DF Suggestions / what happened to the space bar?
« on: April 06, 2010, 10:15:06 am »
This has probably already been requested, but could we please get the space bar back as the 'cancel' or 'back' button on every screen?  and also since the space bar doesn't work there is currently no way to go back from the embark screen so once you hit start playing and pick a map you are stuck there until you embark the fortress at which point you can abandon (esc does not work on this screen anymore either).

Hunters won't do anything while there are things to hunt, so you need a seperate dwarf who is a butcher (in my experience anyway)

if there is a ramp or stair case they should get out of the water when they need to, but it sounds like you stationed them there.  In order to spar the dwarfs have to be off duty and in a barrack, so you would need to assign a barracks in the half-filled room in order for them to spar in there.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: awesome/ridiculous idea

I started working on it last night, it's slow going as digging ramps kills my fps for some reason.  I have magma, but no water on my map I hope no one get's hurt.  I plan on digging a tunnel over to the magma pool and filling the bottom 2-3 z levels of the pit with magma, and then building my forges on platforms built over the magma.

The pillar is 25x25 and the pit starts at 30ish tiles out and moves in from there.  I will try and upload the map once I am finished with the digging.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / awesome/ridiculous idea
« on: August 04, 2008, 02:44:41 pm »
So I had an idea to build a fort in a completely flat area and tunnel out a slope starting at least 20 tiles from the fort, going one tile closer each Z level down.  In the end creating this:
Code: [Select]
side view

______                      _____________                    _____
        \                   |            |                   /
          \                 |            |                 /
            \               |            |               /
              \             |            |             /
                \           |            |           /
                  \         |            |         /

etc, only much, much bigger.  the pillar in the center will be atleast 25x25

There would be a stretch of land connecting the pillar on one side to the mainland, part of which would eventually be removed and replaced with a bridge.  The fortress would be contained in the pillar, and then on balconies sticking out of the sides if expansion is needed.  ideally I would like to fill the bottom z level or two of the pit with magma, but depending on the map that may not be possible.  getting a flat map with no auqafier, and some kind of farmable layer and/or a brook at the edge I could eventually use for irrigation would be the priority.

Heh, I wonder if anyone can make a 4x4 square tileset...  then I could fit the maximum size DF field on my screen... :D

and then go blind trying to play.

This last square needs to be channeled out in this pit, I guess I'll stand right on top of it to do it...  hey look a chasm!

1x1 would run too fast to micromanage the dwarfs would be ripping space and time moving so fast.
Large Dwarf Collider :o

that's why there's an FPS cap in the init, set to 100 by default.

Probably not since, as mentioned, the game keeps track of the contents of tiles that are off screen already, it just has to draw more of them now, but since DF doesn't use much in the way of graphics processing it shouldn't drag down fps unless you have a REALLY sllllooooowwwww computer.

There are also various challenges you can try:

like the one pick, axe challenge
(start in a terrifying area of you choice with 7 untrained dwarfs and only one pick, one axe, and some plump helmet spawn.  no booze or food to start, no dogs)

Swamp dwarfs
(build an above ground fortress made of wood on stilts above a swamp no mining at all so you'd need to harvest outdoor crops.)

Those are two I saw somewhere on here, or were heavily inspired by challenges I saw on here, do  forum search for challenge and you should get plenty of ideas.

um... actually the OP was asking for open source for the UI.  that's where this whole argument came from...  you know from the OP, who started the thread and asked for open source...

Toady said, very politely, that he is not going to release any source code at this time and probably not in the future.  seriously, respect his decision, no matter how wrong/naive/stupid/short-sighted you think it is, and drop it.

14
So basically what you're saying is:

"hey toady, I know you like to work alone and that's cool, I think you make good arguments for not involving outside people in the project, but you should do it anyway, oh and while you're at it (and while I don't know anything about the game's code) why don't you make this huge epic change to the way the game works in order to accomodate the people you already said you don't want to working on the UI.  Don't be scared Toady, it's just exactly what you DON'T want to happen."

@the people talking about games having poor communities on the official forum.

This is the ONLY game I have ever played where the official forums were the place to be and were actually populated by a worthwhile group of people. You should not Judge a game's community or it's player base by the poorly moderated public (publicish in some cases) boards on the official website.
