I think I'll keep the system of soft and hard deadlines going, just to keep the game steadily moving.

Soft deadline for Design Phase 0000 is 8 PM Central time, Sunday February 18th.

Hard deadline for Design Phase 0000 is 8 PM Central time, Monday February 19th.

In this case, there's no explicit benefit for getting things in before the soft deadline as opposed to the hard one, other than my gratitude.

This is organized by Fallacy and it scares me.

But Kashyyk asked me to join Red so I'll be brave and have a look.

Welcome aboard! I'm glad my game design habits are growing infamous.

Shift Phase 0000:

The Red Entity hears the voices of their fragments, and stretches their power over the battlefield. The expanse of blank, grey stone Shifts and enters a state of uncertain flux. What was a simple battlefield soon becomes relatively far more complex, as the terrain shifts at every Battle Phase's end.

Battle Phase rules updated.

The Blue Entity listens, considers, and acts. Their power seeps into the sediment of the design process, and adds a new uncertainty. What shall happen if the war-tools of the dominant faction suddenly fall into the hands of the current lesser competitor?

Design Phase rules updated.

It is now the Design Phase.

As a reminder, for the first three Design Phases, each team gets two Designs instead of one. The first (decide which is first however you please) Design each team makes will receive a +1 roll bonus, as well, as both teams decided a Shift before the soft deadline.

Metacrystal and You: A Short Generic Materials Primer

You may have noticed that your starting Designs mention metacrystal. Metacrystal is a generic material. Essentially, its properties are arbitrary, but the further you push it, the greater the expense and complexity of your Designs will be. Your faction's Entities would rather minimize their direct involvement in this conflict, as per the Arms Race rules (who's heard of an engineer personally joining the fighting in an Arms Race, outside of finale-type turns?). As such, the Designs you create are transmitted to your Rooks, which then operate your Gates to create them.

The bad news is, this makes Designs using materials that aren't metacrystal a bit difficult.

The good news is, you can Shift the game. If you want more things to work with than metacrystal, all you have to do is Shift that.

The other good news is, you're entirely capable of Designing better means of production. The 'Rooks-control-Gates' means I described are just what you have access to right now. That can change.

Just a reminder that the soft deadline for the first Shift Phase is in 30 minutes, and making a selection before the soft deadline awards a +1 bonus to your first Design.

At that point I would jumble the mechanics together and see what comes out on the other end. You'd probably get some kind of 'compromise' mechanic that melds the two.

21
Hm, think about it this way. Designs exist within the space of the mechanics. That's not to say every design needs a unique mechanical foundation, because designing itself is a mechanic.

So sure, you can design a named hero individual unit without a Named Heroes mechanic. The results might be lacking in comparison to such a design that has a specific special mechanic bolstering it, though.

Alright, things appear to have slowed down so let me get things on schedule.

Soft end of the first Shift Phase is 8 PM, Wednesday, February 14th. I'd love to have both teams finalize their first Shifts by then.

Hard end of the first Shift Phase is 8 PM, Thursday, February 15th. Any team that doesn't have a winning vote by then, I'll just select a Shift from their proposals at random.

As an incentive to get things moving, each team that gets their first Shift selected before the soft deadline will get a +1 roll bonus to their first Design of the first Design Phase.

Both teams can earn this bonus.

A rule of thumb I like to use in BYOR design is, each role should have internal synergy, external interaction, and a way to get fucked over.

What that basically means is that the role has effects and powers that support the other effects and powers it has, and it has some way to support or counter some other roles that exist, and there's at least two ways that it's countered.

Additionally, even in a vacuum, where the other roles it's interacting with are neutral towards it, it still needs to provide some utility.

Meta-powers are like cayenne pepper. A little makes a game spicier, too much makes it inedible.

You'll get better at designing BYORs with time and practice. You certainly did better than many of my earlier attempts.

I'd fill in the blanks by defining a short list of generic, bland-ish, terrains. Examples would be 'Forest', 'Desert', 'Plains', 'Wetlands'.

A later Shift could redefine those terrains, of course, or you could try to do it all at once, at higher risk of running into the 'scope' and 'complexity' limits.

It's actually two separate references in a trenchcoat.

Current roster:

Red Faction: Rockeater (technically), SamSpeeds, NUKE9.13, Man of Paper, Kashyyk, Crystalizedmire, Quarque
Blue Faction: Maximum Spin, TricMagic, Funk, Jerick, Thanatos Russ, Failbird105

Things are shaping up nicely.

So it's possible to shift the existence of two teams?

Yes. If you want to that badly, and manage to get your team to go along with it, yes.

Under the scope condition I may limit that in some way, but it's not inherently undoable.

The blue-colored Entity pondered, a thousand threads of thought coalescing into a single conclusion in an instant. They would simply have to teach the red-colored Entity the true meaning of the Arms Race.

They split, personality-fragments teeming around them, whispering to them. What to Shift. What to Design.

They decided that they would be victorious, and the red Entity would see the error of their ways.

They began their creation, metacrystal taking shape and form and gaining purpose. They would have no need to directly strike the other Entity, since they would conquer this battlefield.

It is the first Shift Phase. What would you like to change about the game? I'll recommend that you use a vote box to keep track of the votes.

The red-colored Entity was displeased. It took only moments to make their decision. They would simply have to teach the blue Entity the error of their ways, in the only way they could understand.

They called up their advisors, fragments of self that nonetheless possessed individual names, personalities, identities.

They began their creation. Though they had power to destroy or shape a thousand worlds, it would be wrong to use that to directly strike the other Entity. There was no need to escalate things beyond the total conquest of this battlefield.

Two Entities stood face to face, though whether either of them had faces to begin with was a question that no mortal could answer.

One of the two was arguing for the creation of a war between republics, with historically-accurate equipment and weapons mimicking the 'World War 1' era of the metatemplate 'Earth'. The other suggested a more audacious creation, where 'magical' 'warstriders' would be utilized by opposed kingdoms. The debate grew more and more heated.

"The merit of historical accuracy cannot be denied. More rigid physics allow for more complex engineering."

"The limitation to metatemplate 'Earth' physics will stifle the creativity of the engineers. Historical accuracy limits development paths."

The unthinkable happened. One of the Entities grew frustrated, and threw the first strike, an array of dimensional shear cutting through superstrings and destroying a thousand worlds. It was the equivalent of an insulting slap. The other Entity looked back, incredulous.

The Entities separated, and their battle truly began, in the typical mode of their species.

This is an Arms Race where you make the rules. Each player may join one team and only one team - either Red Faction or Blue Faction.

Please join whichever team has fewer active players, for balance's sake.

Once you've joined a team, only view that team's thread and this thread, since that's basically required for an arms race to work.

I feel like my role fit very well thematically, especially with the whole 'screws with roleflips' thing, but ironically that passive made things harder for me later on.

It seemed to fit very well thematically, but the utility was a bit questionable.

Overall I feel like the spheres did what I wanted in bringing the choice element from Choose Your Own Mafia, but retaining a finer level of control over the setup for a more cohesive experience. Some proposed grid changes:

- Overpowered will be split up into a few sub-components
- Something to do with Items will be a sphere of its own
- Suspicious will be revamped to make it, well, more suspicious

Maybe add a 'warp' mechanic, where a submission can link two spheres that are separated by precisely one gap, but only once?
