DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Fortress layout
« on: May 15, 2015, 03:15:57 pm »
I believe that's still right. Room value is determined by what falls within the designation and you can't designate across z-levels. Which isn't to say that's not a rad and noble pursuit.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Help with Keas!

As fliers they're just gonna be a big hassle to deal with on the surface. If you can set things up so that they're drawn inside they should be slightly less annoying to trap/kill. If you have really active local wildlife it'll probably be a good idea to minimize surface activity anyway.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Tips for beginners?

Starting over is one of the few constants in DF, it's inevitable. Once you have your bearings, getting a fort "up and running" becomes pretty easy so you really have to start making your own fun. It sounds like you still have some milestones to cross, try getting your steel industry going and then maybe construct your first tower, or something.

Figure out what exactly is most appealing about the game to you and then go crazy with it.

Some people like megaprojects, constructions, difficult embark sites, or other artificial constraints. Personally, I have the most fun designing fortresses. My current fort, for example, has three separate mountain peaks linked by enclosed sky bridges, an incredibly lavish memorial hall that leads to my king's mountain top throne room, and underway is a giant magma filled statue that I'm carving out of earth (rather than building).

There's so much to do in this game and my projects are honestly peanuts compared to what some are able to pull off. Keep playing and you;ll find your niche!

[e]the wiki has a great list of common projects. It's a good place to pick something from, or just to browse for ideas: megaprojects

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Horrifying corpses
« on: May 14, 2015, 03:10:20 am »
I hadn't considered that it might be a bug, maybe. It sort of makes sense as is, that seeing a corpse (or pile of corpses at a refuse pile) would be horrifying. I've gotten around it by being more careful where I place my refuse. Magma helps, as it so often does.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Bay12 Census/Survey -- on board tour
« on: May 13, 2015, 09:52:14 pm »
It's a survey, the point is typically to get some idea about a given demographic: who are they? The questions seemed normal to me, in that they were pretty similar to basically every other survey I've ever taken, soo. It's also voluntary.

I didn't even blink at the mental health question because, well, let's be real: it's a survey for people who voluntarily play DF.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Material value vs preferences
« on: May 13, 2015, 09:29:21 pm »
Yeah, the item's actual value is absolutely what's checked, not its "quality". The thought descriptors don't actually match the quality titles, either: "perfectly sublime" for example. As for raw value vs preference, it's been pretty covered. Basically preference increases value, but if they prefer something crappy it may not be enough to matter. When in doubt, make it out of gold is my standard operating procedure.

tldr; dwarfs only care about that $$, material girls

eh, there are so many other things one could be doing though. I sometimes indulge in a trap defense because I'd just rather be worrying about something else.

On topic, I never use pump stacks because my computer can barely handle this game without them. Sadly this means I'm always limited to volcano embarks because I can never go back to non magma workshops. I also never build above ground to the extent that I'd like to.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Relationship
« on: May 11, 2015, 06:11:17 pm »
I am certain that dwarves socialize when training in the military though, since in countless of my forts the paired off dwarves are always friends with each other. I'm not entirely sure if training and working are the same thing here though.

It generally appears like that. My miners are also often friends. It's not because they socialize on the job though, but because they tend to be off work at the same time.

I think the last part is key. For most labors socializing happens only during down time ("on break", "attend party", or "no job"). For military maybe they're able to become closer on the job since it requires them to interact? (sparring, demos, etc)

They don't socialize when working, so it is possible for two dwarfs to spend years right next to each other and not be friends. Though in a fortress that small it does seem odd that they wouldn't eventually meet. I think clashing personalities might also prevent friendships.
