General Discussion / Re: Fanfic Recomendations
« on: April 05, 2015, 03:13:07 am »
I know of a few fics, though I'm not sure who or what would find interest in them.

Evolution - Final Fantasy XIII - Yes, yes, I've heard about all of the controversy surrounding this game, but bear with me for a moment. This fic is unique, powerful, and downright chilling. The plot doesn't strictly follow canon, but instead uses it as a guide, changing some elements in the Fabula Nova Crystallis mythos, among general event changes to tie in with the tone. It cuts and gouges into Lightning's psyche, detailing a slow and agonizing descent into a monstrous madness. This fic is dark, but not without reason. For an idea of how dark it gets, the italicized part of Chapter 14 can give you an idea without story context. It's one hell of a read, but unfortunately unfinished. Still, there's more than enough to keep you busy, scaling in at 269,000 words.

Whispers of the Gods - Final Fantasy XIII - Yeah, it's another one of these. This fic is quality high-fantasy AU material. Gods, Goddesses, betrayal, feels, and chaos. There's a lot more backstory to the characters than what may initially be seen. Lots of ups and downs, and a rather fun read. Once again, unfinished, but enough to keep you entertained and busy.

The Red Queen - RWBY - A rather dark fic based around the attempted assassination of Ruby Rose by her peers. She wants revenge, and that vengeance allows her to make some very unlikely allies. Even though her intentions are fit for a psychopath, she still manages to squeeze in her happy-go-lucky personality into everything she does. Worth taking a look at.

*All fics in this post contain minimal shipping, even canonical ones. They're also not mine.

So, if I'm getting this right at 2:30 in the morning, "anime" is only a label based upon the ethnicity/location of who initially created the animation? I get that labels are arbitrary, but why have two different threads for such a distinction? Although, now that I think about it, it's probably to stop a lot of frustration and annoyance with too many people discussing different things on one thread.

I looked in the western animation thread and I'm quite surprised to see Avatar: TLA and LOK discussions there instead of here. That just confuses me even more, as I'm fairly certain those are considered "anime" to some extent.

And yes, JRPG's and WRPG's are not limited to country borders. Just watch this video and maybe the following two.

Basically, all animation is called 'anime' in Japan, regardless of style.
That's like saying Japan can only make Japanese RPG's, and everywhere else can only make Western RPG's, when it turns out that they are two completely different genres with their own defining characteristics. Any country can make a J-RPG, and Japan can make a W-RPG. The same can be said for anime.

RWBY is an odd case, though. The way color is utilized in the animation definitely points to some kind of anime style, but the total 3-dimensional rendering stops it from being a "true" anime. Where it was made is completely irrelevant.

Just my view on that subject. I don't really watch anime to begin with. Just wanted to add something that seemed to be absent from discussion. Don't Jreengus me.

I don't think I've seen a discussion on RWBY on here, so I'll just put "RWBY" here.
