DF General Discussion / Re: Future of the Fortress

You mentioned in the interview the other day that the 200 or so animal people don't have the layers info in their graphics RAWS to show clothing, hairstyles and such visually. That's a lot of data, so seems reasonable.

A somewhat related question:

From my understanding, the creature variation templates will continue to only be for creatures in the upcoming release, instead of being generalized for all sorts of objects. I imagine this is some technical issue, but on which level?
And if it ends up being expanded/replaced by something more general, do you think it could work on graphics tokens as well? Admittedly a bit suggestion-y, but I think it could shorten the graphics files quite a lot using the argument functionality.

This is of course a shame, but I suppose it by happenstance was not horribly timed. Since raw-related mods will need to be updated anyways for the new version, the descriptions of old ones breaking may not be the end of the world.

+1, though I wonder if it should be tied into the religions rather than the civilizations. As far as I know that's where most diet-related mandates come from... except perhaps the dog/cat eating taboo? Hmm, all in all religious law vs state/entity law is something which could really be developed.

If you have it religion-side you could have monster-cults with sacred animals related to the object of worship. The dragon cult which won't let you eat lizards, or the giant-fire-breathing-bunny-titan cult which keeps rabbits fed by the best of garden greens, etc.

Will you include earnings from the Premium version in the monthly Bay 12 Reports? It's hard to speak for others, but I know I would appreciate the transparency.

Also, if it hasn't been disclosed by this point (the start of December), will DF Classic/ASCII mode be ready at the Premium launch?

Definitely the kind of stuff I'd like to see for Myths & Magic. Would be fun to seek out a rare beast to craft the ultimate blade, or see the goblin horde hunt unicorns to near-extinction when raising the army.

This particular detail, or hopefully some form of it, is pretty much accounted for already, I'm afraid:
Quote from: devlog
Better megabeasts

Variety and randomization within constraints (e.g. various dragons)
    Reproduction
Share any intelligent/diplomacy behavior that other hist figs have when appropriate

Hmm, I wonder if any of the diplomacy behaviors in the current/upcoming (Steam/itch.io) version are on hist fig levels? The caravans and raids are sent out centrally from an entity object afaik, but what about the goblin sieges demanding artifacts, as has been hinted at ? If that exchange is decided by a goblin commander, then perhaps the extant intelligent semi-megabeasts could make a similar demand. Otherwise there's the issue of hist figs only doing diplomacy as proxies.

Not that that shouldn't change though, but if the framework isn't there I imagine we might have to wait until the entity/site/diplomacy rewrite post-myths-and-magic.

How moddable will DF be with workshop support? will people be able to change core features of the game (different farming mechanics, different combat mechanics, new systems, etc) or will it be limited to using modules already in the engine?

From what we've heard, it will be easier for mods to work together, but the extent of what's moddable hasn't changed.

But I think some colossuses and similar creatures should be allowed to eat, depending on the mythgen. Precisely because of the terribleness of it.

I just finished Lain and feel I've only understood half of the ending, yet this was about as much as the creators intended for people to understand. I like mysteries so for me this is a positive, but it's not that narratively satisfying.
All in all it was 13 episodes made out of the same stuff that made the last Eva episodes so juicy. This classic is very approachable time-wise, mind-wise less so.

Thanks Toady for another month's worth of replies! :D

The new formatting looks very promising. Are the vanilla raws split into multiple zipped folders going forwards, or was the "vanilla_buildings" example just an example?

The save files have to sit somewhere even in the Steam version, and I see no version of reality where the Toad would go out of his way to make them trickier to find. Hmm, I suppose with the mods being extracted from the save files, you'd have to make sure all players had the same mods downloaded to be used by the succession world. That should be no issue for a vanilla pass-around though.

I don't know if I'll have the time to participate, but planning to watch whatever comes out of this.

I started watching Serial Experiments Lain this week, after constant exposure to the titular character when wandering the neocities. I had gotten the vibe down surprisingly well, but that doesn't mean it isn't extremely good or evocative. And confusing, to boot - it's a show that you shouldn't binge on your first try, as each and every episode contains about as much to process as an average anime's cour, or as one of the two last episodes of Evangelion. Suffice to say it hits the spot.
If you somehow are on an old-style forum for an ASCII-graphicked game in the year, and haven't watched or considered watching the show that tries to condense the early internet essence into 13 23-minute episodes, then you should reconsider.
