personally i had to figure out DF with just the wiki and time, i would have loved it to see quick tutorials that explained how to do the simple things like farm and make booze (food and drink being the main cause of fortress death when i first started)

df is such an open ended game that theres a number of different ways to do certain tasks, so even if you know how to do something, you might find a more efficient way of doing it from a tutorial by a more advanced player.

there have recently been some new additions to the game that dont have much information on them, like libraries (something that i cant figure out even with the wiki)

and tutorials can be interesting to watch while your dwarves are busy doing stuff and your just idling.

i would love to see video tutorials from advanced players on how to do some advanced things, df is a game where we all can learn from each other and build upon our experience as a community

Heat does radiate, but in my experience magma can only melt water 1 tile above or to the sides; expect perhaps when pumped in for magma-wall-ice configuration.

If you looked at your magma forges with dfhack, steel jackal, you'd notice their temperature was at 41.9°C. This is also why in scorching biomes you might still get too hot floor when no magma is present on it.

And no, you can't melt ice with steel minecart filled with magma. I tested :(

havent used dfhack since 0.39.X (or was it 0.40.X?) since i cant seem to find dfhack for the latest versions.

also, if heat only radiates one tile then that would mean that walls would protect people from the heat of magma, since only tiles directly adjacent to the magma would be heated

No like a constructed enclosed square made of say, metal walls. Will the heat build up inside if there is magma on all sides?

i dont think thats how heat works, im pretty sure that any tile underground is at a fixed temperature unless fire or magma also occupies the space.
otherwise wouldent a floor over magma heat up and eventully kill the dwarves?
i have a magma forge built over the magma sea so if heat radiates, it cant travel vertically.
though this is something that should be tested. preferably with a vampire (the non blood sucking variety) as to rule out death by starvation or dehydration. werebeasts would heal once a month from any possible "heat damage" and might render the test invalid

raw plump helmets and dwarven wine most of the time.

though whenever possible i embark in a good biome for the sun berries, i rely on what lies beneath for the fun

I don't know what I wool do in that situation.

That moment when you realize that the American election is a choice between darth vader and emperor palpatine.

real world politics, let the flame war begin....
This is actually a surprisingly Dwarf Fortress relevant topic:

everybody knows that you should throw your babies into a pit with spikes shooting out at it with war dogs trying to rip it to pieces but they can only claw at it because they are chained just out of biting range.

theres always overclocking to get a boost of performance.

and heres a thought, what if it was made that the game wouldnt calculate the worlds events in fortress mode? it would probably speed the game up a lot.
and once a year the game would pause for a while, calculate the events of the world, save them, and then things like caravans, sieges, migrants, visitors ect for the next year would all be scripted based on what the yearly calculation says?

but thats just a random, uneducated thought.

To all who have posted to this thread....

If each of you necroed an old thread you started, you could comment on each others necros, and when someone posts in your thread you don't reply in your necro, but theirs!!
In effect laying a necro siege on the forum. No one would know what's going on, as the conversations would be spread among the threads.
When the weight of new threads atomsmashes the last necro, the siege is lifted  :P

you have the twisted mind fit for that of a necromancer

known bug, creatures will not fight.
i had a friendly GCS wandering in a busy hall as all my dwarves passed by it. the spider never once attacked anybody, and none of my dwarves got scared of it and attacked it so i just let it stay there for a while.
eventually i got tired of it breaking my doors (building destroyers do destroy buildings with the glitch i guess) so i caged it and now its in a place where i can use it for a silk farm if the bug ever gets fixed (as of now it wont web anyone)

did you try selling them wood?
it seems that elves value the life of trees higher than that of their own lives.
if you try to sell them wood every time they show up they will eventually send a diplomat to ask you to chop down a smaller amount of trees, and if you go above the limit they set, they will not be happy about it.

This act is never acceptable, and such posts should ideally be Reported as abusive behavior.

Abusive behavior?

abusive can refer to abusing a person with insults and harassment, or it can mean abusing a mechanic of the forums, like commenting bringing a post to the top of the forum.

as for my opinion on the topic, it depends on the forum. ive been on some other game forums where if there is already an existing topic about what you posted, your thread will be locked. but if you comment on the existing topic and its over 2 weeks old that thread will be locked, thus preventing any new conversation on an old topic. and there are no exceptions, theres no "if you bring something meaningful to the topic it will be allowed"
now in the support or fan creations sub forums, necro is allowed.

on bay12 i think that necromancy is ok under certain conditions.
#1: the thread is still relevant to the current DF version and either of the following
#2: if the thread is support and there is no working answer
#3: you have something valid to say that contributes to the topic

if it fits, necro is fine, if it dosnt, well there might be some other exception i missed

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: July 25, 2016, 07:29:35 pm »
so i just breached HFS for the first time with a suicide miner and sealed off the entrance so the clowns couldent get into my fort.
is it normal for your FPS to just die and the game slow down significantly?
i reverted to an earlier save (immediately before i breached hfs) just because i couldent take the lag spewing from beneath

hmm an adventure mode player overwhelmed by fortress mode...
kinda funny since im a fortress player whos overwhelmed by adventure mode.

but i personally think that the best way to play fortress mode is to learn by starting an easy fortress.

i recommend generating a new world with very low natural savagery, low number of cites, low number of beasts, and frequent ores.
generally the opposite of what you want when playing adventure mode.
look for an embark with multiple shallow metals and multiple deep metals, very deep soil, and clay is a bonus, i prefer to embark in a place with it even though ive never used it.
if you find sand on your embark thats great, green glass can be made out of just sand and fuel and can be used for a number of useful things. sand cannot be seen from the embark screen unless you have a certain plugin, i forget what its called though. (it could just be plain df hack)
since your new, just hit embark now, its a good enough start and you will end up better than if you had carefully prepared to embark since your not used to fortress mode.

now heres something from when i was brand new to df and i had no idea about LNP, the fourms, or even the wiki.
there are 3 things that you need to do IMMEDIATELY upon embarking, #1 build a plump helmet farm, #2 build a still, #3 build a craftdwarves workshop.
plump helmets are an adequate food supply for absolutely any fortress ever, most players end up with a situation where they have plump helmets occupying entire Z levels of filled barrels in their fort.
the still makes booze, it turns plump helmets into dwarven wine as well as make plump helmet spawn (the seed) your dwarves need booze to operate, dwarves are mad drunken bastards who work better the drunker they get, and they will only drink water if its life or death, and even then they wait till they are about to die to give in and drink water.
the craftdwarves workshop can be used to make stone or wooden pots, which can hold more stuff than barrels and are lighter. you cant make booze unless you have an empty barrel or pot, and your food will rot if left out in the open, but will stay fine indefinitely if kept inside a barrel or pot.

i also highly recommend that you disable aquifers and set your population cap to something small, like 20 or 30, its a lot more easy to learn if you only have 30 dwarves to mind.
if your using LNP there is an option for both of those

oh, and whatever you do, DO NOT MINE THE BLUE METAL UNLESS YOU ARE PREPARED FOR INSTANT FUN

You're allied with elves and this could cause war with them, so they should probably punish you, not laugh it off.

Especially if it did cause war with elves.

Though yeah, dwarves be psychic.

war with elves isnt a real issue, they are armed and armored with plants. we have steel.

also everybody in every elder scrolls game is psychic too.
HOW DO YOU KNOW I STOLE THIS SILVER RING FROM SOME GUY ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COUNTRY!
