Midi-Chlorian testing was basically outlawed by The Empire; prior to that only people who wanted to become Jedi were tested, plenty of force sensitives who could have become Jedi but chose not to live throughout the Star Wars universe.
But but but... All the jedi start training at a young age. The kids practicing lightsaber deflection are like 5, and I'm assuming that flaining a lightsaber around isn't the first thing they teach you. So 3 year olds are going "mummy, call the jedi and see if i can join up?" It's upto the kids? Surely the jedi would be testing like... EVERYONE. What kid wouldn't want to be a jedi? They get to do whatever they want!
I mean, don't get me wrong, I love star wars. I read the books, ive played the pen and paper rpg, and every video game, ive seen the christmas special and the droids cartoon. Watching the original trilogy for the first time when i was a kid is one of my most cherished memories... But the prequels introduced so many elements that just ruined the whole mythology. It's not just about dodgey science, or sillyness. Star wars has always had its fair share of rule of cool, and hand waving suspect things because it was needed for the greater plot. But so very much of the prequels content just seems to run, as G-Flex has said, completely opposite to what made the original stuff so great and beloved. Sure George mightve mentioned midichlorians in some obscure book noone read in 1977, but the fact that absolutely NOONE remembers it surely is indication enough that its a horrible idea?
I really think that they should have a distinct line between extended universe stuff that considers the prequels canon, and EU that (rightly so) ignores everything that was in those films. Is anyone else really wary of buying any new star wars books or media for fear of mentions of midichlorians or jar jar?
