Other Games / Re: Shores of Hazeron (new thread with the last updates)

Woah wait, you can get your own server for Wurm?

There is Wurm Unlimited on steam. It has one time payment instead of subscription and you can play offline or on moddable(including simple %rates configuration) privately owned server, for which steam client keeps a registry for. Who is actual hardware host and if there is any monetization of hosting the server or being in official register - I don't know. They are free for players.

1. It's against the license to monetize the WU server, I guess they don't want a competition to the MMO portion of it.
2. The hardware is provided by the server owner (either personal hardware or some VPS/dedicated)
3. Wurm Unlimited is outdated compared to Online, they haven't updated it in a while, where Online got several QoL features such as better looking trees or gameplay improvements.

Palworld. Take it with a grain of salt, but I've read that its lead developer cites Dwarf Fortress as his favorite game.

Where did I say it should be the only way? I'm just suggesting a specific feature.

Which is a nebulous goal. I'm suggesting a specific feature.

(tested by atom smashing some of them which brought in a brief increase in FPS).
If the increase was only brief/temporary and your FPS dropped back down, there is probably a different underlying cause.

Anyway, I suspect something along these lines may already be possible with "autodump" plus some filtering tool (extended stocks screen?), so that would probably be our recommendation. If there are filters missing that you think would be useful, we're open to suggestions. Generally, for this sort of thing, I'd prefer to extend existing commands over creating new single-purpose ones.

The thing is, I was fighting a massive invasion at the time, so the bodies kept pilling up. It's definitely that as the FPS stabilized after it was over. And yes, this is definitely possible with the autodump (used it to teleport bodies to the bridge for atom smashing), but marking all the bodies and other trash for dumping is a hassle, even with rectangle mass marking feature.

IMO you should add a command that would destroy all non-immediately useful items (such as corpses, broken items, etc.) that aren't in stockpiles, because I've had several large sieges and now my FPS is very low, with too many corpses, skeletons and other garbage items being a likely culprit (tested by atom smashing some of them which brought in a brief increase in FPS).

Basically a radical, last resort FPS command when all other ways to increase FPS fail.

Thanks for the advice, but the fort succumbed to FPS death few (IRL) days after this post was made. Now I have a completely different layout.

I'd really like if DF would have minecraft-like pistons (in both regular and sticky varieties), of course linked with the DF mechanism system. Imagine all the crazy traps you could make. Stuff like crush traps, bridge-less airlocks that can let the enemies in, but not out, and so on.

Can we make it bigger than the Diablo 4 community, to show Elon which game is better?

DF Suggestions / Re: Some QOL changes I'd like to see
« on: December 25, 2023, 06:14:13 pm »
Another thing: Stone and wood storage. There's no good way to store those effectively, besides a quantum stockpile which I consider an exploit. Either make them fit into bins or add a third storage option specifically for wood and stone. My fort is littered with all the stone I mined to make rooms and stuff and I really would like to have a pristine fort without removing items via DFHack or using exploits such as quantum stockpiles.

Logistics needs an overhaul as a whole anyway, but not sure what would be the best way to approach it yet.

Another small QOL thing would be an ability to mark items for hauling so that the dwarves would prioritize hauling the item in question to the nearest stockpile (if there's a stockpile that can take that specific item and it has free space) over hauling other random crap.

General Discussion / Santa must be a dwarf!

He has amazing beard, is very industrious (possibly a master craftsdwarf), and he's putting all the elves to work, which is why we don't have to deal with this filth in our world.

I'm seeing a review that expresses concern with a save system that doesn't work. I usually see that as a Red Flag in games.

Saving most definitely works as I am playing the game over multiple sessions with saving. So either an old review or that person is dumb. The game is absolute blast to play and I have to actively force myself to not play it in order to get shit done.

Seriously, great sandbox RPG that allows you for so much. If anyone can't wait for the adventure mode update, this should tide you over: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1159290/The_Bloodline/ - it is not as advanced as Adventurer Mode, obviously, but it still allows you to do so much.

DF Suggestions / Re: Dwarven Mail

Maybe letters can be recycled after a bit?  Turned into books?

That gives me an idea - if a dwarf has over certain number of letters addressed to them, they will put them all in a single book, replacing several items with one item. All of the letters will be still readable even in the book form, as part of the book's description.

I'm fine with naming images the same as Premium (in fact I prefer it so it then works both on Classic and Premium), and having empty images wouldn't be a problem since Classic defaults to using the ASCII renderer anyways, so the invisible graphics won't be rendered anyway, the ASCII stuff will.

If you're just overwriting images without providing custom raws, that's not really going to work with a partial tileset. The partial tileset needs some raws to say it's only replacing some cows rather than all domestic animals (with invisible squares.) So it's probably not a huge leap do the same and provide (a copy of the vanilla) raws for a complete tileset rather than rely on the vanilla raws being present. Now consider that the vanilla raws can be updated. There's potential problems that can occur if you're relying on the current vanilla raws to accurately describe your tileset, rather than the old raws of your tileset's last update. I can see that updating a complete tileset's raws might be some additional hassle, but you're going to need to know how those changes impact the images anyway.

Anyway, it seems somewhat pointless to include them in Classic if doing so merely shifts the problem. Providing just the raws isn't sufficient to avoid errors. Does Bay12 add a bunch of blank images to the Classic download just to stop those? Providing a minimalist tileset beyond that is probably against contract. Seems like it's up to the community to create one, which might as well be the thing that includes the raws. (You can assume that people using Classic have this installed if you really don't want to include raws with a Premium+Classic tileset.)

I guess one could argue that the vanilla graphics raws should be there as examples, without needing to look at the wiki.

I'll probably make an "invisible" graphics set which just uses official TXT files, but uses transparent tilesets.  This should mean that everything will work, but that you won't be able to see anything.

Actually, why not use something non-transparent at that point, like the industry-standard hideous black and magenta checkerboard? (Solid color works too, I suppose.)

It will be full graphics replacement, that's why I'm waiting until Adventure mode is released before I start.
