DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Face Palm moments you had
« on: November 04, 2015, 09:21:07 am »
So I have the outpost liason locked up in the dining hall due to wanting to get the fort promoted to a baronny (I have everything required, but my game always glitches out and forces me to lock him up until the caravan leaves). Things are going well, my mayor is sitting in his room conducting a meeting of one...and then suddenly I get the "Diplomat has left unhappy" message. I go wait wat for a moment...

Mayor went into a Strange Mood -_-; NOT THE TIME MAYOR. NOT THE TIME. You better make an awesome warhammer or mace with that silver you have.

Really the safest way is to just roof over the area and build a courtyard statue garden if you're trying to prevent cave adaptation.

I swear chains are bugged lately too. I want to chain up some war dogs near the entrance of the fort to keep an eye out for thieves and they always end up running loose...

Probably also good to check what your standing orders are for corpses and outside refuse too, just in case those are preventing things.

RAVENS. There's 5 of the little bastards camping out near the top of my map refusing to bugger off and let me get other creatures. There were six, but one of the girls landed in a cage trap, so raven eggs for breakfast it is.

Elves bought a Great Horned Owl early on and I am enjoying him immensely since thanks to ModestMod, he is exterminating vermin with a vengeance. Now if only I could get a girl...or a girl Giant Barn Owl. Caught two males awhile back, but not going to turn them loose since they'll probably turn wild and run away.

Glass does give LoS, at least in windows. I had a safe grazing pen set up with Fortifications protected by windows and my animals were freaking out at the zombies roaming around outside.

*patpat*

Digging around looking for metals and the first cavern layer (which for once is avoiding me), and eventually got fed up with trying to find iron that I went and DFhack'd a prospect all...and guess who's on an ironless map! ME =D

Best part is that I'm swimming in flux stone.

So now I have to work out what to make my stuff out of while I wait for caravans to bring me all their iron to melt down and turn into steel. I have access to copper and silver (via tetrahedrite and galena, no "this is silver ore" on this map either) so I'm debating making some silver weapons for my blade-using people...copper is okay but...yeah. Annoyingly I don't have tin either so no bronze armour. I am going to be wary of doing too much with my guys until I can get some actual armour for them @_@

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dwarves not gathering fruit?
« on: November 03, 2015, 05:49:33 pm »
Yeah, you don't need to extend it up. I guess you may need to if you want to gather from like, the very top of the tree? But you usually don't have to bother with that.

I believe that if you don't set I when assigning a squad to a barracks/archery range, they won't do individual stuff in there, only squad stuff. Though it's hard to tell sometimes.
You mean an I in the menu you see when you q over a barracks? If so, they'll still do individual combat drills even when there's only a T there.
Yeah, that one. And huh...maybe you have to turn I and T off :|a I know I got it working once before where they'd only do squad exercises, otherwise they'd do either their normal stuff or wander around with no activity, depending if it was a training month or not.

I just set a Gather Fruit [ i ] zone, and make sure I have someone with plant gathering turned on. Sometimes with various hauling turned off to ensure they actually do the plant gathering. They get around to it in time.

I haven't bothered to modify what they gather yet, I just let them pick up anything on the ground from herbs and shrubs to fallen fruit, along with climbing up into the trees to get stuff from up there. Mostly the only thing I can recommend is make sure you turn all unrelated hauling off on the dwarf so they don't try and do everything EXCEPT plant gather, because for some reason they really don't like to do it...

Not entirely true, you can pick up fallen fruit and use it, but leaves on the ground do seem fairly useless.

Hooooooo boy that cavern is definitely all one cavern and it is insanely huge. And there's a deep magma tube in it that goes even lower than the cavern does! Lost two dwarves to a Giant Cave Spider though, annoyingly, before it ran into a cage trap. Can you use hostile spiders in silk farms, or should I atom smash this bastard?

Also caught a troll. I dunno if I like huge caverns like this because it's got huge peaks rising up in it with steep walls and it's hard to keep track of my dwarves. I might have to do some landscaping.

EDIT: Oh yeah, forgot to mention a freaking wereturtle came along and murdered my legendary farmer before killing 12 of my military dwarves :/ Turned back into a human at which point I sent EVERYONE after him. He paid for his trespassing.

It could be but it's not because of me. I haven't dug down further than where I intended to enter the first cavern. The upper left and upper right sections start at the same level though, so I'm inclined to believe at least the top half is one cavern. The lower right looks like it either starts on the same level or a level or two lower. The highest part I can see of the lower left is three layers down from the top of the upper left.

I'll find out more when I finally bust into it but as I don't have a military yet I'm hesitant to do so right now.

As a side note, I'm also being 'attacked' by groups of three Kobold thieves instead of just the one I normally do. I must be close to a Kobold cave or something. None of them have stuck around after being revealed, but it's interesting.

I swear this cave system is enormous. I've never seen a cavern this big before, both horizontally and vertically.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Zoomed out, that's my whole embark area, plus some black space. You can see that there's parts in the bottom half of the screen I haven't discovered yet. The highest layer is at -11 (one under my crafting sections, so that was close), and the lowest that I've found (and it goes deeper) is at -34. I need to explore more since there's apparently magma in it somewhere that I can't see but the announcements say exists.

This fort is going to be interesting.
