DF Suggestions / Colossi can be made out of any metal
« on: December 12, 2015, 02:38:37 pm »
While bronze collosi would still be the most common, imagine the fun of having an adamantium or steel colossus attacking your fortress, or the relief in discovering that the colossus attacking you is made of tin.

DF Gameplay Questions / A quick question about burrows
« on: November 29, 2015, 04:38:32 pm »
If I create a burrow that covers a jeweler's workshop and a furniture stockpile, and then restrict workshops to that burrow, should the end result be that the jeweler's shop will only use materials from that stockpile?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Brand new iron mail shirts suddenly tattered?
« on: November 29, 2015, 02:04:58 pm »
In the spring I had my Legendary Armorsmith make four iron mail shirts. Two were masterpiece, one was regular, and the other was well-crafted. It is now summer, and upon receiving word that one of my carpenters made a masterpiece wooden shield, I checked my armor bin to find every single iron mail shirt with X's around them, indicating they are "showing signs of wear". The shirts were never worn by anybody.

Can someone explain to me what happened?

As the title suggests, I basically spend all my time in DF playing Adventure Mode, slaying goblins and megabeasts and whatnot. However, I want to try and start a fortress, but I have no clue on how to do it.

-How do I do farming (and food production in general) exactly?

-Is it a good idea to put my fortress on or near a volcano? Free magma is probably awesome, but I don't know much about any other costs.

-Should I go underground as soon as possible? Or should that be the very first thing I do upon starting a new fortress?

-How angry will a dwarf get if he does not have access to alcohol? Is a river an insufficient source of hydration?

-UNRELATED QUESTION: Is it possible to create a "Colloseum" in which enemy captives can battle against your war animals? (If the answer is no, this is going straight to the suggestions section)

(There will be more questions to come)

DF Suggestions / Adventure Mode scenario suggestions
« on: November 22, 2015, 11:49:51 am »
I checked through the planned features list, and I didn't see this. Very sorry if I missed it and I'm just re-stating something they're already planning on doing, but here it is:

One scenario your adventurer can start off as is as an assasin, hitman, whatever you want to call it. You can take jobs for criminal organizations, monarchs, those with special interests in the government, wealthy citizens, really anyone with money that wants someone else dead. The idea would be to kill that person quickly and discreetly and get out of the area quickly so as to avoid getting caught.

ALSO: Monster Hunter profession

You would be given missions to kill a cyclops, titan, colossus, etc, with the added requirement to bring back some part of its body (usually the head) as proof that you killed it in order to claim a reward.

DF Suggestions / Biological/Chemical Warfare?
« on: November 22, 2015, 11:29:35 am »
So in real life, it is possible to "milk" venomous creatures for their venom, the most common use of it being to turn it into antivenoms. While this is too far into the future for the DF setting, I suggest an alternate use for the venom in the game: Weaponize it.

Imagine if your dwarves could capture a giant cave spider and milk it's venom. Or create a controlled colony of smaller, but still deadly, snakes and spiders. The venom could be stored in barrels, and when an attacker comes, your marksdwarf would dip his crossbow bolt into the barrel and, with a single shot, take down a goblin.

This next suggestion is more sci-fi, but what if the venom could alternatively be boiled into a gas? Stored in glass canisters, the gas bombs would be flung out of catapults or dropped from the walls to wipe out groups of enemies.

DF Community Games & Stories / The Story Of A Dwarven Monster-Slayer
« on: October 11, 2015, 01:21:21 pm »
(Unfortunately I haven't taken any screenshots yet, so no pictures of the events that happened as of yet)

Eric Veludil, Swordsdwarf

World: Strasp Ustra, the Planet of Forever

Started up another new world, hoping to become a Dwarven beast slayer. Starting off in the underground caverns of a Dwarven mountain hall has already provided tons of action. First, I saw a cave crocodile tear open the head of a useless axedwarf who got himself caught in spider webs. I barely killed the croc in time to save the axedwarf. His head was cut open, but the bleeding stopped and there was no further damage, so i figured leaving him there would be fine. Travelling further down the hall, I found a Macedwarf and a Hammerdwarf.

I also found something odd. A swarm of Troglodytes were rushing in our direction. But they weren't attacking. They were running from something. Many were already injured in one way or another. After working with the two other dwarves to kill the troglodytes, I proceeded further down the hall to find a giant cave toad next to a dead troglodyte. That's what they were running from.

The hammerdwarf is Armok-knows-where, leaving only me and the Macedwarf to deal with it. The fight was going well at first. The macedwarf got multiple good hits on the toad but it didn't look like his bronze mace was strong enough to break its bones. It started going wrong when the toad charged and knocked over the macedwarf. It then bit and ripped his right foot off. Then it bit his mace arm and collapsed it by shaking it around a lot.

(If you're wondering why I haven't helped yet, it's because that dwarf has a steel shield and I wanted him to die so I could get it)

(Further updates will have screenshots in them)

EDIT: Turns out the ill-fated Macedwarf is actually a girl

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Some help with a weird lair.
« on: October 10, 2015, 12:42:01 pm »
I'm still fairly new to this game, so any help would be appreciated.

I found a lair while adventuring in a new world I created. I went in to explore, and all I found was a peasant. Just this one guy. There's nothing else in there. I asked him about his profession and he said he used to be a ranger.

What is he doing down here?

DF Gameplay Questions / Navigating across Z axis?
« on: March 21, 2015, 02:44:31 pm »
Hi all,

I have a question regarding looking around in the biome I set up my fortress in. I know how to navigate along the X and Y axis when looking around, but how do I view different Z levels?

(This question arised from the following scenario: A Giant Grasshopper came near my base, one of my dogs chased after it and beat it up. It chased the grasshopper up an upwards slope, and came back down alone. I'm assuming it killed the grasshopper up there and I want to butcher its corpse)
