DF General Discussion / Friendly Goblin...Bug or intended?
« on: August 29, 2016, 07:00:50 pm »
I'm playing Fortress Mode and things go as expected, one goblin siege first year, at least 8 goblin thiefs but when i set up my tavern and temple, after a few human poets, bards and soldiers comes a friendly goblin to visit my fortress.

If it is intended, does that mean that i could be allies with the goblins?
In that case can i get a goblin caravan?

Here is a link to the video (the goblin comes at min 16:15) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4JmACudBqU

PD: Ignore my spanish muttering at will xD

Saludos.

I'd be willing to wager that one of the caravaneers was struck by the frozen blood rain, and they bailed.  You should carefully check the combat logs for any 'struck by' declarations.

That's very useful, i will thank you!

Check any trees in the area.  Maybe a pack animal saw a goblin leg stuck in some branches.

It's an evil glacier with no trees, that's why i insist you to refer to the video there is nothing around to hide an undead corpse it's all plain ice.

The most common reason for caravans to get scared is (parts of) dead sentients. If you dump remains of e.g. goblins on the regular refuse pile the caravan will bolt as soon as any caravan member (excluding guards, I think) sees the remains. If that is the case, your dorfs will also get bad thoughts from seeing "x died" when x actually died long ago but the remains are seen. Such a situation should be handled by moving the remains of sentients somewhere where they aren't seen (such as down a hole, incinerated by magma, atom smashed,...). A single tooth is sufficient to generate this scare, by the way.

And I don't think it is retarded to drop your 50 kg backpack if you have to run for your life... The retarded part is to bolt like a horse scared by a fly for nothing.

Evil rain (e.g. goblin blood) will also scare caravans in the same manner.
i'm on an evil biome and most of the dead things revive, and why would the caravan dunedwellers get scared and not my dwarfs , the video that shows there is nothing in the way of the caravan.

Anyways i'm not sure of what is happening neither but there are no unded nearby i know that.

There are no dead bodies nearby and even if they got scared why did they leave EVERYTHING like it's so retarded. And they have guards to fight why no fight the undead instead of runing away and loosing everything.

In fact i can know for sure that there are no unded in that part beacause my dwarfs could get the equipment that they left, withot getting scared.

DF Gameplay Questions / Bug

I can't create a topic in the bug section, don't know how it works so i'm leaving it here.

The game version i have is 0.04024 and it happened while i was making a series in youtube so i have the bug filmed.

Some dunedwellers came to trade with the caravan but instead of coming in the fortress they dropped everything and run away.

For now i will leave a link to the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=be9GdfeZsgk
The bug happens at 14 mins 50 seconds.

If needed i can upload the savefile. I have no mods other than DF hack and Phoebus tileset.

MAGMA!!!!

But seriously, I agree that dropping the wagon and looting the caravans are not really what you should strive for, and neither is walling off map edges and other constructs that exploit technical limitations (size of the map) to ease the burden. However, it will be very difficult to conquer the surface in the first year (or two), which means that it will be tough to let the migrants and traders survive (increasing your zombie problem). I would probably embark with some well trained hammerdorfs and archers and some metal + coal + 1 coke, that should allow you to have a decent military by summer - but a decent military might not be a match against whatever the biome throws at you. You can probably do two miner/smith dwarfs, who will first mine out minimal quarters and then produce arms+armor. The five other dwarfs can be military (or 4/5), and can set up food production while the miners+smiths are busy, after which they take over and the soldiers get training. Maybe you can re-use the map from the "single pick challenge" thread, it would be nice to have a direct comparison of how much easier bringing some stuff on embark makes things.

What you say makes a lot of sense, i remember that i tried it but i failed. Having 4 soldiers made mining too slow and what i usually do to have water on a glacier is to colapse floors of ice into the underground to melt and have water, then build some farms. If i don't have 5 miners i can't accomplish that in time beacause my first wave of inmigrats will consume all my drinks and food quickly and it's very rare to get a miner inmigrant.

With that said i really appreciate your suggestions and if you can make a video response where you manage to pull it off it will be gold for me.

The strategies you ponder here are way more viable than mine,i know for a fact, i've done it. But i see it kind of as an exploit. The caravan that comes every year is a friendly dwarven caravan from your own civilization. The objective of my series is to take over the surface so i can make caravans and inmigrants live and come every year. If you have any suggestions or ideas on "how to kill 7 mammoth zombies without loosing dwarves or having to build a gigantic trap" please leave a reply.

It's true that caravans are not requiered to survive but the objective of the video is "Take over the surface" so if the surface is infested with 300 inmigrant and caravan warrior zombified it's gonna be an imposible task. And the supplies of wood from the caravan are pretty useful!!

Well what you say wouldn't work. You need to take over the surface as soon as possible or the caravans and the inmigrants will start to die and fill your map with zombies. The objective in the video is very clear, is to take over the surface as soon as possible, and if you think that is easy task you can make another video in response i think that would be very intresting i might learn something! :D

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Too easy or too hard, no middle ground
« on: September 06, 2015, 08:10:45 pm »
I love the idea of this game, but this game is either way too easy and boring or way too hard and unforgiving. I started my first place at a noob biome where there aren't that many bad people, just the occasional bad animal or a nercromancer who runs away when my army runs towards him.

So, then I decided to try an evil biome and I can't last more than 5-10 minutes. After the fifteenth try of an evil biome, I could actually survive for 25 minutes. But then my pet cat died and came back as an undead cat and slaughtered every single one of my dwarves. I looked up online and it says that unlike every other game, these undead zombies get buffed with strength and ridiculous speed.

My question is, is there a middle ground? I just built next to two goblin fortresses, I don't know if that would help increase raids in my kingdom or not. What I would like to have happen is maybe struggle with a military loss here and there, have enemies try to raid my kingdom, but not necessarily wipe me out in the first five minutes of playing. I'm all for hard games and I really like this game, but I can't find a good middle right now. :(

Hey i'm making a series about surviving in extreme enviroments i would really appreciate suggestions, ideas, questions so please leave a comment there!

I hope my vids can help you! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCxQIobW18ULFYFdi8VAg8BQ
