DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Are my defenses good enough?
« on: August 01, 2016, 05:40:59 am »
assuming everything goes wrong, i built the "moat with walls and lip", "drawbridge for wagon", "drawbridge with line of cagetraps for dorfs" aboveground and "direct path with cagetraps and speartraps" with a longer path for the wagon, both lined with watchdogs and sided by traps again to catch fleeing/panicking enemies and after between the tradedepot and the actual entry, the same constellation again. i'll post screens :D

...with a wall of firesafe stone blocks...
All constructions are fire-safe.

And magma-safe, for that matter. Once something is turned into a wall it becomes indestructible. You can make walls out of ice and soap if you want to.
didn't know that. but nice to know.

my defenses consist of a 8 tiles wide and 2-4 z deep moat (i always plan on building it to not fill, but then the rivers look so tempting :P) with a wall of firesafe stone blocks, an underground "snakepath" for the caravans around the trapped straight path with a drawbridge as a gate.
and a novelty! inbetween the caravanpath and the trappath, there's a dog to scare off sneakers and on the sides opposing the dog, there's a chamber with cagetraps, so they see the dog, run directly away from it into that chamber and get trapped.

started 43 with LNP and used nebulatron's embark profile
ordered trees to be cut down, but nothing happened
thought game fault -> save restart game, but problem still exists
thought corrupt world -> started new world, but problem still exists
i created a few more worlds until i remembered that wooden axes couldn't be used for cutting trees anymore :D

latest version my OS can install is ".net framework 4"
i hope SounCense doesn't use any functions that aren't included in that version yet.

yes, if it's necessary. but if it's made into a mod, this could also just have custom blocks:
-stairwells
-ramps
-doorways
etc.
complete with ceilings/floor and automatically applying to their surroundings, like "glass panes" or "stairs" already do in minecraft.
rough hewn, smooth and engraved versions of all materials.
also you can have custom player and monster models that are just small enough to pass though those blocks.

wouldn't it suffice to randomly have ground blocks checked for if they're any kind of soil and have a 50% chance to spawn grass on them?

i use the priorities quite often and in the LNP it always has them deactivated on startup.

1152
the diagonal travelling can be possible if a "square" is 5x5 blocks with missing corner blocks.

1153
if .net4.5.1 is only available for win7/8/10, it would not work for me either.

1154
thanks for the alternative!
athough i don't know how to compile it, i'll gladly use it.
i too was shocked when reading the EULA from some of the latest updates of those "necesseties".
-skype claims the rights to every idea you communicate through their program
-adobe flash strictly forbids the use on an offline device and sells user data
what's with java/oracle?
if not for minecraft and some tools, i could go without it.

DF Announcements / Re: Dwarf Fortress 0.43.05 Released

If it's only XP era games then the majority of them will work perfectly fine under Wine: https://appdb.winehq.org/ (if they don't just have a Linux version).
some games (from 2003, namely Vietcong) my brother couldn't get to work in wine.
also some other games strictly require directX9 and won't work without it.
i got so many tips for this everywhere - i don't want to hijack this forum for that too :)
