DF Suggestions / what happened to the space bar?

This has probably already been requested, but could we please get the space bar back as the 'cancel' or 'back' button on every screen?  and also since the space bar doesn't work there is currently no way to go back from the embark screen so once you hit start playing and pick a map you are stuck there until you embark the fortress at which point you can abandon (esc does not work on this screen anymore either).

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / awesome/ridiculous idea

So I had an idea to build a fort in a completely flat area and tunnel out a slope starting at least 20 tiles from the fort, going one tile closer each Z level down.  In the end creating this:

etc, only much, much bigger.  the pillar in the center will be atleast 25x25

There would be a stretch of land connecting the pillar on one side to the mainland, part of which would eventually be removed and replaced with a bridge.  The fortress would be contained in the pillar, and then on balconies sticking out of the sides if expansion is needed.  ideally I would like to fill the bottom z level or two of the pit with magma, but depending on the map that may not be possible.  getting a flat map with no auqafier, and some kind of farmable layer and/or a brook at the edge I could eventually use for irrigation would be the priority.

DF Gameplay Questions / Anyway to train appraisal skill in fortress mode?

So My broker/trader was also my sherrif and got murdered by a goblin thief he attacked.  now I have no one else in my fort who can appraise so I have no idea what my wealth is and trading is a nightmare.  Is there anything I can set a dwarf to do that will raid the appraise skill?

I was wondering if anyone has any 33g seeds/locations that are either cool or hard.  I am specifically looking for a cave river and chasm, but I bet others would appreciate any cool locations.

I set this up, then forgot to forbid the doors before testing it....I pulled the switch and the magma started flowing, pulled it again and it stopped.  Then one of my dwarves decides that he needs to go clean the magma....it wasn't pretty.  however it worked    :) and I pitty the goblin army that tries to bust in my door. In the interest of not waiting for the magma to cool next time I am putting in a retractable bridge over a 2 z level pit.  so when the army comes I pull back the bridge, drop them into the pit and add some magma.

DF Gameplay Questions / trying to get dangerous creatures

So I keep starting forts in haunted/sinister/terrifying maps and the scariest thing I have found are skeletal ground hogs.  I see posts about zombie elephants and skeletal whales and i was wondering if those are things that show up later or have I just been unlucky in finding the undead.

DF Bug Reports / stockpile wierdness

I don't know if this is a bug or not, but my dwarfs will use things right off the wagaon or right out of workshops, weapons, wood/stone, food/drink, furniture.  unless I have a stockpile for that good, in which case the item cannot be used at all until it is put in the right stock pile, which can take awhile depending on how much stone needs hauling.  Is this because a hauling job for the item exists?

So a recruit just got a strange mood.  He wants cut gems and rock.  I have plenty of both, but he will not grab any materials.  Also he is no longer on the military list, so I cannot deactivate him to see if that fixes it.

DF Bug Reports / Flood gate not working in magma

so I built a flood gate at the end of a tunnel right at my front door I linked up the flood gate like normal, tested it with an empty tunnel, it opened and closed fine.  Then I filled the tunnel with magma.  When I tested my floodgate it opened fine, but it refused to close.  I threw the lever several times, waiting about 10 seconds each time to see if it would work.  I saved and re opened my game and it still would not close.  I don't think it's supposed to be a one time thing.

Topic says it, hunters are no longer afraid of game, but they will not return the kill neither will anyone else.

I am farily new to DF so this may already be in and I just have not seen it yet.  but I would like to see magma rivers flowing out of volcanos.

DF Suggestions / Hunters should not be afraid of undead wildlife

Hunters should not be scared of undead animals.  they should either attack them, or ignore them unless they approach the hunter.  it's really annoying to have to keep drafting and undrafting my hunter as he runs into undead animals while chasing deer.

DF Suggestions / Clothing becoming refuse

I think it would solve alot of problems if clothing became 'refuse' once it had degraded to a certain point and then have it lose it's 'owned' status.  This would, I think anyway, cause dwarves to pick up discarded clothing and toss it in the trash. and then they would seek new clothes if available.
