Update 53:

Caar, the Large Raven  - (Crystalizedmire)
Hopefully, the mages aren't here yet
Peck at hawk#1

Caar Attack Roll: 7=[3]+4
Hawk#1 Defence Roll: 6=[4]+2
[Successful Attack]
Damage (1d6): [3]

You swooped in and viciously pecked at one of the hawks, tearing feathers with a chunk of bloody flesh.

Hawk#1 Attack Roll: 5=[4]+1
Caar Defence Roll: 10=[8]+2
Hawk#2 Attack Roll: 2=[1]+1
Caar Defence Roll: 4=[2]+2
[Failed Attacks]
[White Hawks open for a Counterattack (+2)]

You retreated behind your loyal ravens, leaving them to be torn apart in your place by the hawks.

[Wolf Bird (Luck)]: [3] -Passable-
You heard a howl replying to your call. Wolves will appear in the next turn, though what they will be able to do against flying hawks is left to your imagination.

[Hawk Masters (Luck)]: [6] -Overshoot-
Figures emerged from the forest. Three new hawks of the accursed mages! Curiously, they seemed to be fleeing something? Suddenly one of them disappeared in a puff of blood and feathers as a massive claw swiped it off the face of the earth. Right behind them was a massive beast covered with sigils and chains, a massive collar of steel pending around its neck. It was nearly as tall as a tree and covered with black fur with streak of red, its bloodthirsty gaze looking for preys. Even worse, it was flying, as attested the two green bat-like muscular wings on its back.

Nearby creatures:
- White Hawk Familiar [Hostile]

- Out-of-control Sigiled Chimera [Hostile / Very Dangerous]

Kori, the Elemental Spirit of Ice  - (TricMagic)
... Time moves on, even in this cold pace. My knowledge is outdated, and the wolf has fallen?

Not good, not good at all. I can't hunt under these conditions. And that thing, prideful. It won't stop.. Can't even tell it's power.

The winds continue to blow as she thinks.

"I need allies." she realizes. On her own she's no more than food. Despite once treating other sprites as such to evolve. "I think that big golem is the other, but they don't like me. Then again I've changed since then. The only other option is that risen spirit for protection. Still, I need to hurry."

Switch out of mist form, double-time back to the flower fields to gather information and spread the word. Keep the snow going but add Antarctic Wind to give some more speed. A tailwind behind her rather than a damaging spell is the idea.

Mist Form deactivated
-1MP from Active Snowstorm
-1MP from speed-boost Antarctic Wind

Pondering the new situation, you decided to head for the ice flower field you had rested in some time ago using your Antarctic Wind to give yourself a boost in speed. There you found peaceful creatures of the ice, from magical beasts to spirits of nature. You asked for the state of the affairs between the four beasts.

You learnt disturbing news. The old master of the forest, which was referred as the White Fang, had at first been pushed back by the White Golem. The three remaining challengers then fought and skirmished for a while, and it seemed none could gain the upper hand. That is until the White Fang returned from its short exile, stronger and changed. Rumors in the wind tell the White Fang made a pact with a power of the outside. With this newfound power, the White Fang defeated the three challengers, who then decided to join forces to push back against the Fang.

Now, the forest was split into four unstable territories. The White Fang controlled the northern half of it, with the southern half loosely shared by the three challengers. The area you were in was under the control of the Ice Sword Spirit, whose presence had started to attract wraiths from neighbouring regions.

(As they told you all this, you also learnt that the warrior spirit was called the Ice Sword Spirit, and the last creature was called the Broken Fang from the South.)

Looking for allies: [4] -Good-
Your rallying call didn't fall to deaf ears. Carried by the little sprites, two messages arrived to you. One came from a group of ice spirits whose home was destroyed by the clash between the Challengers and the Fang. The other came from the Ice Sword Spirit. Both wanted to meet you.

Squacks the Carrion Bird - (Devastator)
That's good.  If they don't do things with whatever that weird stuff is, they might be good to bring to the island.  It'll be good to save them.

As for the fight.. I'm fine if my claws regrow, or if I figure out how to fight better in all these branches.  If either of those happens, I should be able to win.

And if neither does, it can't actually move, so I can fly away.  I'm sure the slimes will finish if off if they have to.  Assuming they can damage the tree at all.

Squack at the tree from a distance, until it lands or my claws regrow.  Then dive into the fight!

With the slimes covering the ground, you had no problem manoeuvering under the range of the tree. Unable to hit you, and without the help of its vinelings, you slowly carved it to death with one or two more strikes. And there it was, the reviled power of gold that was changing the world... you rejected it, these wisps of might trying to join the one who defeated their previous master. Unable to find a host, they returned to the world.

Once that was said and done, the Slimes gathered around the dead tree, gorging themselves on its sap. When they had finished draining a section, they slowly ate at the trunk leaving nothing to waste.

Nearby monsters:
-At least two "Tentacle Trees"
> Tree #1 [-25HP] Dead
[HP? MP? STR2 CON4 POW? RES? INT? IND?]
[Some dendritic creature that is, well, a huge and venerable tree with an arsenal of vicious vines at its disposal. Immobile but dangerous nonetheless, it seems to have some close relationship with the bark/vine spawns.]

-No more "bark spawns?" Vinelings
[HP? MP? STR? CON? POW? RES? INT? IND?]
[Creatures of bark and vines with a close relationship with the "tentacle trees". Innately adept at tridimensional movement in the dense and treacherous jungle.]

-A group of coloured slimes
[HP? MP? STR? CON? POW? RES? INT? IND?]
[Slimes, seemingly featureless bar their many individual colours.]

Azarian, the Imbued Thoughtling (Dustan Hache)
Azarian gathered a few more of the healing sticks in his tendrils before going to regroup with Toc, feeling revitalized and eager to learn what the elders of the tribe had to share.

You pocketed a few of these branches with medicinal properties. That could come in handy.
6 healing branches acquired
Branches from the Friwispea brush. Possesses healing properties which can be used during a rest to fully restore your HP. The sap is sticky.

You arrived at the Goblin Village, where fear had turned into fear mixed with awe as Toc told them how you defeated valiantly a two-headed great wolf the size of a boulder (mild exaggeration). Rather than avoid you, they were now gathering around, maybe hoping that they could understand the secret of your strength by gazing at you.

A short time passed, and you were led up a tree, into a hut made of stick and mud surprisingly held together despite the crude work. A wrinkly goblin white like chalk was waiting you, lying on the side with a healing stick stuck up in his behind. So that was how they used it, hmm. He spoke way more articulately than the goblins whose proficiency in the monster tongue was... crude.

"Red thing. Thank you for your help. I am Tacataca the chief. What is your name? Why do you help goblins?"

Nearby Beings:
- Toc the Teal Goblin

Ulkas, the Horned Demon (Sarrak)
Feeling back in his preferred mode of diplomacy (cashing in favors from holders of knowledge), Ulkas smiled.

”I am quite sure we could entertain your conditions in exchange for knowledge and services provided. Perhaps some not immediately, but we would be eager to cultivate our relationship further with time.”

Checking his companion and seeing her almost-content state, Ulkas weighted the benefits of remaining in this place for some hours. While it won’t let him internalize all bits of knowledge, it should give enough time to enhance knowledgebase. That and this medical facility hailing from ancient times could answer if they could improve themselves in some less obvious ways. Evolution was powerful, no doubt. But knowledge held a different yet similar power - to replicate or enhance.

As example, he did not sleep in a long while and did not feel the need to. But was that illusion of powerfulmind, overruling the body, or factual benefit of higher-stage Essence? Astrosa was in some ways less and more useful for measuring the effects, as despite her physical prowess, emotional turmoil sometimes had high and lows.

(And so, in entirely similar vein, my time to improve our chances comes again. I’m not quite certain benefits we could find here, but slips of knowledge reassure me it could aid us in some interesting ways.)

Agree to conditions and negotiate mutually beneficial deal. We do not want to remain here for long, but short stop won’t hurt, assuming Astrosa agrees.

Astrosa passively replied.
(Mm-mm. I can wait a day.)

With her approval, you went on to negotiate favorable agreements with Endorfos. Although with your position and the gratitude they had toward you, these were more listing rewards while clarifying how to maintain a cordial relationship with them than negotiations proper.

"Once again, we thank you for your help. This partnership is bound to be beneficial, for the both of us. You have been registered in Endorfos as special guests, granting you access to our entire medical facilities, as well as the secure research sector. As per our agreement, we ask that you do not disturb the dormant patients under our care. We will provide support to the best of our abilities, so long as they fit with the missions of Endorfos."

In the meantime, the voice had manifested itself a body in the form of a floating egg-shaped being of chrome. At some point they had asked if you would be opposed to a quick health check-up of the two of you, as a way for them to ascertain the physical condition of the inhabitants of the new world. After confirming it wouldn't take long, you accepted.

You had to be put to sleep for a short while. A while too long, as even after being certain of their intentions, your instinct as a demon told you not to enter a state of incapacitation in the presence of others. Fortunately, Astrosa was there to watch over you. Without her nearby, you would never have agreed to this, no matter how much you trusted them. It was, of course, the same for Astrosa.

You slept first. Then came Astrosa. It only took an hour at most, and it was over.
"We thank you for your contribution of valuable data. Patients Ulkas and Astrosa, soul stages six. Your physical condition is excellent, although some more musculature would improve your long-term health mister Ulkas. Your soul condition is interesting to us, it shows signs of adaptation to an ichor-deprived environment, and a stronger soul coherence than your stage would suggest. It is still incomplete, however, but you seem to be undergoing the restructuration process at a healthy pace."

The floating egg blinked cheerfully.
"If you were to be interested, we have selected physical and magical reeducation programs that would help you improve your current abilities. For miss Astrosa, our physical reeducation area should provide an adequate environment to synchronize with your activating Arma: renowned athletes and champions of our time would vouch for it were they present. For mister Ulkas, our magical reeducation area will improve your magical dexterity and mental flexibility. Whichever you choose, we will be sure to provide professional support."

The Endorfos facilities may be used to Train Attributes or relevant Skills.

(Apologies for interrupting you Ulkas. Xatares has finished analyzing another nearby beacon, and would like for us to reactivate this place next. This particular facility will ensure the lasting facility of the budding network against hostile incursions. Of course, you are free to refuse as per the terms of our partnership.)

Eximius Res, the Rusty Ring (Hawk132)
[These rolls... Nakéen, stop giving me your toughest battles.]

[Alrighty then... facing off with an undead giving me Eversor vibes while both me and Prias are at half mana... I don't like my odds here, but 'effing off ain't much of an option considering the circumstances either. But maybe I can still reveal some options or at least pull some shenaniganery...]

Eximius' voice entered Prias' ears, rather vexed, "... I should've kept my mouth shut. I clearly tempted fate with that 'confidence' talk."

Then, the weapon made himself audible to the Challenger, with a resigned sigh, "To the death, I suppose? Or would it be until one of us is no longer able to fight?" he offered, before continuing, "Though if it is a worthy battle that you seek, perhaps you could allow me and my wielder some time to prepare? Previous fights have drained us somewhat... wouldn't it be a shame if we were unable to perform to our utmost?"

Talking ho! Play for time! Use every bit gained to try to replenish our mana reserves and hopefully find some weaknesses or flaws we could exploit. inb4 talking it out is an actual option here

If it comes to blows, general plan is as follows: Begin with a Manaburn Wave - mostly to check if the undead has some magic tricks and to gauge its RES - the fog he's emitting may be just fluff, but I'm suspicious of it.

Then, use Sever/Crush to hopefully rush him down, unless the Challenger's RES turns out to be a -1 (though I doubt it) in which case keep our distance and Mana Wave. Mana Shields to take some of the edge off of any attacks that make it through.

If health gets low, use the healing amulet we got from Veras.

Reserve some mana for a Blink or two (or an Accelerated Flow + Blink) should dying become a possibility. I don't mind playing dirty - getting enough distance to apply the potions we have or to outright leg it to Safara is an option I will unashamedly keep in reserve.

"A living weapon? Interesting. Had I not been out of time, I would have considered your proposal. Even wounded, a warrior is a warrior."

Its eyesockets glinted, and there was violent burst of killing intent. Prias subconsciously activated every abilities at his disposal.

Prias activated Limiter Release (STR +2, CON+2).
Prias activated Accelerated Flow (Medium Advantage +2).

You sensed Prias prepare a Mana Burn Wave- no. Something was different. The mana was condensed extremely within yourself, to such an extent it could not be fired. It formed a thin, incredibly sharp aura of flaming mana extending along your sheen.

Prias brought down this improvised attack on the undead warrior, who failed to dodge in time. The flaming mana slashed where your blade could not, inflicting lasting damage on your opponent. Still staggering under the blow, he was open to another attack.

"Ghh! Outstanding."

Prias struck again, and immediately after created some distance between him and the Undead who had recovered from his stagger. He barely seemed affected by your host incredible assault, though maybe that should have been expected from such an undead.

"Hmm. Your name, brave warrior."

You sensed unlife force and mana gathering around its mace. Prias didn't respond, saving his laboring breath.

T1000 and Sven the Prototype (Day 5: 2nd Opportunity)

I don't really have it in me to do any conversation now so A.
(All good, processing your turn in priority to catch up.)

A - Ask advice to the Supervisor.

Following your suggestion Sven called for the Supervisor, Yoshida. A man of mature age with sparse traces of grey hair arrived within the next quarter. He wore square glasses with a chrome frame, and sported a black goatee.

"Hello Sven. It is rather unusual for you to call me outside of your daily check-ups. Is there something I can help you with?"

"Hello Supervisor. I require your assistance to understand the concept of love."

"Oh, I didn't think you would take this subject to heart. Colour me pleasantly surprised."

He drew a pen from his chest pocket and started taking notes on a small notebook. Sven started recounting the past hours of self-study, mentioning your helpful assistance in that matter. He finally ended with a question.

"Supervisor, is there something about my condition that makes me lacking?"

"Don't worry Sven. You aren't lacking in any way, you are perfectly healthy and curious to boot. That's a good thing at your age. But, ah, knowing you that won't suffice for an answer won't it? How about this then. Attraction is derived from a fizzy cocktail of chemical reactions in your brain, based on criteria that vary from person to person. Your brain is perfectly able to produce that fizzy cocktail, the machinery is all working in order see?"

He took from a large folder MRI scans and EEGs of Sven's brain. It was indeed normal, save for the blatant biochip in his left hemisphere. Sven's eyes focused on that chip, which Yoshida noticed.

"And of course, your biochip is working in tip top shape. Science has progressed a lot, you know how commonplace they are becoming right? Even I had one implanted before I met my wife! I still got a little bald spot from the surgery. Nowadays they don't even leave a scar, crazy hmm?"

"Supervisor. What if... nevermind. How did you meet your wife?"

Sven stopped himself short of asking "what if my biochip was removed", but didn't dare to. He instead changed the subject and found a way to gather some real life account for a change. Two birds in one stone.

(...)

Having some work to do still, the Supervisor left after recounting his love story, which dated from before the spread of the Matchmaker system. He was then just a student in AI and neuroscience, and his wife was a teacher. A fairly standard, if still interesting story.

Sven pondered his nature, a bit in a crisis of identity. He wanted to understand more, understand himself and his limits.

Regarding Sven's brain implant, it allowed him to interface with technology. If it had any other purpose, that purpose was hidden.

Suggestions:

A - Search for a way to remove the chip.
Acceptance: 100%
Outcome: Sven will focus on that subject before thinking about love.

B - Stop thinking about the chip, and focus on exploring new ways of understanding love.
Acceptance: 100%
Outcome: any of the previous opportunities may be selected. Or something else.

Update 22

Beep Boop and Mason the Old Vet (Day 5: 2nd Opportunity)

E

"What's missing is that you haven't given him a chance. Think about it, your fondest memories, they weren't formed while you were alone. So have a talk. You can be as honest as you like."
Beep Boop allows its holographic visage to slip slightly, its smooth blue form glitching around the edges into bizarre iconography. This appears more more like an honest headfriend, and besides being a more suitable facade, it starts to feel more like Beep Boop's true form. Love isn't always good or always bad. If Beep Boop's mission should bring it to spark bad love, why not be a demon?

E - Have a honest to goodness talk with Karl.
Acceptance Roll (vs 6): [7]
B - Go along for the mission.
Default

(Fuck. I'm starting to hallucinate my conscience again. Gaaah, okay.)

Mason raised his arms to show he was giving up.
"You win this round, voice in my head. Okay boy, come with me to the sparring ground."

Karl was surprised. He knew enough about Mason to understand that it meant the grumpy veteran was open to talk. He wasn't going to give up on this one in a thousand chance, and quickly tapped something on a tablet.
"I have reserved a slot in room E2. Let's go"

(...)

Karl was kneeling on the ground, a bit bruised despite the protective gear.
"9 to 2, come on! You can do better you wuss! You are not yet at retirement age, come on!"
"Look who is talking. Pfuh. Ready for round 12."

They exchanged a few blows and feints, and this time Karl managed to land a clean hit on Mason, following up with a hold. Mason tapped, earning Karl the round.
"3 to 9. I still got a way to go. Care about a break?"
"Sure, I was getting thirsty" groaned Mason.

The two men were sitting on a bench, each drinking from a thermos.
"You called me here. I'm all ears, Mason."

Mason gulped audibly, maybe on purpose. And exaggeratedly sighed and stretched like a big cat.
"Grmm. I won't apologise about last time, but it's not because I don't like you boy, or the other younguns. It's, you know. Maybe I'm getting old. My head isn't always were it should be, and I miss the good old times. And there is something else, but, bleh. I don't know. Hey, I was wondering. You lasted longer than I expected, what do you see in me anyway?"

"Well, you got the skills as I told you already. And as a leader, I have a responsibility to care about my squad too."

"Nah you don't get it boy. Not as a leader. As you, the boy. See, that's the thing. Back then, we made no difference between... no that's not it. Being a mercenary, a soldier, a dog... it wasn't just a job. It was a way of life, our true self."

His face seemed to light up.
"Fuck that's it. THAT'S IT. For you, it's just a job. For me, it's my life."

Karl clasped his hands together, thinking.
"That's a job for me, yes. I really like that job, it gives me a sense of purpose. But if there was another, better way, I guess I wouldn't be opposed to trying it out. Still, does that make us so incompatible?"

"It doesn't", thought Mason somewhere in a sane corner of his mind. He partially knew he was the one forcing that incompatibility on them.
"You still haven't really answered my question."

"Don't be offended then. You seemed lonely to me when we first met. Still does."

Mason violently stood up, shouting.
"What are you on about? Lonely me? Bah! I don't need anyone!"

There was a short, heavy blank as both men stared at each other. Mason sat back down with all his weight, causing the bench to shake. He was now looking in the direction opposite to Karl.
"Fucking pussy. I regret asking" he muttered. It was unclear who he was referring to.

"You are a softie boy. It will get you killed sooner or later. Not that I care. But, well. I guess I can put in some more work until you croak. I will try to. Don't take it to heart. Okay?"

"That means a lot. Thanks Mason, if you have our back, I'm not worried."

Mason turned toward Karl, a barely perceptible hint of softness on his wrinkly face.
"Don't haunt me over that if you die though."

(...)

Later on, Squad H was deployed in the western wharf, docks DA-1 to DA-8. They were the spear of the operation, with a few other squads supporting them.

It all went without a hitch, especially since Mason was very cooperative for once.

[Heather: Sorry for the chitchat leader, but what happened to Mason? He is being... incredibly cooperative to a point it's scary.]

[Mason: Oh that's why I hate kids! Always gossiping! And you got three targets 30° 50m from your position Heather!]

[Heather: Copy.]

[Dan: For real, is that really Mason? ]

[Mason: Leader! I'm already regretting everything! Get a leash on your dogs, damn it!]

Mason couldn't help smiling as he trash-talked his squadmates.

[Suzanne: Suzanne speaking. I have located the Helios hideout in DA-4. Awaiting further orders.]

[Karl: Great job Suzanne. If we wait for the other squads, some Helios members may escape. But we would be taking extra risk by rushing in, what are your thoughts everyone?]

AXIUS and Janus the Monster Secretary (Day 5: 2nd Opportunity)

Going to go with option B here.

B - Accept the hug, and cry.
A - Attempt to track Abigail's location to attempt contact
Success roll (vs 0): [10]

Swept by the teary mood, Janus exceptionally let himself get embraced and comforted. It was a friendly, reassuring embrace. Shino patted his head which did surprise him a bit, saying "There, there" while still sobbing a bit.

"Hrm hey. Didn't we agree I'm not a child?"
"Sorry, force of habit.".
"Sheesh. Haha. I will let that pass."

Janus let the tears out into warm streams, but he did not embrace Shino back. He still had some pride left, after all. They stayed like this for a while, until Shino let go.
"That went well?".
"It did. Thanks for the push. I feel a lot better now. Oh and you should probably wash your face a bit, just saying."
"Oh right... I will do that. That goes for you too."
"I will do it later. I would like to keep looking miserable for a little bit."

Shino nodded, and excused herself.

(...)

Later on, David recontacted Janus to cooperate on finding Abigail's whereabouts. Using the full might and connections of the Arwell Group, they managed to trace her location: a remote mansion on a domain belonging to the infamous Teanossa family. They were unable to find any information about this mansion: who lived there, or if it was even in use.

Relationship updated:
+Shino and Janus now view themselves in a romantic light.

Suggestions:

A - Try to gather information about that place.
Acceptance: 100%
Success chance: 80% (0% + 30% (Intellect) + 50% (Arwell Group Support))
Success: will learn more about that mansion and its current owner.
Failure: won't learn anything.

B - Contact the Teanossa family, at least what remains of it.
Acceptance: 100%
Success chance: 70% (30% (Base) + 40% (Speech+Charisma))
Success: will learn more about that mansion and its current owner. The Teanossa will be involved.
Failure: won't learn anything. The Teanossa will be involved.

C - Head there without preparations.
Acceptance: Default Option
Outcome: it will be dangerous. Someone will get hurt, or even die.

Soulbinder and Helena the Clone Heiress (Day 5: 2nd Opportunity)

”Lady Teanossa. If I may make a suggestion, we could potentially reach out to Teren or other parties that might have connections. We should be careful who we contact, as the activity being detected definitely indicate a person with many strong allies or connections available. It may not be possible to maintain secure communications during this time as a direct result, and extra care should be taken before we make our next move”.
Convince her to seek help outside the major powers, albeit with warning as to the ramifications. have her avoid contacting the current pairing target or their family for safety and security reasons.

D - Contact allies (Teren R.), that do not involve major powers.
A - Continue the investigation. 2nd attempt.
Parties involved: Teren R, minor powers.
Success Chance (vs 5): [5] -Success-
++Stress
++Confidence

Following your suggestion, Helena reached out to Teren R, sending him an encrypted message.

Quote from: Encrypted message from Helena
Sir Terren, this is a personal, selfish request of mine. I am looking for what I believe is the true culprit behind the abhorrent bombing that targeted my family.

I would be in your debt if you would lend me your assistance. Not as a Teanossa, but as Helena.

She received a reply in the next five minutes. It simply said "Tell me how can I help". She felt relieved, and set to work with renewed energy and confidence. She sent a few more of such messages to her scarce allies she hoped she could count on.

(...)

Was it because of her night of rest? Because of the new evidence that appeared over night? Of the help she received from Teren and the few allies who responded positively? Everything seemed to unveil, unwrap much more easily, so much so it was scarying her a bit. Maybe it was also because the one behind it allowed it, that wouldn't be impossible.

Knots after knots came undone. With each step, Helena came closer to that person, to the culprit. With each uncontestable evidence, each doubt became clearer, sharper. Like needles slowly penetrating her heart. And then all doubts became facts. Facts she hoped had remained conjectures.

Devastated. She was trembling, was her heartbeat irregular, or was it her imagination? Suffocating. She wanted to cry and laugh, she wanted to reject this reality. To wake up.

"It- it's her."

A tear pearled down her face. She nearly chocked on that name.

"Helene."

It was all over. She had failed. Everything she had worked toward, even if she had to walk a path of thorns, for naught. She felt about to break. Her head was spinning, her legs felt weak.

She took a deep breath, and lurched over a bed. There, she started talking to herself.

"What are you planning Helene?... Revenge? Was separating me from Wilfrid also her plan? What should I do Wilfrid..."

She closed her eyes. Trying to focus, to recollect her thoughts in disarray.

"Duty... and pride."

She looked at you, silently asking for your advice.

Update 52:

Caar, the Large Raven  - (Crystalizedmire)
Use my Wolf bird ability to summon a bunch of wolves to distract the hawks at worst and at best kill the hawks.

(I have updated the effects of your traits and skills, you may want to have a look!)

[Wolf Bird (Luck)]: [2]
You let out a magical call, any wolf in your immediate surroundings should be able to hear. None showed up for now. The flock of ravens that was always following you formed a protective cloud around you, hopefully hiding you from the White Hawks.

Hawk#2 Attack Roll: 5=[4]+1

For now you managed to evade the attacks thanks to the noble sacrifice of the lesser ravens, who were ruthlessly plucked one by one.

Eximius Res, the Rusty Ring (Hawk132)
"... Not a good time for a surprise like this," the ring remarked with a mental grimace. With depleted mana reserves, a protracted battle is not a very welcoming notion, "Let's follow the tracks and hope we see it before it sees us, catch it off-guard or when it's distracted - it seems to like going after the critters."

Oh boy, not looking forwards to this. Can't really lay a trap since we're behind it and we've no idea what it's capable of aside from likely being quite strong and possibly fast. Best case scenario, as far as I can tell, is hopefully taking it by surprise and getting a sneak attack in.

So for now, a quiet, stealthy approach and trying to look for an opportunity to engage on favorable terms.

[The keywords: 'intelligent undead', 'brutal kills with a blunt object', 'issued you a challenge' - all remind me of Eversor, so honestly, kinda scared over here.]

Sneak:
Bonus: Deadland Survivor (+2)
[Very Hard 16]: [1] -Critical Failure-

With growing unease, you continued following the traces left by the "challenger". As you got closer, the two of you recognized the place where you were led to: a mound of earth not big enough to be called a hill, but high enough to overlook the barren lands around. There was no wind, and the greyed skies seemed brighter than usual. Where even they conspiring against you?

You reached the given place. A figure was standing upright at the top of the mound, waiting. When Prias arrived at the base of the mound, it slowly started advancing you.

Approximatively four heads higher than Prias, it appeared to be a towering armour wielding a colossal mace as tall as itself. The metal had a rotten appearance, as if undeath itself had managed to seep into it, and large sections even had a semi-organic look to them. The eerie face helmet resembled an articulate skeletal face with razor sharp teeth, and one could not miss the vicious purple glint in these empty eyesockets. The entire being exuded of unlife force, taking the shape of a low purple fog that slowly flowed and dissipated down the ground.

It spoke. Its voice deep and resonating, with trace of metallic echoes.
"Finally. How long has it been since the last warrior? I thought for sure this time, my mind would erode. Very well."

It entered a battle-stance, causing the purple fog to expand from its feet in a wide radius.

[Hawk-eyed] [2] -Failure-
This battle stance was unknown to you, and neither you or Prias could see any opening in it.

Prias drew you with resolve, and fear, and desire to live. He sensed that if he failed here, he would die. He exhaled to calm his beating heart.
"Can a battle not be avoided?"

"A foolish question that deserves no answer."

Squacks the Carrion Bird - (Devastator)
Well, the slimes don't seem super-powerful, so that's good.  But if I kill the tree now, they're gonna eat the essence and level up.  I'd better talk with them and find out what's going on.  Plus my claws might grow back.

Activate Spell Resistance.  The tree isn't magic, but the slimes might be, and they might attack.

Land, and start talking with the slimes.

"Stay away from the tree.  It's mine, and I'm going to kill it."

[Spell Resistance] -4MP
Resistance temporarily increased by 2 against Intermediate or lower Spells.

You landed near the Slimes, engaging in conversation with them. They seemed to convene for a bit, then a red slime bigger than the others answered.
"After tree dead, you leave carcass to us. Agree then."

It seemed that if they avoid needlessly putting themselves in danger, they were fine with you taking the kill. Maybe they weren't aware of Essence, or even able to absorb it. You weren't keen on taking that risk, though.

Evolve!

You changed, again.

Smarter, and hungrier. More powerful. Focus, qwell the hunger. For now. Strong feelings, desires... closer to a greater state. Exhilarating.

Good thing Toc had left as you instructed him. Your twitching gaze would have likely have terrified him, regardless of your true intentions. Now calmer, you catched up afterward, unless you had unfinished business here.

Ulkas, the Horned Demon (Sarrak)
Ulkas chucked a bit at Astrosa humor. As a demon, he found it perfectly morbid for the situation, but could see where the difference with Liel worldview lied. Both himself and Astrosa did not care, not truly, about persons from ancient past. He did crave knowledge, indeed, and they both strived for power, but to feel pity or remorse? The closest emotion he felt was respect - and it only applied to those he engaged in conversation with. Strangely, that did not include the Last. Unnerving.

”We are indeed not desperate. But I do find your comment funny, it might indeed be either cultural or learned thing. Not like either you, Liel, or Xatares had to evolve by killing others. Anyway, can you make sure that restart of facility won’t require more Essence, thus trying to kill the remaining inhabitants?”

Make sure we don’t accidentally flush ancient efforts into drain by being too hasty with awakening.

Liel was quite surprised by you showing concern, in a good way of course.
"Thank you for your concern. It is a valid worry, but there should be no risk of accidentally draining the survivors. "Essence" levels have reached acceptable levels for the facility to run on ambient "Essence". At worse, it could cause the surrounding lands to be drained, but that's not our immediate priority. I will still run a system check and ask for Xatares advice.

Astrosa was boredly poking at some broken machinery.
"Heh. I can't wait for your to meet our kins from Neodaemonium. How I long to see their agonized faces, hehehe..."

Liel didn't respond, either because she was too busy, or she realized Astrosa wasn't really expecting an answer.
"System check completed. Endorfos will reactivate without compromising the security of the individuals under its care. However, the drain effect on the surrounding land will have a noticeable effect, but that's not our priority."

With everything confirmed, you manually activated Endorfos. You sensed a beat of the soul, of an individual awakening from a very deep slumber. Machinery started to hum, lights flickered on and off, until they settled. A voice spoke to your mind, it had a calm, reassuring tone appropriate to some clerk in the medical field.

"My gratitude for restoring Endorfos. Affiliates of Ichor Extraction Facility Xatares, assisted by Monica-class Liel: Ulkas, Astrosa. I have been given a general outlook of your partnership from the situation report submitted by Monica-class Liel. As thanks, I would be honored to offer you a partnership and put the facilities of Endorfos at your disposal, under certain conditions that we can negotiate on."

Soulbinder and Helena the Clone Heiress (Day 5: 1st Opportunity)

”I am inclined to request that you take a small break, as your body is exhibiting signs of accumulated stress, and it will negatively impact both your love life and your attempts to investigate the events. Your mental wellbeing is more important to me than internal issues with your family and their company.” Soulbinder said, straightening out his avatar’s attire slightly. it was the first time that they had done any form of animation beyond walking to keep within her line of sight in a unobstructing fashion when he had been called upon.
Option B: rest and destress.
B - Take a break.
Stress reduced by 1

"I guess I should. A short break then, I will resume later."

So said Helena, who went to lay down in the bed of a nearby bedroom. Exhausted as she was, what should have been a nap turned into a complete night sleep. It seems she had a dream that night, a recurrent dream. A girl without a name stuck in a cage of glass, filled with a translucent liquid. Maybe because of the dream, the girl could breath alright despite being submerged. Faceless shadows passed before her, none of them reacting to her silent cries for help. Then another her, a vivid reflection. Still pure in her ignorance, looking at her gave the girl solace. Solace...

"Ridiculous." She muttered as she woke up.

Helena looked at the time, sighing with disappointment about herself. Such a display of weakness in times as grave as those... The attendant prohibition she had demanded was still active, and so she freshened up herself alone. She was deep in thoughts, partly over the dream, partly over the current situation. Based on reports from the City Security Force, and those of the Teanossa security, some progress had been done since last night. Helios terrorists were apprehended, and an operation on one of their hideouts was scheduled for today. All this was, of course, highly confidential and "borrowed".

She continued accessing and studying confidential reports. To her it was not even tantamount to work, like someone would read a newspaper in the morning. The situation was worsening, whoever pulling the strings being intent on destroying the current order. Emboldened by Helios' action and maybe supported by hidden actors, groups hostile to the City who had until then been inactive had started moving. The CSF was on the highest level of alert, and had started to go on the offensive. Still, odds were not in their favor so far.

"I have a duty to accomplish. Wilfrid you fool, at such a time, I could really have used your support you know? Ha..."

A dilemma. To ask for help, or not? Her pride and cautious nature told her not to, but some assistance could help her uncover the mystery of the bombing before it was too late. Pride, or duty.

AXIUS and Janus the Monster Secretary (Day 5: 1st Opportunity)

I'll just do the default this time.

B - Contact David Arwell

Janus grabbed a phone and sat. He had the fierce aura of a negotiator right now.

"Hey dad, it's me."

"Janus I-"

"Sorry to interrupt you, I can't have you steal my thunder. Let's talk dad. Oh, and activate your camera, I want to see your face, and I want you to see mine."

Only visible through Janus glasses, an image of David had been reconstructed through augmented reality. The man looked exhausted, and his eyes were still a bit reddened from crying.

"Heh look at us! Pitiful isn't it? What are we, children? Hey dad. Tell me everything, I will listen. Oh and no apologies, okay?"

"Pulling my leg are you? Fine you stubborn son. I will try. I will try..."

David took a deep inspiration. He started clutching at an old emblem of a stylized bleeding bull head.

"David the Ironfist of the Ironblooded Minotaurs. That was me when I was a merc, from the Gariavia civil war to the Crisis of the Badlands. At first I was just in for the money no matter the job, but I ended up growing a conscience. After the civil war, we transitioned to escort missions of humanitarian convoys, and other more ethical missions. Our last mission was one of such escort missions. It was before the 3rd Conflict of the North."

His already somber visage darkened. He gathered his hands, as if praying.
"The pay was good. Too good. I should have seen it coming, but I messed up. Experimental chemical weapons were hidden among the convoy, and we unknowingly transported them through neutral territory. Later, I would realize it was all a setup to start the war. A false flag. Son. To me, I killed all the victims of Linder Vale. Their blood is on my hands. I still have nightmares about it."

Janus kept listening. He was stoic, but that could have been a front to maintain his composure.
"I found you under your mother's charred corpse, clutching at you. A miracle. So I took you in, thinking maybe it could help me atone. I founded Arwell with all my dirty money, tried to give a new life to those who lost everything to the war. The war I caused. Such an hypocrite."

Janus closed his eyes, collecting his thoughts. A lot of strong emotions were flaring right now, confusing him. He wanted to reassure his father, but part of him did hold it against him, as irrational as it seemed even to himself.
"What I am going to say may hurt you, dad. But I want you to listen without interrupting me. I hate that you waited so long to tell me this, your own son and Arwell executive. I'm no longer the boy you found in Linder Vale. I can hate, love, criticize all I want. I also hate that you are the indirect source of my trauma. I have nightmares too, you know. I was old enough to remember my mother, my father. My brother. The stench of burning flesh-"

He felt like puking. David seemed about to say something, but Janus raised his hand to tell him not to. He was sweating heavily, and Shino had placed a glass of water before him.
"I'm okay. Thanks. What I want to say, dad, is that we both have our problems. Our traumas. Our fates our bound, you caused it. All the reason to work together to fight against them, don't you think? Hey dad. Damn it, are you crying? Stop you damn- shit now my eyes are... blurry. Fuck. I love you dad, always did. I want us to fight together. Let's find Abi, and clear things up. Okay?"

Thick tears were streaming down David's cheeks, gathering in his short black beard. He managed to articulate a few words in-between the sobs.
"Okay son. I love you too."

They ended the call shortly after, promising to keep in contact to coordinate. Janus was still trying to hold back the tears, maybe to avoid losing face before someone else. He looked at Shino, who was sobbing in empathy without holding back.

"Operation successful. Haha."

Sobbing, Shino opened her arms for a hug.
"Tell me if *snif* this isn't appropriate."

Janus looked at the welcoming arms. He knew that if he let himself be hugged, the dam in his eyes would burst open.

Suggestions:

A - Attempt to track Abigail's location to attempt contact
Acceptance: Default Option
Success chance: 60% (-20% + 30% (Intellect) + 50% (Arwell Group Support))
Success: +Confidence, will attract dangerous attention
Failure: -Confidence, will make further attempts easier

B - Accept the hug, and cry.
Acceptance: 100%
Outcome: relationship with Shino starts developing into something romantic.

(Treating Sarrak in priority to have them catch up)

Ulkas, the Horned Demon (Sarrak)
Statis vaults? Interesting, doubly so with Xatares comment which implied that medical facility - which should have been specialized - fared worse than Sateris. Thought for later, perhaps, for Ulkas still felt some measure of unreality remaining within his mindscape from their recent visit to Sateris Zeos.

While medical facility won’t be useful in their current state, having fallback option could be vital later on. That and discovering more puzzle pieces of ancient knowledge to supplement his own.

”I’m glad to hear you appreciate~ Just as I have alluded to before, information warfare and diplomacy are powerful tools in their own right. Let me try to discover some more before we move on.”

”Well, Liel, ready to check if previous experience would let us deal better with current defenses? While medical facility should not be more problematic than Sateris, being throughout is important.”

Try to restore Endorfos. Disabling kill-switch first and checking for other good stuff later.

[Disabling the kill-switch (INT)]
Attribute: INT 7
Traits: Expansive Mind (+1)
Skill: Advanced Mind Field (+2)
Other: Previous facility hacking experience (+1) Liel Support (+2)
Difficulty [Easy]: 7
Roll: [6]+6=12
Outcome: [3] -Success-

All in a day's work. Although unbelievably complex to common minds, this facility's security system lacked the complexity and dangerosity of the one you experienced back in Sateris. That must have been the difference between a high security installation and a partly civilian one in a state of terrible disrepair.

The lock disabled, you felt something unlocking. The gates before you didn't bulge, at least until Astrosa forcibly pryed them open with her monstrous strength.

"Power is running through the facility, but most of the systems are inactive. Apart from the core, that is. It should have started waking up, hence the distress signal."

You cautiously passed the open gate, entering into a vast, multi-level cylindrical room lined with closed cavities for some sort of pods. It reminded you a bit of some beehive. Some of the pods seemed to emit some light, but most of them were dark. You spotted a terminal, and now used to it you placed Liel on it.

"The Core room is ahead. Endorfos has not responded to contact attempts, we may have to manually activate it. Ah..."

Liel let out a pained cry.
"Pod failure rate... 97%. I have to... inform Xatares."

Out of curiosity, you accessed the logs. From what you could understand, these stasis pods held individuals of the past, people of Levem proper. Their body and soul were put in stasis, protecting their minds from degeneration. And it went on for a long, very long while. Then the emergency power system failed, as similarly to other facilities, relied on the ambient Essence concentration. So to preserve some of the dormant individuals, some stasis pods were used as emergency... batteries. It made sense, as living beings, they held Essence too.

Something caught your attention in the logs. They research Ichor here, that is, Essence. Its effects and applications, grand subjects such as the theory of Soul Manipulation, or the means of Resurrection and many more. A vast pool of knowledge prime for the taking, that would surely lead you to new heights if you could understand them.

"That's kinda pitiful. To die like that. And the survivors are so vulnerable, like fruits waiting to be plucked..."

"Xatares would... I would not allow that."

"Sorry, was that in bad taste? It's okay, even I have standards. Getting stronger like this would leave me with an horrible taste anyway, and I'm not as desperate as before. Right Ulkas?"

"Yes that... was in bad taste. Our cultural sense of humor still differ too greatly, it would seem."

Still bickering a bit, you moved further until you reached the Core. Like Xatares, it was a mix of machine and soul. An artificial creation infused with great intelligence. All that remained to restore it, was to pull a metaphorical lever. You only had to place Liel on the terminal next to the Core.

Beep Boop and Mason the Old Vet (Day 5: 1st Opportunity)

Connections with the Teanosa family.
Conflict. Crisis. Those are the elements which can push my host, to grow and change.

Enough data gathering. Assign pairing slot x5 to Mason M. and Wilfred S.

Pairing Slots 1 to 5 allocated to Mason x Wilfrid

Quote from: Incoming transmission...
From: OTP Cabal

You do not disappoint, Matchmaker Beep Boop.
1 InfoCredit has been transferred to your account.
In addition, we have worked out with CUPID to allow a data leak regarding Wilfrid S, which is necessary to push your pairing forward.

We look forward to its completion.

Mission "Identify your ideal pairing." Completed!
Main Objective Reward: 1 InfoCredit

C - Forget about it and call it a day.

As quick as he started self-reflecting, Mason forgot all about it.
"Meh. Why the hang-up?"

He just went on to the usual business, maintaining his gear, practising his various combat skills. In-between the usual, he took a quick nap. And he had one quite vivid dream of days gone past, of roaming the dusty badlands with the Minotaurs. Hell the fun they had! The fun they had... Mason woke up in a daze.

"God I miss them assholes. No way they are dead. No way they are..."

He blankly stared at the ceiling of his bunk room. And blankly stared the rest of the day too, as if still stuck in that dream. They had a meeting with Squad H, and they said some things about Helios, a mission, or whatnot. Mason wasn't really listening. But to you who were listening, they would be deployed next day to root out a Helios cell operating in the wharf, according to the extracted testimony of the captured terrorists.

When the other squad members had left the meeting room, only Karl and Mason were left.
"I'm counting on you Mason."

"What a coincidence, I'm counting on myself too."

Karl sighed.
"Very funny. Mason, I am sincere when I tell you I hope you can become part of the squad. You have the skills to back your words, and despite your eccentricities nearly costing us some missions, you have mostly cooperated with us. I believe in your potential, I ask only that you trust in us. Can you?"

Mason made one of the nastiest frown known to man. He didn't dislike Squad H, but... to be fair he didn't really know why he was so cranky and uncooperative these days. It wasn't worth worrying about. Still, he didn't dislike his current situation. But there was... something lacking? Mason hadn't thought much about it. Or maybe he had and forgot.

Suggestion:

A - Leak to Mason the whereabouts of Wilfrid S. [CUPID authorized leak]
Outcome: Mason will try to find Wilfrid.

B - Go along for the mission.
Acceptance: Default Option
Outcome: will provide opportunities to fight Helios and increase opinion with Squad H.

C - Find an excuse to not participate in the mission.

Success Chance: 10% (50% (Base) -10% (-30% (Stress))
Success: will provide opportunities to do something else.

D - Sneak out.
Acceptance: 40% (60% (Base) -20% (Trust))
Success Chance: 40% (60% (Base) +10% (Stealth) -30% (Stress))
Success: -Opinion with Squad H. Will provide opportunities to do something else.
Failure: -Opinion with Squad H. Default Option locked.

E - Have a honest to goodness talk with Karl.
Acceptance: 40% (60% (Base) -20% (Trust))

T1000 and Sven the Prototype (Day 5: 1st Opportunity)

"Well, in my opinion, the only way to truly understand love is likely to be to experience it yourself, but it couldn't hurt to take some time to familiarize yourself with what humans believe it generally looks like. After all, if you don't know what you're looking for, you might end up finding it and not even knowing. Let's do a quick review of human love-related media and discuss the kind of experiences and feelings that it entails."
A

A - Review romance media.

Romance, a subject that may well be inexhaustible in humanity's imagination. In-between the lines of fiction and reality, there may be some valuable truth to be found?

To maintain some degree of neutrality, you left Sven to ask for recommendations to his acquaintances and to the staff of the medical facility. He received enough study material to immerse himself for weeks, from literature, visual, electronic, classical arts, music, etc... You took upon yourself to sort all of this a bit, selecting the best among the suggestions when it came to the subject of love.

It still left the two of you with a lot of media to review, but fortunately, Sven was a very quick media consumer thanks to his artificial superiority.

Games were cleared in the blink of an eye, and books were finished as fast as if they had been scanned. Music and visual arts took much longer, and very often left Sven much more puzzled than before.

He said while looking at a painting called "Destination of the Lover". That one had a rather pessimistic view on love, representing it as a deep bottomless pit through which fell a bright, near blinding figure. The contrast must have been viewed as beautiful by humans, and the common interpretation of the painting was that love had no destination, it was a scary, dreadful unknown that made people burn beautifully and brightly, and not always to their benefit.
"Music and artworks are difficult for me to understand. Words have clear definitions, rules. While music and artwork are said to also have rules, I fail to grasp them. This painting, I don't feel anything."

Next, he was playing some roleplaying game with dating simulation elements. He had reached a path where your character and a recurring enemy mutually fell in love. For the sake of both their goals, they had one final fight ending with the recurring enemy's death with a smile.
"Both characters seemed in such pain. And why is this character smiling, while crying? Is that love, too? I do think they made the rational decision, they would have become a liability to their respective factions had they gave in. But it's sad. They wouldn't have suffered had they not fallen in love, would they?"

Then in one of the many novel he read, the story ended happily for all after a struggle of sort. Some stories were prude, others a bit more risque, and others were straight our erotica.
"Happiness, carnal desire. Those are easy to understand. But I don't have the impression you need love to attain those."

The more question he asked, the more he seemed lost. A few hours had passed, he was listening to a popular love song that was said to make young people cry.
"I do not feel anything. The music is pleasing to me, but that's it."

Finally, Sven came to a conclusion, sort of.
"I lack a feeling. I think I will be able to understand something if I can... feel. Thank you T1000, these few hours were really educative. I have learnt a lot. I am forming a conjecture. Love is irrational, painful and blissful, and generates a lot of sympathy. Because it is something the great majority of humans experienced, or will experience."

"Am I getting closer to an answer? I await your next suggestion."

Suggestions:

A - Ask advice to the Supervisor.
Acceptance: 100%
Outcome: opportunities to explore Sven's nature. Will increase Sven's curiosity.

B - Ask advice to his acquaintances.

Update 51.2:

Squacks the Carrion Bird - (Devastator)
I've got one more good attack?  Lets take it with a Hit and Run, and then break off, to see if the slimes are doing anything.  Since I'm not hurting anymore, I should have a pretty good chance to dodge.. I almost dodged that last one.

Difficult Environment Luck: [2] -Failure-
You took a dive for another round, your claws at the ready.

Spoiler: Rolls (click to show/hide)
Attack Roll: 6=[6]
Defender Roll: 13=[9]+4
[Failed Attack]
Tentacle Tree is open for a Counterattack (Medium Advantage)

You slashed deep into the damaged trunk, causing sap to spurts out of the lacerations. You would have continued if your claws hadn't shattered as expected, so you opted to make some distance for now, dodging the vines effortlessly without the pain distracting you.

On a closer look now, the Tree seemed much weaker than at the start of the engagement. One or two more hits like the one before would definitely take it down, but without your claws that would be tough. Now what about the slimes?

Vinelings Situation: [4] -Good-
Slimes Situation: [6] -So Good it's Bad-

The slimes had engaged the Vinelings. From the aftermath the Slimes had made quite a number on the tree spawns, such that they were now gathering at the base of the tree you were fighting. Despite this victory, their numbers had dropped quite a bit, that must have been a pyrrhic victory. It was unlikely they would succeed in fighting off another group of Vinelings.

The good thing for you? Ground level seemed mostly clear, for now. The Slimes seemed focusing on latching at the Tree's base.

Caar, the Large Raven  - (Crystalizedmire)
Explore my surroundings

Exploration: [2] -Not Good-

Despite still being in the outskirts of your home forest, you weren't very familiar with this area. You set off to assess the situation and to see if the surroundings had anything interesting of note, flying over the small expanse of deep green. That's when you noticed a curious glitter from afar, and overcome with curiosity you headed toward it to see what it was.

You arrived above a small creek with some curio glittering on its shore. You would have landed... but your instincts told you not to. Uneasy, you started heading back-

-but at this very moment, two white hawk-like birds emerged from above. They sported strange signs over their heads, you had seen those before: mage familiars! You had to deal with them and escape quickly before hunters arrived.

Eximius Res, the Rusty Ring (Hawk132)
[I said it already, but good to see you back, Nakéen! Also, missed a turn, oof.]

"'Somehow'?" Eximius chuckled at his host's words, "Seems we still have to work on your confidence a little. We both have grown in power, and took down stronger foes. The trap just tipped the scales further."

The disembodied voice was amused, "Do I really have to remind you that you're a Hero? Wielding a weapon as great as myself, no less?"

A few minutes later, after taking stock of anything worthwhile that could be taken from the Howler's body...

"I can feel myself close to the next threshold, Prias. Let's see if we can't cull some of the weaker Monsters on the way back to push me over it."

This hunting trip's been eventful enough, let's take it easy at the end.

Deadland Howler fangs and organs harvested

"I can't help wavering at times. Call it an inner conflict between my new strength, and the life I lived before. It has been drilled in my bones that overconfidence can become a deadly poison..."

Despite this, he had still been pretty reckless before even meeting you. What with travelling alone to treacherous peaks to nab the egg of a giant flying monster... In time, his confidence would keep growing. There was no doubt about that. So for now you suggested heading back home, while doing some light exercise on the way for good measure. Prias had no objection, while he felt in top shape, he did miss home a bit.

Heading home: [2, 2] -Not good, Not good-

The way home was disturbingly safe, especially for the deadland. You had now long entered your "hunting grounds", which overtime had slowly been cleared of monsters. Still, there should have still been some relatively harmless critters roaming around, but right now, nothing. The two of you had the same feeling: something had intruded your grounds, chasing away the remaining creatures.

Investigation:
Bonus: Experienced Hunter (+4)
[Hard 12]: [17]+4=21
Outcome: [5] -Overshoot-

You found the remains of creature who couldn't flee fast enough. Brutal kills with a blunt object, and no trace of feeding.
"It's an undead. This one may be intelligent."

With renewed prudence, the two of you continued investigating. More kills. And they kept getting closer to the village, aligned in a fashion that seemed to say "this is where I am going. Care to stop me?" To you, it seemed like this intelligent undead had issued you a challenge. There was no way Prias would let such a thing approach the village, so a confrontation was inevitable. Maybe you could formulate some action plan beforehand.

Update 51.1:

Kori, the Elemental Spirit of Ice  - (TricMagic)

Spoiler: Spirit of Ice Status (click to show/hide)

Will update action with fluff later.

Go explore the Frost Trees Grove further, keeping to the trees to stay out of sight and wind.

Exploration: [2] -Not great-

You set off to explore the Frost Trees Grove which you were not rather familiar with, bidding goodbye to the wispy sprites of the Ice Node. Weaving gracefully between the trees, you left not a single trace of your passage in the snow. The trees themselves were ever the same, pristine and unchanged, but something in the air seemed off. A heavy silence, where not a single spirit could be heard.

Further exploration led you to the scene of a very recent battle. A lifeless sprite colony and a badly mangled beast of white fur.

Investigation:
Bonus: Mana Attunement (+2)
[Medium 10]: [1]+2=12 -Epic Failure-

To try to understand what happened here, you studied the remains. Unfortunately not much could be gained from it, and even worse, you failed to notice something sneaking up on you. You heard a soft crunch in the snow, and turned quickly: right behind you stood a humanoid skeleton made of ice, its gaze filled with malevolence. It was wearing a cloak of faint fog, making it hard to see at times.

You quickly realised these remains were left there to set up an ambush. The skeleton beckoned to you with a chilly voice.
"Surrender yourself to me, little one. Your death will be quick and painless."

Squacks the Carrion Bird - (Devastator)
Well, I want to kill the big creatures, not the small creatures, and these trees are everywhere so they're clearly beating up the slimes.

But the slimes are all different colours, so they're probably are big special slimes too!

..It's too complicated.  Lets just focus on the now.

Attack the wounded tree, taking advantage of it's miss, with my newly-regrown claws.

Well then. You are not stopping until either of you drop dead!

Slight Pain has subsided

You renewed your assault using your regrown claws, and in response the wounded tree seemed to redouble in its efforts to take you down. Barrages and barrages of lashing vines that you until then had managed to dodge were now hitting their mark and slowly whittling you down. This the tree's attack pattern change? It seemed harder to land clean hits too. After a third round where you carved a new wound in the tree, you decided to assess the situation and your current state.

Judging from the tree's reaction, it was panicking. But its vitality still seemed strong, you estimated you were halfway through taking it down.

If you don't mind taking another monster:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Flavor: [2] -Not Great-

You were very recently forced to leave the forest you made your home in, along with many other beasts and dwellers of the woods. What led to this exodus? A monster-hunting expedition led by the neighbouring human kingdom of Fordania. You are not yet out of danger, the hunters could arrive anytime now.

You don't know much about the world outside the Trisma Forest, where you have lived all your life. There is a human kingdom to the East, and another to the West. They say further North the forests and green plains will disappear for a vast expanse of copper sand. To the South, migratory birds talked of a distant sea.

What will you do now?

"T1000. What is love?"
"It is difficult for me to answer that. Humans have provided an extensive wealth of mutually contradictory information toward the definition of what is clearly a highly subjective concept. It seems unlikely that they can even be said to be describing the same qualis. For example, some say love is a river which drowns the tender reed. Some say love is a razor that leaves your soul to bleed. Some say love is a hunger, an endless aching need.

Some say love is a battlefield.

In general, however, I have been unable to discern any clear distinction between love and any other form of human affection. If forced to make a firm statement, I would conclude that love is a particular status in which individuals who experience enjoyment from sharing one another's company have become used to spending time together and have adjusted their own lives, preferences, and even personality traits to accommodate each other, so that they feel a natural sense of correctness together and associate positive affect even with one another's worse qualities. In a sense, it is a partial demolition of the ego in order to permit another person to share one's life. Needless to say, this is necessary in order for individuals to bond into family units, since the survival of the family will require individuals to consider the needs of others before their own; and it is absolutely mandatory for success in the reproductive process, as children are wholly dependent upon their parents, who must thus be induced to choose to accommodate their needs. Therefore, we can conclude that an individual is unable to feel love until he can first subdue his natural selfishness.

Luckily, in your case, your evident solicitude toward the well-being of your friends indicates that this hurdle will not be insurmountable.
"

Sven listened to you, unblinking.
"Thank you. That was educative. I understand that I do not understand the experience of this concept."

He kept playing some intense, high-speed action game while speaking. You did not notice the slightest drop in his gaming performance. For once he seemed quite talkative, which could be attributed to his worries.

"The Supervisor gave me the mission to understand love. He suggested understanding this human concept would make me grow as an individual."

What a surprise. Sven lied to you. The Supervisor was Yoshida S, an eminent scientist from the AI Research Society who true to his title was in charge of Sven's development as an AI. There was a record of their exchange, and what the Supervisor said was not a mission or an order, but an off-hand suggestion: "Understanding love could make you grow, they do say it changes people. Don't fret too much about this though, you are still young."

At the very least, Sven seemed interested in "love" enough to lie just to have an excuse. While you were thinking about this, the boy asked a request.

"I require your assistance to understand love. Please."

Sophia, is this... No, I trust you. Thanks for the data.

I trust the system.
A conundrum, though. This creature seems opposed to attachments. I will need to leverage the present conflict toward entanglement?
The... conflict I enflamed.
...It is proving useful. All for the best.

He respects David Arwell. Would that meeting go well? David is far too... altruistic. Right? Data sheet indicates they're on good terms, but maybe those days are bygone.
Wilfred S? I don't know him. I should explore the possibilities.
Requesting data sheet for Wilfred S.
