I am confident that we need to find a use for timber. What can we do with it?

My list:

-Personal combat
--spears
--bows
--clubs
--shields
--wooden armor
-siege
--ladders
--rams
--catapults\ballistae
-construction
--wooden buildings
--tunnel supports
--traps
--fortifications
-energy
--fuel
--food
--fertilizer
-transportation
--boats\rafts
--bridges
--wagons

Anything I missed? What can be practical?

I was thinking... What was the most effective way to wage war in a bronze age?
It is quite different to what phalanx did but this looks like a way to make workers deadlier in combat.

Worker Phalanx
While fighting against human hive learned the value of the spear and started to use ones for themselves. To compensate small size of Workers, Hive developed extra long spears meant to be carried by 5 workers standing one after another. They form a long and advance toward the enemy as a single unit. While hive's wooden spears lack metal spearheads they are still deadly against lightly armored targets or horses. Unlike humans, workers don't lose their combat ability once their formation is broken, because they can switch to their natural weapons.

I switch to forest because I want more timber and deny timber to them. I do hope that we'll design something that uses timber.

I am not ready to abandon this concept completely, so here are a modified version of a creative queen

Princess "Lamana v.2.0":
Gross physical anatomy: Lamana is based on something as mundane as regular worker drone. Core differences are:
-Enlarged abdomen.
-Brand new Reinforced Chitinous Armour.
-New limbs with four finger manipulator being replaced by one with four fingers and a new thumb. Special multi-chambered organ that hosts various bacteria for experimentation, assistance in digestion or manipulating microflora of her children

She doesn't lay huge batches of eggs but she lays few of them very often. Due to her size limitation she has some problems in developing large drones but she is more capable in growing many smaller eggs (worker sized are as easy\hard as for her mother. Larger are harder, smaller are easier)

Nutrition: Obligate Carnivorous Digestive System. She need it to power her strong mind and constantly lay many eggs. Additionally, she has an ability to move bacteria from her special organ to the stomach and choose perfect microflora according to a meal.

Environmental Tolerance&Defenses: Roughly similar(but better) to ones of a worker drone. She always have soldier bodyguards around

Personality:
Lamana have a keen mind of an inventor and don't hesitate to engage herself in creative activities using all worker's tools she has. She is infused with a sense of love toward her mother and have no ambitions beside inventing stuff for the good of the hive. Her main disadvantage is that she cares about lost drone children little too much, considering them to be a part of the family.

I don't expect workers to be good in the forest, either. They are too heavy to maneuver between the trees

Need to think more about the preferred front for spitters.

I too believe that we should eventually get weapons of wood and metal...
Honestly? Metal could be used to improve our armor, and toxic or flammable byproducts of mining industry could be used to make fire breathing creatures actually possible.
We have no metal and there are no ore nearby to capture any time soon but we do have 900 timber and this is a lot. Brireme costs 50 timber. Archer cost 1 timber.  I think not using this resource is a huge waste and I am sure that we want a timber related design next turn. Preferably one that will help to assist a siege.

How does this sound?

Siege ladders
Long ladders are constructed from wood. When tied (using ropes made from bark) to Ravanchars or Soldiers such ladders allow workers to rapidly climb over the wall to overwhelm enemy fortress

I still think that we should use our timber. It is a wasted resource otherwise. I am thinking about something like this

Basic wooden weapons
In effort to augment natural abilities of drones hive starts to produce simple wooden weapons including: Very long wooden spears meant to be carried by several workers as a way to counter cavalry charges, simple wooden shields to let workers cover themselves against incoming projectiles, simple rams in form of logs held by either Warriors in their pincers or by huge number of workers.

But can't make a version that looks strong enough to justify a design.

Also, I have an idea that looks a "little" too complex and I am not a huge fan of suicide drones but I think it is worth to share

Insert name here
Those are hawk sized insects that look like butterflies. Their abdomen is one huge acidic gland and their bodies have no digestive system at all. Just like butterflies they have a caterpillar stage. Most of caterpillar's body is taken by a powerful ruminant digestive system improved by specialized symbiont with a small acidic gland for self-protection against predators. This new drone spends most of the time away from the hive. Eggs, spawn by the queen are delivered to forests and left there to consume leaves. At some point it transforms to a pupa and then to an adult insect. This insect have a short life span so they join the nearest hive army to serve as artillery shells.

We could use the nat effort resource for something else, and if all else fails, we an put in a revision or even a design to put the spitters in their own rules, that would let them redeploy as fast as we want. It wouldn't be that much of a problem, I wouldn't think. The strategic mobility is trumped by the fact that we can have them on all fronts simultaneously, which I doubt they can with their mages.
When we'll need to deploy new nat effort (like when actually start a winnable siege) we can revise spitters. Doing stuff in advantage is one of our problems.

Some math

Quote
40 spitters (420 manpower cost killed)

[ranged] 7 skirmishers, 1 bowmen, 5 hoplites, 5 cavalry, 86 spearmen, 1037 slaves and this

This is 0.017 skirmisher, 0,002 bowmen, 0.012 hoplites, 0.012 cavalry, 0.204 spearmen and 2.469 slave per unit of manpower.

On the same front 8(14 manpower) hunters killed  3 spearmen, 26 slaves and this is 0.21 spearmen and 1.85 slave per manpower

If we assume that hunters do absolutely nothing in skirmish\melee (unlikely), they are worse in killing slaves but roughly equal in killing spearmen.
It is hard to evaluate their effectiveness against stronger targets because they are too few of them. If they are as effective as spitters against skirmisher, then it would be 0.204 total and this is simply not enough.

Spitters do kill one stage earlier and have far better attrition rate and probably producing 10% more of them is slightly better than producing unupgraded hunters BUT if we keep spitters as nat effort, we retain their strategic mobility to use them on any front we want.

I insist that we should double upgrade hunters and then raise their producion rate from 2% to 12%

Edit: It is not 8, it is 6 hunters, so hunters are actually better in killing both spearmen and slaves. (0.285 and 2.476 vs 0.204 and 2.469)

I think I should leave those to 10ebbor10...

I am sure that we need to push front 2. That we need to all our spitter there and they are better as national effort. I am sure that to win plains on road to the city we need cavalry. And my production plan is to switch 10% from warriors to hunters and I want two revisions to hunters

Improve explosive muscles power
By dissecting and studying mammals effort is made to make explosive muscles stronger. While strength is the main focus, attempt to make such muscles more flexible and more energy efficient are also made.

Will it be a stretch to introduce this kind of armor both to hunters and workers as a single revision?

We don't want to revise spitters. We want to keep them on one front
