Forum Games and Roleplaying / Unorthodox Fantasy World-building Thread
« on: October 02, 2016, 07:23:52 pm »
Let's collaborate to make an unique Fantasy setting!

Thread Guidelines Below

- To contribute, make a post adding a detail to the Setting.
- Posts should be complete sentences. Paragraphs are fine to.
- There can only be one detail per post, and posts cannot contradict other posts.
- If you add a detail to another poster's post, quote the post to avoid confusion.
- Don't double-post.
- Don't insert Standard Fantasy Races or Monsters, be original.
- Humans are fine, as long as they're not a single homogeneous culture.
- Not every post needs to be of world-shattering importance, don't ignore the little things.

That's It, Actual Thread Below

The Main Continent has a Geographical makeup and Climate very similar to that of Iceland, although the Continent is roughly the size of Europe. The World is very cold overall, and volcanoes are common. As far as the Continent's inhabitants know, beyond there is nothing but turbulent ocean, and the occasional nearby island.

YOU IS AN OGRE IN A FANTASY WORLD. YOU IS HUNGRY AND LIKES TA SMASH FINGS! WHAT TA YOU DO?

In the Starless Cosmos floats a Massive Yellowed-Orange Sun, it is orbited by one barren planet roughly twice the size of Earth. From the Void come many, many Gods, who resolve to make the World more interesting.

One God, whose form is shaped like a very dapper rubber ducky with a top hat, speaks: "I ENJOY CHEESE! THUSLY, THIS WORLD SHALL BE KNOWN AS CASEUS! WHICH MEANS CHEESE IN ANCIENT LATIN, IF YOU DIDN'T KNOW. MY NAME IS EMAN, I AM THE INVERSELY-REVERSED GOD!"

After speaking EMAN, THE INVERSELY-REVERSED GOD becomes silent, and watches his associates.

A long, long time ago Humanity had a Global Futuristic Society and prospered, but then they went to war with themselves for some reason. After a few *Forgotten Time-Lengths* of a bloody stalemate, both sides realized that they needed better soldiers, and better technology if the war was going to end. Highly specialized nonhuman sapient species were genetically engineered to fight, work, and research new technology better than baseline Humans. Horrifyingly lethal war-beasts were created for the sole-purpose of killing enemy soldiers, superior livestock were designed for efficiency and tastiness, and Artificial Robots were made to accomplish a massive variety of functions. Awesome Technological marvels were forged to further the war Effort, and advance society as a whole.

The End-war went on for many *Forgotten Time-Lengths* before one side managed to overcome the other. As the victorious armies marched on the defeated capital, the sore losers decided to End the world instead of submit. They launched all of their Nukes at once, destroying the World in an event known as The Blastenning. The World was Blasted so hard that a Rift to another dimension opened, letting Magic and Spirits into the World, which is possible because of *insert plausible reasons here*. After that, the Rift closed.

After a bajillion or so *Forgotten Time-Lengths* the World looks like a ripoff fusion of Adventure Time, Mad Max, and Gamma World, with random bits and pieces from loads of other stuff thrown in for Lulz. Technology is mish-mashed, anachronistic technology, bits and pieces of modern technology, and futuristic relics coexist, the knowledge of the Old Ones has been largely forgotten, and the futuristic relics are seen as "magical" The Ecosystem is strange, new species have developed and mutated due to Magic and Radioactive pollution leftover from the Blastenning. People, (Sapient Species) have learned to harness Magic, Wizards and Sorcerers are quite rare, and extremely varied in their capabilities and powers. Clerics swear fealty to a Deity (Extra-Dimensional Spirit charlatan feeding off of mortal worship) and further it's cause, in exchange for "Holy" Power. Warlocks sell their souls, or agree to collect souls, or sacrifice something extremely valuable to a Spirit in exchange for instant Magical Power.

Many Factions vie for power and influence among the Wastes for their own goals. Monsters, Mutants, and Marauders are everywhere. There are many Ancient Ruins filled with goodies that haven't yet been pillaged. All in all, the World is perfect for Adventurers, and that's where You come in.

You are an Adventurer who is controlled by the mysterious voices in his head, with or without knowing it.

What is your Name? This can be a nickname, or include a title.

What is your Race? No Fantasy-Stock Races, think of something unique, the possibilities are literally infinite. Nothing OP, keep in mind, Regular Humans are nearly extinct. Remember the genetic engineering and pollution.

What is your Class? This can be literally anything, don't choose Wizard or Sorcerer right now. If you choose a Magic-Based Class, (Fire Mage, Death Mage, Laser Mage, etc.) you'll get to choose between them later, I'll describe the difference later. If you choose to be a Cleric, describe your religion, and patron Deity or Deities. If you choose to be a Warlock, describe the Spirit that granted you power, and the price you paid for it. Keep in mind, Classes like Gunslinger, or Laser Specialist are perfectly valid choices.

What is your backstory? Just write two vague sentences about your major life events, and why you became an Adventurer. Amnesia is an acceptable backstory.

How old are you? This probably has to do with your Race choice.

What Attribute do you excel at, and what Attribute are you terrible at? Are you strong but stupid? Weak but quick? Smart but unwise? I'm going off of the D&D system for this.

Besides Adventuring, do you have a Hobby? Choose an Out-Of-Class Skill.

And Finally, do you know about the mysterious voices? Yes or No.

((OOC: Pardon the rambling, but I had this idea and had to write it before I forgot. Updates will be somewhat infrequent, but detailed. This will be quite ridiculous and !!FUN!! If that's not your cup of tea, there's no need to post.))

Now, before we begin, I'm going to lay down some rules to keep things organized.

Rules:

1.) When someone posts, they ask a question about the setting, and answer the question the Poster above them asked. Start the Questions with a Q: and the Answers with a A: For example:

Poster 1:

Q: Did whales go extinct after the zombie plague?

Poster 2:

A: No, they prospered because less humans were hunting them.

Q: What's the easiest way to kill a zombie?

And so on, and so on...

2.) No Double-Posting, it takes away from the point of the Thread, which is to see what kind of Post-Apocalyptic Setting the Bay12 Community can come up with.

3.) Try to be original, if at all possible, try to avoid Cliches.

4.) No Post can contradict another Post, For Example:

Poster 1:

Q.) What kinds of Fish evolved after the chemical spills?

Poster 2:

A.) They mostly died out, and the ones that survived were mutated.

Poster 3:

Answer to Poster 1's Question: A.) The Oceans evaporated, killing all of the Fish.

Poster 3's Post is non-canon because it contradicted Poster 2's Post. If enough People (3-5) propose that Poster 3's Post should be canon instead of Poster 2's Post, I'll setup a 24 Hour Poll to vote.

5.) Please be detailed in Your Posts, please post no one-word answers or questions. Paragraphs and/or multi-sentence answers are all highly encouraged, however.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I'll ask a Question to get us all started.

Q.) What caused the Apocalypse in the first place?

You're a Wizard! What do you do?

Alright everyone, I've been thinking of running a Fantasy RPG for some time now. I'm somewhat burnt-out on standard d&desque games, and I've had a few somewhat outlandish concepts going on in my head for the past few days. I figured, if I was going to GM an unconventional RPG, there's no better place to do it than the Bay12 Forums. I'm going to set up a Poll of the few Campaign Ideas I've had, and whichever one gets the most votes will be the Game I run, in a separate Thread, of course.

If I do actually start a Game, it will have very loose mechanics. It would probably just be 99% 1d20 rolls for combat, with modifiers based on circumstance. A fairly simplistic skill system, and a few generic Character Traits in lieu of Stats or Attributes. With copious amounts of Fluff to make things interesting. Anyways, post your thoughts here and vote in the Poll. Thanks for reading this everybody.

TURN ZERO

In the Beginning, there was nothing but formless and empty Void. Over the eons, the Void began to coalesce, forming an enormous ball of Eternal Fire, orbited by several vast Spheres of Earth, many smaller Spheres orbited the larger Spheres. This new form of reality remained stagnant for many centuries, but eventually, a spark of light came from the Void. The light, imbued with the power of Creation, became sentient, and awakened with great power to Shape reality. The light reached out with it's power, and shaped the chaotic surface of the largest Sphere. Through the light's Shaping, the first continent was made, and on it, new life flourished. Pleased with it's Creation, the light left the new world to it's fate, to travel the cosmos, eternally seeding life among the Void. For millennia, the world remained unchanged, but now, new Shapers of Creation are emerging, how they will change the world is yet to be seen.

THE DIVINES HAVE AWOKEN!

There are Six Divines, each of them imbued with World-Shattering Power. Shennias, Mystical Gardener. Envaruk, Absolute Fear Incarnate. Nix, He Who Strengthens. Avignon, Master of The Mortal Clay. The Dreamer of Truth, Seeker of Reality. And Last, but not Least, Moznarx Hogroof, Lord of Ordered Chaos. The World is theirs to Shape and Mold as they see fit. What shall come of it, shall be seen in time.

Before we get started, here are some major points of the Setting:

- In ancient times, Humanity had ascended to a near godlike, futuristic level of Technology. For unknown reasons, a War was fought, and catastrophic weapons were used that irrevocably ruined the Earth. After the Great Shattering, a pittance of Humans survived, both in places that were isolated and largely spared from the destruction, and in massive, Fortified Bunkers filled with the remnants of the Governing Elite.

- Ancient Humans genetically engineered many new organisms, and even new Subspecies of Humanoids. These New Lifeforms were designed to accomplish certain tasks, and some were perfectly suited to the Post-Fall World. After the End, some of these 'Anomalies' have spread and flourished. Non-Human sentients are discriminated against in most places, are often enslaved, and are quite rare. Many of the Ancients also engineered themselves to have beneficial traits, and many of the Augmented Humans have passed on their beneficial genes to their children. These 'Augs' have many useful abilities, ranging from perfect night-vision, to immunity to disease, to enhanced strength, and many others besides these.

- The Environment was corrupted by the Great Shattering, and much of the world is inhospitable, and often Radioactive desert, swamp, or ruins. Deformed Mutants roam these places, and will often consume non-mutants. Mega-Storms and other insidious Weather plague Survivors. The world was flooded in some places, and in other places, succumbed to drought. The continents were reformed and shattered by the Great War.

- As the Centuries passed, the knowledge of Old-Tech was forgotten, and the Culture of the Old Ones was lost or heavily distorted as time went on. Medieval weapons, tools, and armor have all made a comeback, and are commonplace. Primitive, Black-powder firearms and ammunition are manufactured in large amounts, but haven't yet outpaced Medieval armaments. The remaining Old-Tech isn't understood by the people, is thought of as Magical, and is very highly valued for it's abilities. In a few places, patchwork, knock-off Old-Tech is produced in small amounts.

- Civilization is almost entirely made up of inter-warring City-States, and Petty Nations, every kind of Government imaginable is adhered to, at least somewhere. Nomadic, Primitive Tribes are also fairly common, but are slowly being phased out by more advanced societies. Most of these Governments have no authority beyond the length of their blades, and beyond City Walls, the World is a cesspool of Violence and Anarchy. Many mercenary factions, wandering, bloodthirsty marauder hordes, and conquering armies all proliferate in the new World.

You are the Leader of one such group. Now, before we begin here a few questions. What is Your Name, and what Title do Your Men refer to You by? What do You look like? What kind of Warband do You lead? And lastly, What are Your eventual goals?

OK, now that the intro's out of the way, let me explain the Game Mechanics. The Players are the (Gods, Demons, Eldritch Abominations, what have you,) they are the Divine Entities of a newborn World. The Divines can influence the World through Acts, or Actions, if you prefer. There are Three Types of Acts, and each has it's own level of Power.

MIGHTY ACTIONS

Mighty Acts are truly Divine Acts of Power, and they are the highest form of Divine Creation or Destruction. A Mighty Action can do anything from creating a new Magic system, creating a new World or destroying an old one, creating a Species of powerful supernatural beings, or forging an incredibly powerful Artifact capable of slaying even a Titan. Mighty Acts can do nearly anything, and are very overpowered. This is balanced by the difficulty of obtaining them.

MAJOR ACTIONS

Major Acts are Divine Acts of Power, they are moderately Powerful, and strike a balance between the quantity of Minor Acts, and the quality of Mighty Acts. A Major Action can do anything, from creating a new Magical Creature, creating a new Continent or destroying an old one, creating a non-magical Species of Mortals, or forging a powerful Artifact capable of slaying an Elder Dragon. Major Acts are moderately powerful, and useful as well.

MINOR ACTIONS

Minor Acts are Impressive Acts of Power, their effects are somewhat small and weak, however, many Minor Acts can be obtained easily. A Minor Action can do anything, from teaching Mortals a new kind of Technology, creating a new Island or destroying an old one, creating a new Species of Animal, or forging a strong Artifact capable of slaying a Mortal Army. Minor Acts are fairly weak, but very cheap to use.

RULES

-Each Player gains One MIGHTY Action at the start of the Game, whether they want to use it, save it, or break it into smaller Acts is their decision.

-The Players each gain One Major Action per turn. this number cannot be increased or decreased, it is constant.

-The Players may change their Acts into different Acts equal to their Value. Note: It costs nothing to change Acts.

-The Exchange rate of Actions is as follows:

1 Mighty Act is equal to 3 Major Acts, or 9 Minor Acts.
1 Major Act is equal to 3 Minor Acts.
1 Minor Act is equal to 1 Minor Act.

-For Example: Obek spends 3 of his Major Acts to get 1 Mighty Act. Or he spends 1 Mighty Act to get 3 Major Acts. Or he spends 3 Minors Acts to get 1 Major Act.

-The Divines are invincible, and cannot die, they can, however, leave this World at any time. Note: I'd appreciate it if You were more creative in the Destruction of Your tangible enemies than just Smiting them or just Teleporting them to the far reaches of the Void.

-There are no Secret Actions, You're Divines, not sniveling Mortal Bureaucrats.

-To Create an Afterlife, or some other kind of Dimension, it costs One Major Action. This Dimension is then untouchable for other Players, and doesn't have any Game-play effect on the World, barring additional Acts spent to allow it to a limited degree. Mechanically, it's just for Flavor and RP reasons.

-The Goal of the Game is to create an interesting Fantasy Setting, in a Fun Way, keep this in mind when using Acts. Think, would it be more interesting to instantaneously Smite the mortals that another God placed on your Island, or create a Plague to drive them out? Mechanically, both are the same, but canonically, the Plague makes for a better story.

-The World already has an Ecosystem akin to Earth, there is no need to build an Ecosystem from scratch, but if you want to create new Species, go ahead.

-The World isn't Stagnant, Mortals and other Creations will be doing their own Actions. Not as monumental as the Divine's, mind you, but still.

-Each Turn is roughly a Century.

-A Player can do anything, as long as enough Acts are spent.

-At least for the beginning of the Game, I'll only have Six Players, as I don't know if I can handle anymore than that right now.

-I'll wait 24 Hours for Character Templates to be submitted in the OOC Thread, I'll choose the Six Divines based on the quality of Character Submissions, not Posting Speed. I'll attempt to keep the Starting Pantheon Balanced. If a Player wants to quit the Game, they should post in the OOC Thread letting everyone know. If someone hasn't posted in 2 weeks, with no explanation, I'll assume that they quit the Game.

-If You want to, You can waitlist a Character Sheet, until a space clears up.

Alright, Get To Posting.

Let's see what kind of Setting Bay12 can come up with! OK, here are the Rules. You ask a Question about the Setting, and answer the Question the Poster before You asked. Put this, (Q), before each Question, and Put this, (A), before each answer, for cohesiveness. Eventually the Setting will become pretty detailed. I'll ask the First Question.

(Q) How did it End? Was it a Disease, a War, or something else entirely?

Day One

All of You remember the day that it all came falling down. Our Civilization, our Morals, even what it meant to be Human, all of it was destroyed in what seems like an instant. The Dead arose, and with them, they brought Death. They could feel nothing, no pain, no fear, and no mercy. The Dead will stop at nothing to satisfy their endless hunger and they will eat anything with a pulse, but Humans, Humans, are by far, their favorite meal.

If one of the Dead manages to so much as nibble, so much as scratch, a living breathing Human, that Human is Dead. Their Death, their Plague, spreads just under the Skin, with no sign of it's presence. The first symptoms come only Hours after contact, first, they start sweating. Then, they start the coughing, the sneezing, vomiting, the works, and spread their Plague to others. After a day or two, the Fever starts, and it doesn't stop, and nothing, no medicine, no amount of hope, absolutely nothing, can stop it, it gets warmer and warmer until finally, the victim lies Dead.

But by far, the most terrifying part, is the next one. After a few Hours, or a few Days, it all depends, the Body, the Carcass, the Hollow Shell of a Person Long gone, gets up. In a blatant act of defiance to everything Humanity thought it knew, It gets up, and then opens It's Eyes, and Moans. That bone-chilling, soul crushing, unnatural Moan, no one knows why the Dead Moan, maybe It's Hunger, maybe It's Sadness, or Pain, or Rage, or maybe something far worse, but regardless of the emotion behind it, the Moaning never stops. And neither do the Dead.

They can be shot in the Heart, Lit on Fire, Every bone in their Body can be shattered, but they will never stop their Moaning, and they will never stop coming. As long as they have a Leg, they will walk to You, as long as they have an Arm, they will reach for You, and as long as they have a Mouth, they will BITE You. The only way to ensure that the Dead stay that way, is to destroy their Brain, to them, anything else is an inconvenience, they don't bleed, they don't get tired, and their Brain is the one and only thing keeping them going. If that's Destroyed, the Dead, Die.

Not only the Bitten get up, everyone has their Curse, once they clock out, kick the bucket, or pass on, they Get up, and they are Dead. No one knows how the Dead are no longer Dead, No one knows why the Dead Bite, and No one seems to know what Death means Now. If the Brain is destroyed before the Dead get up, they stay Dead, and until the Dead get up, they don't spread anything, No one knows How.

When the Dead started to get up the Government tried to keep it all quiet. Back in the early days, they thought is was just a strain of Rabies, or a Nasty Cold of some kind, and they tried to Quarantine it. But You can't quarantine a Fact of Life. All over the World, the Dead started to get up, Funerals, Cemeteries, anywhere there was a Corpse, there were the Dead. Once the News got out, Panic struck, and the Government couldn't do a thing to stop it. When the Dead reached the Cities, the people were unprepared, and Rioting only spread the Death.

The Bitten spread the Plague like wildfire in Big Cities, and no one knew it came from the Bites and Scratches, by the time Everyone realized it, it was to late. Humanity is now an unwanted trespasser on it's own property, the World belongs to the Dead now. A few Hardened, Embittered Survivors have weathered the Storm of Death, and are now no more than Vultures, picking through the Corpse of Humanity for sustenance, ever wary, always watching, For Death Itself.

Now, after nearly Two Months of struggle, Six capable, or at least lucky, Survivors have banded together in a bid to Survive. An Alcoholic Fisherman, a Gentlemanly Ex-Detective, an Investigative Journalist and her Dog, a nearly Deaf Professional Wrestler, a College Dropout with a Knack for Metalwork, and a mad Criminal, have all been thrown together by some twist of Fate, this is the Story of their attempt to Live in a Dead World.

You are a new God, awakened from the Void by the frantic whispers of a Desperate Mortal. Before You begin, first, tell me a few things about Yourself.

Your Name: This is what Mortals, and Your Colleagues will refer to You by, many Gods have many names, You aren't limited to only One. If You have a preferred Title, put it here.

Your Appearance: This is how You manifest Yourself to Mortals and other Beings, a God's appearance can be changed quite trivially, this isn't binding, just a Default.

Your Sphere, or Spheres: This is, by Far, the most important part of being a God, Your Sphere is essentially, what You have Power over, You get a discount when using Power for something relating to Your Sphere, but gain a penalty when using Power for something relating to the opposite of Your Sphere. For example, a God of Fire could light a village on fire cheaply, but would have a very difficult time flooding it. There is not Limit to the amount of Spheres You may choose, but the more Spheres You have, the smaller the Bonuses (and Penalties) will be for each one. The more Specialized a Sphere is, the Higher it's Bonus is, making up for it's lack of versatility.
