I'm planning on starting a new fortress and I have no idea what I should actually be looking for in an embark location. Anyone have some good advice?

Just started up my first fort in a few years, and within a year a necromancer showed up with about 20 zombies and just left them outside my gates. Since then I've just been in turtle mode, walling off all entrances and exits while i train up a military. I also don't have access to any iron or steel, so my only option is to make full sets of adamantium equipment and hope they can fight off the zombies.

All in all, I see this as a pretty successful fort. We've only lost a fisherdwarf to the zombie apocalypse so far.

Long-time lurker here. Just wanted to say that this is possibly one of the greatest train wrecks I have ever seen a succession game become without being destroyed. Props to all of you.



Also, when/if the fort becomes functional again, dwarf me as Namlet.
