the number of hours to your HP. If in the garden, restore double the amount. You cannot do anything else the turn you wake up.
"I wake and regain 4 HP."
You cannot go above your max HP, displayed in the 'Pieces' section above. If you were killed, while sleeping or otherwise, you are now a ghost, and cannot heal.

Traps!
If a player moves and the seconds of their post is a 9, you may announce that they activated a trap!
"Bob activated a trap!"
If that player does not move away from or block the trap before 10 minutes after the next numerical hour, you may damage them equal to the seconds of your trap announcement post. As with landing an attack, if you allow extra numerical hours to pass, multiply the number of those extra hours to the damage total.
"My trap hits Bob for 6!"
If you kill your target, set them as a ghost, and add 1 soul to your total.

Discussion
Should editing be forbidden? If not, should anything be done to eliminate the possibility of cheating? ;P

Feedback
any suggestions to core game balance, game flow, and anything I deem as a fundamental enhancement, will be incorporated right away if I deem them as such(or in a later session). All players are encouraged to share such feedback.

« on: January 31, 2015, 03:00:58 am »
Looking for playtesters or anyone experienced with GameMaker(Studio) thanks.

The goal of the project is to have a game where players play in a living breathing kingdom, and one player can even become the king and build buildings and offer rewards for completing tasks.

Thanks for your interest.
Please post or PM the best way to contact you, and send you files.(emails sometimes delete game maker files)

Currently Need:
People to test multiplayer. Not with my game but other gamemaker games. I will host. This will help me to see if I have the basic needs to host this kind of project. We can even use a game of your choice if you have one in mind thats been made in game maker.

\ Cards /

Red: Attack something.
Yellow: Look for something.
Green: Outsmart someone or do something carefully.
Blue: Protect yourself from attack or hazard.

____________________
\ Declaring Intent /

Scenario/Draw: You are told the setting then given 5 cards, or cards to replace those you played.

A. Choose Special: If you have any, you may opt to use 1 before playing cards.
B. Play Cards: You may not use any or play up to 5. You can explain why they are relevant to your turn.
C. Describe Intention: Describe what you want to accomplish; use the setting, your profession, or held items to your advantage. You may wish to clarify why they would help.

1) Picking up an item you found as result of your last turn, doesn't end your turn. That's a free action.
2) You cannot discard cards other than by playing them or using a special. If you play a card that is not relevant to your action/intention, it will be returned back to you in its original position in your hand.
3) When playing cards, the right-most(newest) are used first, when you play a card you have more than 1 of.
4) Zombies get stronger and more numerous the more turns that pass.
5) The game gets easier the more cards you discard.
6) Getting hurt cause you to lose cards directly from your deck, not from hand.
7) Discard 50 Cards: Succumb to the disease! That's right! You've been bitten! But your blood type is very resistant to it. You might even last a few days. What are you going to do about it?

____________
\ Specials /

As you play cards and your discard pile grows you will discover new card abilities, called specials. Every 10 cards you can choose either an ability to make your cards more powerful, or run out more slowly.

10
BOUND: Play your oldest(left-most) card. It doesn't go into the discard pile.
BREAK: Play your oldest(left-most) card as any color you want.

20
BLINK: Select 2 adjacent cards that are of different color, and play them. They don't go into the discard pile and swap positions.
BLEND: Select 2 adjacent cards that are of different color. Choose a color that is different than either card, and play them. Both become the chosen color.

30
BLOCK: Play this ability only if you have 3 or more of the same color cards in a row. Choose a card color other than those cards. You cannot play cards this turn. You cannot be hurt this turn. If you were attacked your newest card from the row goes into the discard, and you draw the chosen color.
BLOOM: Choose a card color that you have atleast 1 of before playing cards this turn Keep atleast 1 of them, you will only draw that color.

40
BONUS: If you get a kill this turn you will get a prize: If there was a player you get half their discard put into your deck, if not, if there was a human you get 3 cards put from your discard pile into your deck, if not, if you killed a zombie you get 1 card put from your discard pile into your deck. Rewards do not stack.

Multiplayer: After turn 3 it is possible to find a radio.
