DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How To Farm (versions 0.31.x through 0.42.x)
« on: February 02, 2016, 06:00:46 pm »
Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I've downloaded a mod that significantly increases growing time for all crops and places seasonal restrictions on above ground crops and have 2 questions. Say we have Crop A that can only grow in Spring, Summer and Autumn, and takes 2.5 seasons to grow. My first question is that if I planted Crop A in the Spring and ordered that field "left fallow" that Summer and Autumn, would Crop A continue to grow through those seasons? My second question is that if instead of leaving it fallow I ordered Crop B planted in Autumn, will the farmers wait until Crop A has grown and been harvested to seed that plot?

Not an active save. Do you mean that they would never take their clothes off to get new ones, or that they wouldn't wear clothes at all, appearing on the map naked?

If I add [ARMORLEVEL:1] to all clothing to prevent it from wearing out, will dwarfs still pick up newly created clothing and put it on just because it's more valuable?

Mod Releases / Re: Modest Mod v0.42.04-1a

I want use Modest Mod for 42.06 when it comes out (hopefully should have a better CPU by then), but also want to play with a lot of other raw modifications. Should v0.42.04-1a be compatible with 42.06? I'm thinking of downloading it now and starting to work on those raw modifications.

Life Advice / Re: The Generic Computer Advice Thread
« on: February 02, 2016, 09:27:59 am »
This morning, I was embarrassed to find that one of the CAD lab computers at school ran DF significantly faster and more smoothly than my computer at home. I compared the hardware, and while we're matched in RAM at 8 gigs each, my AMD Phenom II X4 965 appears to be inferior to its Intel Xeon E5430 @ 2.66GHz. At last, I know it is my CPU that is the limiting factor.

I've got an MSI 790GX-G65, so if I'm going to buy a new CPU without buying a new motherboard too it'll have to be AM3+ socket and thus AMD. However, I know that DF performance is reflected by single thread performance, and AMD doesn't seem to do so well with that. In fact they don't seem that good at all.

My school is selling decommissioned computers. Buying a computer identical to the ones in the CAD lab would be $150. It might be  a cheap way to switch over to Intel......what should my next move be?

If you need something different, try a biome that you usually stay the hell away from.

Not knowing about the friend in question, I'd lean towards no, unless she's a Titanic and Frozen fan.
This. Your question is extremely context-sensitive, and you haven't provided any context.

I actually consider a full suit of armor to contain 3 mail shirts and considers breastplates important because let's face it you can live without your limbs but not without your internal organs, but hey, I'm not a guy who buys ores with his embark points to make armor.

I came home, and Tradegray hit 0 FPS. If that's not an FPS death, I don't know what is. I'm sorry lads, but it looks like I'll not be playing DF again until I get a better CPU.

It's not the beard on the outside that counts. It's the beard on the inside.

First thing I thought of when I read the title.

I could scarcely believe my eyes when I saw my axedwarfs having an ARCHERY demonstration of all things. And it wasn't like the 2 new guys were good archers and were showing the the old guys, no. Apparently 2 of my veterans have been Accomplished Archers since forever, and today for the first time (that I've noticed) have decided to have a demonstration of it. At least it appears that the new guys are getting good fast.

Oh, you know, just thinkin' about scholarly pursuits and stuff. Probably thinking about a new idea involving their chosen focus, or writing a book, or talking about his passion with others, or something. Scholars don't do too much as of yet, as mentioned.
Those 3 things are covered under the Ponder X!Write! and Discuss X! jobs. It's not clear what Research! is.

Distance affects MBs for certain. Not sure about FBs, as they have always seemed somewhat random to me. May be that they have been on the map, but weren't announced due to being within an unexplored area of the map, only to be revealed once they have entered a viewable area.
Oh, believe me, it was NOT a case of FBs hiding out in hidden parts of the map, we're talking fully exposed caverns.

Each layer has its own population values, so it may just be on a layer where they would normally reside, but I do not know. I have seen multiple beasts on the same layer, but they could have wandered between layers through natural tunnels that connect layers, or it may have been coincidence.
Have you seen 2 come onto the map in the same cavern in the same season? I haven't, and I'm wondering if it's just a coincidence.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: When to begin working on defense in 42.04?

In all seriousness, I have not had a single long-lived fort where I did not eventually regret something about how I set up the entrance, I've just learned to make smaller mistakes. In my most recent fort, I have realized that if I had only been willing to cheat and use a single bridge-wall, I could've carved out my main staircase in a much better place and protected my citizens and my trade depot better. Of course, hindsight is always 20/20.

*SIGH*

The ride never ends.

Looks like a good candidate for the archers.
The what?

He'll go down quick and poison vapors can be very bad. Most of them aren't, but all it takes is one bad one to kill off a legendary axedwarf or squad after the fighting is all over.
Aw, crap, I'm down 2 axedwarfs. Well mister legendary architect who dreams of becoming a legendary warrior, consider yourself relieved of your scholarly duties. I'm gonna make your dream a reality.

Does the number of goblins killed in a siege effect global goblin population?

Yeah, they are all real, but it doesn't know how to pull from outlying villages yet, so there's a limit on the area of the effect.  Global populations can also increase if there are enough of them, regardless of what you are managing at your fort.
Well, that certainly explains why the sieges always take a turn for the underwhelming after I crush a few big ones. Any plans to remedy that?

Toady, did you go and make cavern creatures hyper-fertile for reasons known only to you?

It's probably related to the bug fix that stopped creatures from requiring a marriage-frame-of-mind before breeding.
You misunderstand me. I wasn't saying that giant olms and giant toads were having babies more often (though that might also be the case), I was saying that among giant olms and giant toads double and triple births are as common as single births.

3 new questions:

A) What exactly is a scholar doing when his job reads"Research!"?

B) My fort hit the wealth and population for FBs a long time ago. I got one, then didn't see any for over a decade. However, for the past 2 years, I've gotten one or two FBs per season, every season (not complaining, for the record). Is my drought and flood of FBs a coincidence that occurred because my embark was very far away from the stomping grounds of all but that first FB, or is there something deeper going on?

C) Related to the above, I've noticed that every time I do get 2 FBs in a single season, they come from different cavern layers. Is this a coincidence, or did you code "a cavern layer may only have a maximum of one FB appear in it per season" in somewhere?
