DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Most depressing sight?
« on: July 28, 2008, 12:59:43 pm »
I had a dwarf catch himself and a bunch of stuff on fire when he went to bury a dwarf who had died in the magma pumping accident.  I learned after that to only build the coffins once the body stops smoking...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Filling a Moat
« on: July 24, 2008, 09:06:00 am »
I just made a channel, it's okay though, I have walls.  I flipped a bridge up on an elf, drowning him.  The other one left.  The dwarves are terrified that they'll be back.

Now though, I have this ugly gash running through my land.  Is there a way to fill the channel in?

usually what I do is dig a ramp on the z level of the moat and mine from the moat to the river underground.  same effect as the channel, without cutting a gash through the map.

Why must you release on days I can't knock off work early...   >:(

kidding aside, this release looks good, the .39 versions with all the world gen upgrades have been excellent, genning wierd worlds is one of my favorite things to do.

I was just about to post about assigning them jobs anyway.  That sounds like a nasty bug sir, I would take that over to the bug forum.

I don't like to cheat and use the space/time bending techniques so I usually set up 1-2 mason's shops making rock blocks on repeat along with a craftdwarfs making crafts on repeat.  Blocks can go in bins so they take up a hell of a lot less space, they also make your constructions more valuable.  This approach does require alot of wood, but I am fond of forest maps so It's never been an issue for me.

....  If you don't find that challenging enough, then go ahead and embark on a haunted desert or something....

I like haunted areas alot, no shortage of bones...
the skeletal grizzlies and eagles can be a problem though...

also I started in a haunted desert once next to a nice big pond, a magma pool, plenty of trees around, oh and the herd of skeletal camels that dismembered all but 4 dwarfs. 2 more of which ate fireball sandwiches while frantically trying to build a defensive wall around the wagon.  So I was left with a miner with a broken leg in bed and my trader makeing wood caskets...  I abandonded shortly after burying the dead.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Your most stupid mistake

Pumping magma through a wooden screw pump...

yeah...

I started a forest fire...

Pumping magma through a wooden screw pump is perfectly acceptable. You would only cause a fire is your magma went somewhere.................careless.

And my biggest mistake was digging out a pit in front of my base(to keep away those pesky goblins), forgot I had put a water channel under it to power my water wheel and flooded the whole fortress.

Pumping magma through a wooden pump causes the pump to be destroyed and the magma to spill out all over the place and also kill the pump operator, Luckily he could walk while he was on fire and dragged himself to bed I shudder to think what would have happened if someone had tried to carry the !!dwarf!! to bed.  it was a bad idea and I do not recommend it unless you want to set all the brush on fire followed by a handful of your dwarfs.

timing, if you link it to a lever by the time the lever is pulled the target will have moved.
