DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Training offensive skills

I took the advice of the wiki and stabbed and beat a horse until it couldn't stand and it eyeballs were just gore, then I beat it with my spear until I felt bad enough that I'd rather put it out of its misery. Does anyone else not feel remorse or a little fucked up mutilating and then beating, repeatedly as it comes in and out of consciousness due to pain, a horse or any animal so savagely for personal gain? Well, I can't say i'd want to do that anymore, suggestions for a less cruel way to get my weapon skills to legendary?

I've ran into a problem, while trying to get around a river that encompasses the entire continent in order to gain access to a town, I ran into an issue. As I was traveling, it got dark and I became thirsty and tired. Right before I went to sleep, I went to the river when suddenly an alligator about 9 tiles away started towards me. I went to the nearest tree and started climbing, the alligator made a mighty leap up and bit my leg (from tiles away some how), but I was still climbing. Once I stopped, sure I was out of the jumping range of the alligator, I let go of the branches and went to waiting. Once the gators leapt away and went about their business, I tried to sleep, but that isn't aloud near rivers, so I decided to climb down, but I cant stand up so im unable to grab branches with my perfectly ok hands, so I can't get off the tree, nor can I just sleep. I cant jump off, nor can I just fall off intentionally. How can I progress? How can I get off the tree?

I think it would be fun to sit down and play a beastman civ. Where you would be the first of your kind creating an urban city like the greeks. I thought it would be cool if I could run a tribe of eaglemen from a meagre 7 to 15 and slowly build their population to over 100. It would be a dream to create an Eagleman empire? Nothing more 'Merica than that Id say.
How would I make this happen with the raws and such?

This is something I have always been confused about, considering everyone tells me to follow these steps to accept quests from civilization or settlement leaders:
  • Dialogue > Inquire troubles > ask about bandits > ???? I usually select, "ask for direfctions to ____"
  • Press "Q" > press "t", that button pins stuff, it doesnt go to tasks like everyone claims > do implied mission
  • Go back to civilization/settlement leader > flop around dialogue for 15 minutes because you can't find any way of telling the leader what you did > If you do manage to find something relating to what you did you recieve no confirmation that leader acknowledges

Pls help, he is around my 5th or 6th adventurer to just run around and do things for things sake.
