People who spell the shortened version of "until" with an extra "L" instead of an apostrophe should be buried in a fuckin' desert with their hands and feet cut off.
Buried till they die?

God I hope Dwarf Therapist never becomes the default interface for the game. I completely agree with Toady on his dislike for a game about micromanaging every single dwarf in a spreadsheet.

I mean, yeah, it's popular enough to include as an option deeply buried in an advanced tools window somewhere, but as default, you've just killed the game.

Therapist as an alternative to the current system seems nice, because the current system is so poor, but it's really not the only option. And, "fans like it, therefore Toady must make the game according to their whims" has never been the way Dwarf Fortress had been developed. We celebrate it because it's an independent project, not because it's yet another game-by-committee developed by some massive studio.
For the most part, I find DT to actually add to the time it takes to complete tasks. I prefer just to burrow all migrants and manually check their skills. If Dwarf Fortress, by default, allowed you to bring up a list of most suitable dorfs for a task, like a list of mechanics for when you want to make mechanisms or a list of axe wielders when you have an open position in the militia, I don't think I'd use it at all.

I just tested it, too. Seems to be a coin flip in adventure mode, but always hostility in arena.
Are you sure about that? I know arena's always hostile due to the fixed factions in there, but I've spent the last week or so animating every foe I kill via Animate Corpse. Every one of them has been friendly, rather than hostile, so I don't think it's a coin toss as to whether a reanimated foe's hostile.
Coin toss is the wrong term, because it makes it seem 50/50, but I've definitely had some normal undead I raise attack me. I'd be a little cautious when raising megabeasts for that reason.

Other Games / Free game sites?
« on: September 28, 2020, 04:43:07 pm »
Recently, I remembered a bunch of sites I used to visit ages ago, including Acidplay and Hippogames. Quality was wildly inconsistent, but it was very interesting to see the results of the experiments of hobbyists mixed in with babby's first Gamemaker clicker. You could find some very creative things, whether they were terrible or actually fun.

I was wondering if any sites like this are still up. For reference, I don't mean flash games and webgames, and I don't mean piracy or F2P games with extra fees. I'm thinking more like Newgrounds, but for downloaded games.

I know of itch.io, but it has a much more commercial focus than what I'm looking for.

I guess the police smelled Duncan Lemp's few droplets of African blood and had to open fire on him while he slept.

Eventually, we will be able to generate worlds with lower amounts of grimness and violence, even without death. Where will your blood god be then, forumers?
Endless wrestling of the enemies of Armok, gouging their eyes and snapping their limbs for eternity, in His name.
Pretty sure that counts as violence.  :)
Lower amounts of grimness and violence and without death are not an absence of violence. I have faith He will protect our right to sacrifice.

DISCIPLINE. Nothing but discipline. If an Urist gets too traumatized because of their personality, I can always exile them. But discipline can be the difference between life and death in a battle with invaders.

I make sure to draft some useless dorfs in with disciplined soldiers, so they may learn discipline too. It seems to prevent "HORRIFIED!" spam and also seems to make dorfs a little more resilient to tragedy.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: How do I complete this quest?
« on: September 23, 2020, 02:10:05 am »
I'm not sure it's actually completable. I saw a thread ages ago on that specific task, and nobody could discover what it actually 'meant'. Maybe someone with more knowledge of the game, like DFhack editors, can verify.

I'm aware this post is marked as answered, but i just want to expand this a little bit:
If you kill a creature, no matter if it's a forgotten beast or a kea, they'll be hostile to you after being resurrected, but creatures that were killed by other person won't
Oh, damn. The glitch with the intelligent undead must extend to every other undead, too. That sucks.

I found a ruined kobold cave inhabited by multiple artifact-stealing ettin, one of which was non-hostile until I encountered a second ettin, at which point both attacked me.

Edit: One of them has a slab with the secrets of life and death engraved on it. It's not a necromancer, it just has the slab.
Check legends mode after you're done. Sometimes, you can see some pretty cool stuff. Like a cave inhabited by a large megabeast family.

Quote
AFL legend Gary Ablett Sr. has uploaded a lengthy face-to-camera video in which he claims the coronavirus was “deliberately made and designed, and deliberately released” by the Illuminati and other secret societies.

The 27-minute video titled “What’s really going on and who’s behind it all” was uploaded to YouTube on Thursday. In it, the 58-year-old shares a number of conspiracy theories related to COVID-19.

“I feel a little bit motivated and compelled to come out and say some things that really need to be said concerning our current circumstances,” Ablett Sr. said.

“We’re talking about the Illuminati, Freemasonry fraternities, secret society people who are behind all this. It’s been going on now since the plans all started with the Illuminati way back in 1776.

The "Illuminati" thing is one of the signs you're dealing with a barely literally knob-head. It doesn't take much personal research to work out who and what the actual "Illuminati" were. It just means "enlightened" as in "The Enlightenment".

They were just a group of German rationalists who wanted to get more secular people into the Bavarian government, which was at the time monopolized by the Catholic Church, back when you could still be executed horribly for heresy. The idea that the Bavarian Illuminati were a bunch of cackling old men trying to control the world is just silly. But, i guess to those christian conspiracy theorists explaining how the Illuminati only wanted to promote secular humanism wouldn't really help matters since they think Dawkins is the spawn of Satan anyway.
Bah. Everyone knows it's Majestic 12 who are responsible.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Most Impressive Combat Reports
« on: September 18, 2020, 01:32:17 am »
I sadly don't have any screenshots, but I've seen some real wonders over the years.
  • A totally unskilled peasant dorf broke burrow and kicked a gemstone FB in half, instantly killing it. The same FB had killed every other dorf in the fort.
  • A GCS broke into my nursery and began eating the children. A very powerful child somehow avoided being webbed and punched it to death. The nursery would later, sadly, be massacred by a berserk dwarf with a spear.
  • An angry giant rushed some dorfs hanging out on the surface. All 7 were drafted into a militia and sent to attack it instead of getting punched to death. None had skill or experience in combat. They proceeded to wrestle the giant, bite its nerves out and eventually stomp it to death after it passed out from pain or exertion. There were no deaths, only some broken limbs.
  • A cave dwelling tribe, I think amphibian men, were assaulted by numerous forgotten beasts, and managed to take down every single one. To be fair to the FBs, they were made out of liquids. I wanted to capture them and make a special cave zoo for them, but the fortress crumbled before I could

Dont forget, you can toss a vampire in the bottom of a well with an upright spike,
How do you do that? Tossing the vampire?
I build a special, new 1x1 well with an entry room I can burrow and then lock the vampire into. You can hook the spike up to a lever so you can stab whenever you please. The blood won't always be winched up with the bucket, so it can be hard. Sometimes it can take multiple vampires.
