Other Games / Re: Dungeons of Dredmor - Lutefisk for the Lutefisk God
« on: December 28, 2011, 12:48:01 am »
It's not fair. I spend the night clearing out two entire levels and the game crashes. This is the second time it's done this, and only with my viking-magic/maces/blood magic character. It's like the game doesn't want me progressing through the early levels so easily!

In other news, I've made it farther in the dungeon than I ever have with a new rogue-classed character. I made it all the way to dungeon level 6 before I made the ultimately fatal decision of taking that trans-dimensional dodge ability. Is that not one of the worst abilities? Not only does it teleport me away from the ranged guys that I worked so hard to close the distance on, but it also has this habit of teleporting me into groups of monsters.

The worst is when my rogue's dodge ability teleported him into the middle of a monster zoo with something like 94 hard-hitting monsters. It wouldn't have been so bad if it would have let me use my escape abilities, but no, cue 5 minutes of my rogue dodging attacks and teleporting DEEPER into the zoo! I would like to say that death came quickly, but it didn't, it took another 5 minutes of random dodge-teleporting before my character finally met his end.

You can give me your crates. I pay 1 scrap for 16 crates.

My inventory is full so I need to get rid of my crates. I've deleted like 10 in the last couple of playing sessions. I still have series #1 crates laying around. If you want them, you can have them.

That is hilarious, Shook. I could totally see Dwarves doing that.

Simple art.. Second done with a tablet. Just saying, but criticism would be welcome.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Try to avoid putting the horizon line in the center.  It tends to look better if it's closer to either the top or bottom.  You can actually do that in this picture by cropping it, so that some of the bottom is cut off.  The only thing down there is some grass, so you won't lose much.

Rule of composition #44: Focus and/or a majority of composition lines placed in the centre tend to result in a boring picture.

Exploit the Rule of Thirds and the Golden Ratio to your benefit.

Dwarven haulers.

Nice (and cute too), but your picture would benefit from a proper focal point. Right now, everything has roughly the same importance (the eye is drawn to everywhere in the picture) which makes it slightly uncomfortable to look at as well as lacking a proper subject. Right now, my eye focuses the most on that thick black dividing line a little shy of the one-third mark from the left of the picture, which I don't think is the place you want viewers to focus on.

Simulating camera focus on your desired subject whilst removing detail and saturation from things behind and in front of it usually works. I suggest you make that black line to the left less loud as well.

Many thanks for posting a link to the Rule of Thirds. I read it and learned something. :)

As for Fault's picture, I believe it lacks a general focus because it's ultimately going to be sequential art. The finished product will have speech bubbles occupying the majority of that empty space which will then draw the eyes into the two conversing dwarves. Think of the viewer as a passing dwarf, not entirely interested about anything going on in the current picture until he catches the conversation. This leads him into the next panel which should focus on the two dwarves talking to each other.

It's probably not the best excuse, but you have to remember that when you're working with comics, flow is as important, if not more important than focus.  ;)

I could be wrong though.

So, working on a warrior-y build that is supplemented by magic and kind of rogue-y.
Skills right now are:
1. Maces
2. Shield-bearer
3. Master of Arms
4. Viking Wizardry
5. Perception
6. Smithing
7. Burglary

-snip-

Thinking of maybe replacing maces with axes, possibly. If I don't get rid of Burglary, I might want to replace Perception with something as well, since Burglary already gives trap skills. Might want to pick up Berserker Rage, for even more extra damage and defense, or possibly Assassination. Archaeology is also kind of a possibility, more for the skills it gives though, like Ancient Kronian Ritual and It Belongs in a Museum.

Maces are very nice because their AoE special attack hits 6 targets grouped in front of you rather than all around you. So axes are really only good if you get surrounded, which won't be often if you choose to play it tactically.

My most successful character had these skills:
1. Maces
2. Shield-Bearer
3. Master of Arms
4. Viking Wizardry
5. Astrology
6. Blood Magic
7. Berserker Rage

I found that Blood Magic works very well with Viking Wizardry, because it means you don't ever need to recast your main weapon-enhancing spell, it will stay up forever. Combined with Astrology's defensive buffs, it felt like I was playing some sort of kick-ass paladin. I had made it further than any other character with this build and it wasn't even death finally stopped him! My character was brought low by a game crash. :(

My brother ended up buying Dungeons of Dredmor for me when it was on sale ($1.75, GOOD price!). So don't gift it to me, Meta. Give it to whoever was in second place during the Dec 17th draw, or just do a new draw. It's up to you.

Sending you a pm just incase you miss this.

By considering the Categorical Imperative, lying and deception are forbidden under any interpretation and in any circumstance. Does that mean it is morally wrong to deceive a bloodthirsty bear by playing dead in the hope that it won't maul you to death?

Hey, DarkerDark?  You know those links you added to your first post?

You know; those?  They don't work on my computer.  The URL's require "topic=" in them, like this:

Now, art detail.  I say do whatever you want, DarkerDark.  Your stuff is awesome.  Are you convinced that the art style, itself, imposes on your ability to be funny?  You could do more cartoon-like exaggeration with the older art, yes, but those aren't "jokes."  Most of your jokes are comedic reveals hiding behind a spoiler, which are funny if they're funny.  E.g., Emofe hat.

So the only difference would be in whether the delivery is cartoony.  That's up to you.

Fixed. Thanks for pointing that out!

Elves of amanereli, generating avatars since early 2010.

A note though;  the art seems more grim than in the first images.  I think it might benefit from cleaner lines to make it seem slightly more comical.

EDIT: that was rather vague, however the earlier images artwork seems more playful

Yeah, the earlier art was a bit more comical, wasn't it? Maybe that's why I haven't had any good jokes lately. The artwork is too serious. Hmmm...

Sure! Go right ahead!

It seems that this forum game has released another annual update! I can't wait till next year when the Next update will be released :P.

I LOLed, hard.

Yeah, Japan's Skirmish special is OP. They get rocket artillery and a banzai charge that involves tanks. The only main units I'd bring in during that campaign were the half-track mounted infantry. They move really fast on foot, they have RPGs and they're up to their eyeballs in machineguns.

I haven't played any games in quite a while now, but I remember seeing a group notification on Steam saying a patch came out, hmm, last week I think. So just make sure you have the latest version of the game.

Info about the first half of the update ahs just gone up. The second half and the update itself is scheduled for tomorrow.

The engies new wrench is going to be fun for dealing with spies sapping your teleporter entry. Also an infinite ammo gun that saps medics ubercharge/spy cloak will be interesting to see in use.

Pyros new axe is an interesting anti medic weapon as you no longer need to pick whether to hit the medic or his target, not sure if the loss of the one hit kill of the axtinguisher is worth it though. New flamethrower has an interesting effect on being able to slef heal, but loss of airblast means that it's not likely to see much use once the novelty wears off.

Hmm... Not being able to carry buildings is a pretty big negative, in my opinion. I like to move my sentry gun every couple of kills to keep people on their toes. The other engie weapon sounds a lot better, though it still probably won't see much use in my weapon loadout.

And I agree with your assessment about the axe, the axtinguisher will always be superior unless fighting other pyros, but then you'd just use the shotgun. The new flamethrower looks like it was designed to be used with the new shotgun replacement. It's basically a fire extinguisher that gives you crits for every flaming teammate you put out. Actually, it might be interesting to use that with the Degreaser, you know, give it some more killing power.

Oh wait! What if you used that fire extinguishing gun with the new axe? Basically you save up the crits to give to your new axe, providing crits on demand, meaning you can take out a heavy AND his medic in a single go. Heck, you could even use it against other pyros effectively! Hmm... the possibilities.
