DF General Discussion / Re: Hammers or Axes? Which is more Dwarf-y?
« on: August 26, 2008, 01:03:41 pm »
You can argue either option successfully.
Axes: Since dwarves trace their roots all the way back to Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, axes are a logical choice. Gimli is the quintessential dwarf warrior and he wields an axe.
Hammers: In D&D-style role-playing games dwarves are most commonly played as clerics/paladins/priests. As such it makes more sense for them to use hammers instead of edged weapons.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Fortress Names
« on: August 26, 2008, 11:32:44 am »
I found my current fort's name to be rather amusing, especially in light of the dwarven civilization's name:
Civilization name: "The Mighty Syrups"
Fortress name: "Luredsyrup"
Only ultra-mighty dwarves can handle our syrup. It really sticks to the roof of your mouth.

DF Gameplay Questions / Importing steel from the mountainhome
« on: August 18, 2008, 03:07:37 pm »
My current fort has no flux available, so I've been importing all of my steel (and a few chunks of flux) from the mountainhome. However, ever since the King arrived and my fortress became a mountainhome itself, the liaison never comes any more.
Dwarven caravans still arrive regularly, but they never bring any steel bars or flux.
Am I doomed to never getting steel again?

DF Bug Reports / [39f] Cursor isn't centered when screen size increased
« on: August 10, 2008, 07:44:47 am »
This is just a minor annoyance, but still an annoyance... when you increase your screen size (like to 80x40) and then press 'd' to make designations, or 'k' to look around, or 'q' to inspect buildings, etc... the little "X" cursor isn't centered properly. It looks like the cursor is centering itself based on the assumption that your screen size is 80x25.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Adventurer bling?
« on: July 29, 2008, 05:19:22 pm »
I'd never noticed this before, so please excuse me if it isn't new information
I went on a killing spree with my adventurer. The total death count was something like 20 goblins and 60 humans. Anyway, I retired him as a peasant for a while so I could try other things. When I started playing him again, I looked at his inventory and noticed that he's now wearing jewelry!
In fact, he's wearing LOTS of jewely. About six PAGES of it: human bone crowns, human bone bracelets, goblin bone earings, etc... He probably looks like some sort of twisted witch-doctor.
Am I correct in assuming that these are supposed to be "trophies" from his previous kills? I never explicitly picked up this kind of stuff before.

DF Bug Reports / Re: [39d] embark doesnt show features?
« on: July 23, 2008, 12:17:13 pm »
The features are showing up on my embark screen. I can see chasms, lava, underground pools, "Other Features", everything.
Perhaps you forgot to save the worldgen parameters before creating the world?

DF Bug Reports / [39d] Mining issue - dwarf stops mining up/down shaft
« on: July 23, 2008, 12:11:55 pm »
I just installed 39d. I've encountered the following issue when trying to dig an Up/Down staircase across multiple levels.
After designating the staircase to be dug, my dwarf stops digging after the 1st tile. He won't continue digging the staircase on the Z-level below. I can see that the designation on the next level is clearly visible and ought to be accessible.
If I re-designate the next staircase then the dwarf will start digging again. But he stops when he's finished with THAT staircase, and I have to re-designate the staircase below that.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Symbol '=' on world map
« on: July 22, 2008, 11:51:08 am »
More answers abound! I looked up one of the dwarves in Legend mode... he was a survivor from one of my previously abandoned fortresses! I didn't recognize the poor little fellow.
*spoilers below*
The group of dwarves is extremely large because I was attempting to reclaim a botched attempt at undermining a goblin fortress. While digging beneath the goblin towers, I (totally by accident) released the Hidden Fun Stuff. The resulting carnage was really quite impressive. Goblins, human prisoners, dwarves, and dozens of babbling denizens of the underworld were running in every direction. Demons were hurling a constant stream of fireballs. Body parts of all types littered the multi-level goblin fortresses. My poor dwarves were trapped on the top floor of one of the towers (how the heck they got the wagon up there I'll never know).
The battle brought my computer to a crawl, so I abandoned... and now I find the survivors wandering the world map

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Symbol '=' on world map
« on: July 22, 2008, 11:41:17 am »
Looks like I've answered my own question. I tried entering the site a little later, and since there were multiple objects on that tile of the world map it gave me a choice of which one I wanted to visit. One of them was a "migrating group". So it looks like they're just migrating dwarves.
Only they don't appear to be migrating to anywhere in particular. They keep traveling back and forth between two human towns.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Symbol '=' on world map
« on: July 22, 2008, 11:20:56 am »
I was traveling the world map in Adventure mode when I noticed something else moving. It was represented by an '=' symbol. At first I thought it was a storm; but it was moving much too slowly. I caught up with it and entered the site. I was immediately surrounded by a group of about 30 dwarves.
Who are these guys? Are they refugees? An army? Unfortunately I couldn't get any information out of them, because they keep saying "Ask me when I've returned to my home!"
Only a small number of them appear to be military dwarves. The rest have normal professions: engineer, craftsdwarf, stoneworker, etc... They do not move at all while I'm there, but if I go back to traveling on the world map then the group keeps moving.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: churches are in a word hilarious
« on: July 17, 2008, 01:44:39 pm »I went in in dwarf mode, and piped fish from the local mountain river. The sturgeons and carp ate them.
Ah, enlightenment! They have become one with the fish.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Megabeasts are now much harder
« on: July 16, 2008, 12:25:04 pm »PS: Already found another quest type. I call it "lazy suicide" (why did the guards try to kill me afterwards? It's not like I was not asked to kill her - by nothing less than The Touchy Nations themselves! Touchy people, that bunch..):
That's the most unique quest I've seen to date. So he murdered his own grandfather and then asked you to kill him for it? It should probably be reported as a bug.

DF General Discussion / Re: regional prospector needs an update?
« on: July 16, 2008, 10:16:54 am »
Regional prospector is an invaluable tool. It REALLY sucks to spend hours searching through 20 Z-levels of solid rock, only to find that there's no magma, no HFS, no underground features of any kind.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Cliffs?
« on: July 15, 2008, 04:19:03 pm »
There's a new worldgen parameter which is something like "Gradually erode extremely steep cliffs". It's on by default. Maybe if you turn it off then the cliffs will return?
