DF Gameplay Questions / Re: The underground river
« on: March 27, 2007, 12:36:00 pm »
Just keep going to the right, it shouldn't be any further across than a screen and a half (it does vary a bit, because the river zigzags).

Welcome to DF  :D

The hematite is there somewhere... you've just got to look for it. Jaqie is right - digging long vertical lines evey twenty or so spaces is the easiest way to find each seam, and if you dig across to the magma or chasm every so often it lets you look a good distance up and down the edge of the feature to see if any hematite is there - this can save time sometimes

Nah, they aren't worth as much as a decent double engraving... check the wiki

Look at his skillset. Whatever he has as his highest skill, i.e. clothesmaking, weaving, leatherworking, that is usually the workshop he wants. So, if his highest skill is novice clothesmaker, make a clothier's shop, if it is leatherworking, make a leatherworks. Failing that, just build every single workshop you can which you haven't already built. One of them has to be the right one. He'll go to it when you build it.

That actually works? Bridges with walls on was on my freakin wishlist... I'm going to have to restart now. Dammit.

On a couple of occasions now I've hit n while in the right column, then quickly typed in seeds before realising that I hadn't gone to the add items menu... very frustrating, as the e makes you embark

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: New Player Questions
« on: November 25, 2007, 05:56:00 pm »
Hey, welcome to DF! Don't worry about having lots of questions, everyone has them to start, and even the long time players are just getting to grips with the latest version. There are always people happy to help on these forums. Though you should check the wiki if it's a simple question about gameplay, or some of the less friendly people on here will yell at you.

About your questions, I wouldn't rely on the mouse for playing DF. The interface hasn't really been optimised yet due to the alpha state... The developer has decided that the game is likely to change so much that time spent on it would probably be wasted in the long run. Nevertheless, it is still very functional. A major tip that might not be obvious - If you want to scroll faster, on screens like the mining designation screen you can hold down the shift key to jump ten spaces instead of one.

As for quitting without saving, it isn't really recommended but you can exit with ctrl-alt-del and end process. It might mess up your world, but it probably won't. Something else you should definitely do is go to the .init file hidden in the DF folder and turn on seasonal autosaves. If you don't want to risk messing up your game, you can quit and replace your region save with the autosave (the region is the save for the entire world you have generated). Delete the region saves folders contents and then copy and paste the whole contents of the autosave into it.

But definitely turn it on. When DF crashes/goblins slaughter everyone/you irreversibly flood your fortress/everyone starves/fortress caves in/everyone catches fire/(etc.) at 4 in the morning and you've been playing without saving since 10 at night, you want to kill something. Have fun!

I thought standing bridges were indestructible - don't people use them to hold off the demons?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Useful migrants?

Seems that you get migrants with every type of skill now. Personally, my useless immigrants either wrestle with each other or a pump until they can pull their own weight.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dumping stuff
« on: November 19, 2007, 06:38:00 am »
Mmmm, that sucks. I was going to hold out on giving them individual rooms until the tower was halfway finished, but by my nearest estimate I'm going to need a good few thousand pieces of glass for the whole thing... I guess I can put together somewhere temporary for them to store their stuff with the craploads of wood I've got for the moment, it's not doing too much. Thanks for reply

DF Gameplay Questions / Dumping stuff
« on: November 19, 2007, 05:00:00 am »
Okay, I have a few vomit and bloodstained clothes hanging around from a diplomat who had some leaving difficulties... and I want to be rid of them. I've designated a garbage dump activity zone and I've also set the clothes to be dumped (I've not forbidden them or anything) but it seems my dwarves aren't interested in moving them, much to my dismay. They're completely screwing with my major project, an underground reservoir in which will sit a clear glass tower. Ideally, the water won't be full of tattered clothing... so can anyone think of any obvious reason why they might be being ignored?

Just have to hope they don't start getting impossible demands from their fey moods... could cut your population rather dramatically. On the plus side, you won't get any nobles!

Heres an idea - Why not try turning it into a huge fort boyard/survivor kind of thing? Last one left alive wins.

Challenges could run from hauling rocks out into the freezing cold, taking on various precaptured animals in single combat, food/water deprivation, racing lava down a channel - you get the idea  :D

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: I have lost my anvil... Is there no hope?
« on: December 13, 2006, 01:55:00 pm »
The best thing to do is build the metalworkers forge the instant the first metalworker arrives, and lock it in a room. That way, it can't really be lost - it won't vanish, and tantruming dwarves won't smash the thing

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Caravan in the third year?
« on: November 29, 2006, 05:48:00 pm »
I rarely get around to building a road before the second summer (I have better things to do), and I've never had problems with the humans. Maybe thats the problem, having the road built before they show up the first time means they never bring caravans.

Kind of ironic.
