DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dwarfs not hauling after reclaim

I am amazed that even though I specifically wrote I know how to unforbid items there still was a post about that, or was Orange Wizard trolling?

Diamond I allowed gather refuse outside just now, but they still don't touch the items I marked for dumped. Thanks for the tipp anyway.

here is the savefile 4maskwolf, maybe you can make sense of the situation. I would really appreciate it.

http://www.filedropper.com/haulingproblems (I renamed the folder so you would find it easier, just unzip in your savegame folder)

Maybe the dorfs and caravans don't......but Armok does!

Also I seem to have abandoned the fortress while there were merchants present.

They still roam around (for around a year now, I did get a normal caravan in addition at the right time which left again). Could it be that all the scattered stuff is their "merchandise" which is why my dwarves ignore it? The Trade Depot is empty though and I can't "claim" anything there.

P.S.: Dumping doesn't work either.

DF Gameplay Questions / Dwarfs not hauling after reclaim
« on: May 03, 2015, 07:07:33 pm »
Hi,

to get it out of the way: YES I did remove the forbidden brackets. And I know how (d-b-c).

I started a Fortress and after a while noticed I had chosen the wrong dwarven civilization. So I abandoned it and reclaimed the site with my chosen one. (Why I chose to do this is not relevant)
So I started reclaiming workshops beds ect. Then objects outside the fort. for a while everything was ok then I noticed that I got Idlers. I thought wtf? Looked at dwarf therapist and yes I have idlers doing nothing. Not partying or anything. So I thought lets play on maybe its sorts itself out. But it didn't. I at one point allowed every scattered item on the map of which there are still a lot, and nothing. My dwarfs won't touch them.

Has it to do with it being another civ that reclaimed the spot? I am at the end of my wits. Why isn't this working????

Please help its annoying.

So nothing that can get over a 2z smooth wall if it's not flying? Then I guess that would probably the way to keep enemies from approaching from behind.
How are the climbing down mechanics over smooth wall? I mean in case if you smooth a mountain cliff from the inside do enemies just fall down or will it stop them from attempting it?

My froges are just ontop the magma in the volcano, not the magma sea if that makes a difference. I saw Magma crabs but no demons or anything. But since I wanted to be sure I just sealed the Volcano from the top, and now I am putting in the floors of the forge. Guess I will move the forges too, just to be sure. Or maybe I just channel magma in a basin in one of the lower levels. Then my dwarfs don't have to run up 20 z lvls all the time.

Thanks for all the posts I learned a lot. Next time I make a new fort I will try the cliff entrance again, I will post if I learn anything about the enemy path finding, and if just an overhang works and such.

Yes! I almost forgot that I still have three aces in my sleeve^^
Edolkalan, The Weathered Trails, a rhyolite statue of Ingish Lashhush
Arinnothis, The Trustworthy grief, a birchen floodgate and
Nazomabir, The Dreamy Romances, a andesite mechanisms.

Hopefully they will help me get the royal quarters up to par...

can I somehow use my artifact drum amulet and wool skirt to improve quarters too?

My dream embark has just been ruined.... by the ascension of the King :'(  Of the 3 Dwarven Civs available, I had to pick the one that is nigh extinct.  I rushed to complete a spacious room that would double as his mausoleum, but my Craftdwarfship simply isn't high enough to produce the needed value, no matter how high the quantity of stuff I add.  Within the space of a month, he has mandated 2 Large Gems, 2 orders of 3/3 Anvils, and forbidden the export of Anvils.  He is modestly happy now, but I can see the decline in progress.  Couple with the fact that my first migration wave produced a grand total of 3 Dorfs, I decided to spare myself the misery.  Really really wish I had kept a seed or other backup save of this world.  Blah :(

Try making golden furniture encrusted with gems? I am going to try that for my queen I got stuck with...

I have humans that trade with me. (When I am not under siege that is^^)

Also did I mention that I think I only have native Copper, Gold, and Galena (lead/silver) on my map? Didn't find any iron whatsoever.

10th Slate 1053 Mid-Spring
3 years after founding Lebeslibash Gatalgostanggeshud Katdir "Apexaxes the Awe-inspiring Fortress of Glimmer" (population 93 / wealth 1,439,402 / no Barons, Counts ect)
the Goblin Queen Mafol Workerbodice (of the Dwarven civilization "The Sunken Walls") died after being slain by the human Asno Liefrothed (part of the goblin civilization "The Blowing Hatred")
when Granitecave the Mountainhome and only other settlement of "The Sunken Walls" was conquered by "The Blowing Hatred".

Making Asno Liefrothed the Overlord of "The Demon of Shadow" the goblin bandit gang and new goverment in Granitcave.

Iton Dwellgaze a female Legendary+1 grower Dwarf and citizen of Apexaxes became the new Queen.

Also Apexaxes is currently under siege also by "The Blowing Hatred" (36 Goblins and 5 Trolls)

THIS is what is going on in my fort...

I am playing DF for a month now, and have no idea what to do / expect to happen now. The Queen wants royal accommidations (duh!) and the best I have are decent ones from my mayor.
When I view my civ I only have a general and a baroness (of Granitecave?) besides my queen. Both not in my Fortress. No Liason or anything else. What about trading? Will there be dwarven caravans coming? Are Dwarven civs known to conquer any holdings back?

Since this is the final holding of my civ I guess I should use my volcano and start working on a final magma solution to make it safe.

The easiest in terms of maintenance is the trap filled corridor with a detour for caravans. Basically, you dig into the earth and have everything underground. A direct path (1 tile wide is enough) to your fortress is lined with traps  to hold off any invaders. Invaders always take the shortest path. A winding path (at least 3 tiles wide, better more in case incoming and outgoing caravans meet each other) gives access to caravans with wagons.
Basically like this:
Code: [Select]
     WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
     .........TTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTD.........
     .........WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.........--> depot
     .........W                                    W.........
     WWWWWW...W                                    W...WWWWWW
     .....W...W                                    W...W
     .....W...W                                    W...W
     .....W...W                                    W...W
     .....W...W                                    W...W
     .....W...W                                    W...W
     .....W...W                                    W...W
     .....W...WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW...W
     .....W............................................W
     .....W............................................W
     .....W............................................W
     .....WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

T - trap
W - wall
D- door
. - empty floor

I would also add drawbridges to seal off the two passages, just in case.

yes thats the tunnel entrance I am using at the moment, but is it possible to secure something like this:

Code: [Select]
     WWWWWWWWWWWWMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
     W:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::M
     W:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::M
     W:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::M
     W:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::M
     W:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::WWWW
     B:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::B...
     B:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::B...
     B:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::B...
     W:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::WWWW
     W:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::M
     W:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::M
     W:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::M
     W:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::M
     WWWWWWWWWWWWMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

T - trap
W - wall
M - mountain z-level differs
B - Bridge
D - door
. - roofed floor
: - open floor

without having to worry about enemies climbing down from the mountain walls into the courtyard with the depot / pastures? I mean you could wall the whole thing in with stepped walls or one gigantic one, but then you are just building an above ground fortress not an entrance to a mountain.

How do any of you secure your fortress anyhow? I mean there are basically just three options or not?
- Having a above ground wall fortification on all sides and being a total Hilldwarf ;-)
- A single 3x3x1(z) tunnel entrance which doesn't project the glory of your fort to the outside (I know "who cares?" ... I do)
- or a carved out mountain entrance with a courtyard wich is vulnerable from "behind/above" the mountain.

Am I missing something?

Didn't know that about bees.
I thought about dropping refuse into magma, but I read about Magma Mist, and since my forges sit right on top the magma layer I didn't want to deal with that since I am still learning. http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Magma_mist

I thought about the overhanging floors too, but I wanted to be sure that work first. Having a cyclops climb into my forge was one thing, but a whole siege? Is there any documentation on how the path finding is with overhanging floors?

The thing is I can't build a back entrance to a volcano. It's just open from above, and my smithy is right on top of the magma layer. I just don't want them to get in from above / have to build two perimeters. In case of the volcano the entrance and the "above" are 24 z-levels apart. I don't have the military to support two fronts and running back and forth is tedious and not feasable if they siege both ends. I guess I could build it shut and channel magma inside or roof it, but having a secure open space is nice for refuse and beekeeping. Who climbs into a volcano anyhow?^^

I didn't know that fortifications were unclimbable. Kinda doesn't make sense, shouldn't they be even more climable than walls? Having spaces to set a foot in and all. I guess I'll try that then.
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Climber only says that smooth stone is unclimbable, but it's hard to get those since you have to build it out if unmined stone.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / How to secure from above (Noob Question?)

Hi,

I am new to the game (as in I only played for a month now) but I read wiki and google ect. to normally learn what I need, but I can't find an answer to that.

So is it possible to secure a Fortress from above (I don't mean flyers).

The question is about two fortresses I made, the first one is I wanted to build something akin to this: http://media-curse.cursecdn.com/attachments/41/708/DwarfSlayerKeep.jpg
because awesome^^ lol, so I digged into a mountain range but ended up still putting defenses around the top because I didn't want enemies to climb down from above to circumvent my defenses below.

The second one I build a fortress on a map with a volcano, and breached the open "chamber" and had a cycolps climb down from above to wreak havoc on my smiths and magma forges. So I ended up smoothing parts of the top layers of the volcano to make it unclimable but it bugged me too. Also I don't know how siege engines work (never survived that long) and if smooth stone even works later on, and I really don't want nasty suprises later...

So is there a sure and secure way to prevent enemies to be able to climb down a wall into an open area of your fortress? What if I make surrounding floors and then remove the stairs so there won't be a wall to climb down from? Would that work? I just want them to try and breach my main entrance like they are "supposed" to^^ (Damn enemies not doing what I want ;-))

Just putting that out there robbing myself of the "Fun" of finding out what works and what doesn't.

the first Video is from March 2013.
It is nice, since he explaines a lot of the basic things so you can get started.
