For those of you who were interested in gameplay videos, I've just posted a talk-through of getting to know a new character on the Steam Store page (it's the second video in the list):

http://store.steampowered.com/app/396680

Honest feedback required please! does this help sell the game where plain screenshots aren't really cutting it? Or is it just annoying (hard to judge when it's your own voice!)

chat and switch to a pinned person, subsequentely panels open and close that way, but they're not stuck clicking any person shows it proper. here's a step by step movie

https://www.dropbox.com/s/bol787n9e80mmvy/test.mp4?dl=0

Great - thanks - will fix.

oh if you are intrested, clicking 'visit' on people allows you to enter otherwise closed places

I think that's acceptable - if you know someone you should be able to go to their location even if it's closed.

also, is this supposed to happen?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Bunny gave me a mission to dig dirt, but telling that info to her is gonna hurt my reputation with her?

Yes, that's expected. Greyed out opinion changes mean that it'll affect someone else's opinion of you. I'll add a tooltip to make that more obvious.

also a mission expired and I got money and completed message (I might have had the information but couldn't get it to the granpa in time? don't know)

This happens if grandpa found the information out some other way - if he commissioned you to find it, then you get rewarded in any case.

hearing things panel doesn't get updated when people leaves. MISSING STRING is missing, and you can overhead people talking to themselves (but maybe that's intended)

Thanks - wil fix.

sorry if it's annoying I'll stop, I've the kind of superpower of crashing things

tripleclicking on a destination should engage the ship autopilot there

story tab should auto update while chatting so you know when you hit dirty launcdry jackpot

All good suggestions, thanks! It's never annoying and is most helpful! Others here might prefer we use a dedicated forum (such as steam forums) for this kind of detailed discussion though :)

Thanks again
Chris

Awesome :)

... But that's a pretty weird GUI bug on that screenshot? How do you reproduce getting the events panel to display on its own like that?

Ok that release is out for you :) See what you think!

That's a decent idea. What I've done for now is cause the prepping of a ship for launch to take longer and be interruptible. They now prep for 1 in-game hour, and you can chat to them.

These changes (and a trading fix) will be out in release 1.1.1, due later today.

That feature doesn't exist yet - I was musing about the need for it. I've added it to the list for 1.2 :)

Yeah, that's still not quite right. You should be able to message them to ask them to meet, or at least find out where they are again. I'm hoping to further improve on this for 1.2.

@chrismdp do you want to make a balanced game, or one people will enjoy playing? Start with the fun and you can balance it later. Of course, not the conversation to be having AFTER your game has gone on sale. And if I sound obnoxious... I bought the game day one on Steam - never even heard about the Kickstarter - and have played, let's see, 11 hours over the course of that first week or so, seeing my save games get knocked out by incompatible updates and then once I got to play further just hitting a wall of frustration. I am legit pissed off with your game. Not you. You seem lovely.

And it's not just me. I see you did a podcast with Brian Rubin, who is my go to guy to follow for space games, and his YT LP series on Sol Trader made me laugh out loud, for all the wrong reasons.

Yeah, man that was frustrating. And sorry about knocking out the save games - just had to get those early bugs fixed. I've talked at length about how an early access period might have been a better option.

Quote
The USP of the game is the ability to foster and grow relationships. The early conversation system that I played made it pretty trivial to make people like you, though I never pushed much past that level due to the tedious missions.

In 1.1 it will be much more challenging to make people like you, and more missions are definitely coming.

Quote
I was curious whether the NPCs are also making and breaking relationships or are they all set in stone? Or I should say, is it only player interaction that changes NPC relationships to each other? As conversation choices do affect this.

It's dynamic. The NPCs keep their relationships in an ordered list, so you getting to know other people will naturally change how their relationships work with others. Their opinions about each other will also change as they learn new info about each other, which then affects their relationships over time.

That's a nice idea....

I did think about calling people up, or messaging them perhaps, it does make thematic sense. It would change the balance a fair amount though, so I'd need to be careful how I managed it: one of the major design constraints is your physical location.

It's on the list to think through!

Yes: the current version no longer makes you go back to the person that you took a mission from to complete it - they complete automatically.

The new version due mid-August will also make it much easier to find people through your network of contacts, through getting access to people's full friend and business contacts list. You will also be able to ask someone if they have a mutual friend of someone you're looking for.

Hi all

Just to say that version 1.1 with improved conversations and a map is coming out in mid-August: here's the steam announcement:

And a preview video:

No - frontier space doesn't require visas.

You shouldn't need a visa to travel from federation space into frontier space - only to get back in...

Yeah, that's a fair criticism of the dialogue. It's supposed to encourage role-playing and telling your own story, but perhaps it should be more about introductions. There's currently no mechanic to allow a proper introduction from one person to another, I'm mulling on how to include it without compromising the balance of the other gameplay too much. Will have a further think.

Thanks for the feedback LoSboccacc :)
