Let me just clear up a few things about attacking armies:
So keep all that in mind when you're fielding units against each other.
- Only one army can attack at a time. Any number of armies can defend. If you want to all attack at once, you must merge your armies into one and attack with that. Otherwise, they will attack one after the other, drastically weakening your offense and most likely wasting every soldier you send into battle. Also, armies will move at the speed of their slowest unit.
- Defending armies get a defense bonus from terrain, as well as the city, as long as it belongs to their country. Forests 25%, Swamps/Hills 50%, Mountains 75%. The maximum defense bonus is 200% with all the city upgrades on a mountain. Siege engines can reduce city defense bonuses, but not natural ones.
- There's a little counter on the bottom right of the movement UI that shows how many squares you can move. You can no longer move when it equals 0 or less. You can move into terrain that costs more than you have left as long as you're still above 0.
- Armies are exponentially more powerful the more units they have over the other army, because it allows them to deal more damage at once, weakening the other army on their next turn.
So keep all that in mind when you're fielding units against each other.
