Messages - Spriggans

Before I begin, I would like to clarify something.

This :

is NOT me.

This is Spriggans the Sparkly. A great dwarf. One of the greatest to live.
He has been gifted the great Power of ressurection.
But fever and depression melted his (and his necromancers friends) brain.
He now lacks any intelligence, and only raises corpses on instinct.

I am not at all like Spriggans.
I am not stupid, nor can I revive dead things.
I am just a mere student. Trying my best to use Spriggans' power to understand the ghoulification process.
This process, could I master it, would greatly benefit dwarven-kind.

Now back at it !

Summer has been productive.

I was really really not expecting the Osprey men to move at all.
Dwarven records state that their carcasses were several years old !
They were in a very dry state, and should really not have risen.
Yet here they are, skinless, muscleless, lacking fleshy tissues and organs :

Even without eyes, the birds have the intelligent cyan glow in their orbits.
They even OPENED THE DOOR by themselves (the cage traps I placed prooved useful there).
They look intelligent.
They are intelligent.

This is a success ! I produced forlorn ghoul !
Could it be concluded that the state of freshness of the corpse is not of primal importance ?

But I must admit these birds still look like beasts to me. They are wild, and un-civilised.
The next specimens will need to be of a civilised specie for more interresting results.

I placed the bird men in a cozy room designed especially for them.
I will give them time to recover after years without moving.
I'll let them stabilize before interrogation. I hope they communicate. But I have little hope, as they lack any organs.

Maybe the state of freshness WAS important after all...

A few months have passed.
The birds were mute and deaf.
Interrogation was unproductive. In the end, they were just animals.
Intelligent animals, granted. But birds anyway.
The dwarves refuse to tame or train them.
The birds are useless...

Yet, this experiment was not a complete failure.
The lack of organs, (esp. the lack of lungs) of the risen birds made me realise something.
Undeads do not breathe...
I would turn this to my advantage.

I started working on a little project which would help me acquire deceased specimens of satisfactory quality.
This is Smallhands' tree-farm-water-supply :

It is conviniently placed near the Surface.
I asked the dwarves to build a little contraption for me near the bargaining area.

It will be used when given the chance.
I must acquire more interresting studying material.

During the last months, I searched our fortress for ANY supply of interresting biomass I could get my hands into.

Apart from boring dead animals, the only accessible materials I could get were :
- N : Racon. A wormy titan. Not at all dangerous. But unique enough to warrant study.
- Ñ : Kol Rimtarbuzat. A "yellow tainted" dwarf. Strangely, the dwarves were afraid of him.

- Experimentations on the body of Racon prooved fruitless.
The worm raised as a mere crude and mindless animated flesh.

Was I really expecting a worm to be intelligent ?
Such a waste of my time !

Spoiler: OOC (click to show/hide)

On the other hand, on the body of Kol, my knowledge prooved sucessful !

I did it again !
This time, it was not a fluke !

Welcome back agonst the living, Kol, my friend.
My dear, intelligent friend.

I will escort him in a resting room for a while. Let him regain his senses.
I realize his body was not perfectly fresh, having been drying out under the Sun for who knows how long.
Still, I have good hope he will be more compliant than the birds.
I will soon examine his body. I must know if his organs are intact.
Interrogations will have to happen.

This summer was productive

I think I begin to understand ghoulification better.
But I need to test things further !
I am about to make a breakthrough that would benefit all dwarven-kind.
My work has to continue.

The time has come to test the process on a larger scale.
Smallhands corpses are lacking, but I have to get more !
I must find a much, MUCH larger supply of fresh corpses.

I was somehow in charge of smallhands.
I had to find a way to produce more ghouls. BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY.
I would not waste my precious time with mere skeletons or zombies.
I had to find a way to acquire ghouls on a predictable basis.
Any lesser undead would be disposed of, via a crushing bridge.

I started by doing some work on the fortress ghosts problem.
I really don't think I can bring ghosts back to a satisfactory life form, even though some claim to have done it.

Hence, I erased the ghosts by placing a large amount of slabs down in the crypt.
It looks like a decently sized necropolis got built here in the past.

I have to say the sheer number of corpses hidden there makes me impatient.
I really hope the preservation conditions of the tissues in these coffins are acceptable.
It would be such a shame for these specimens to be wasted !

Today, I located a large pile of unused biomass.

This was Smallhand's previous war pit, or something like that.
It was apparently no longer used, and the dwarves told me these were "ennemies of the past".

The corpses were not in a perfect state of freshness, nor were they complete. Some lacked body parts, and the blood was all dried out.
They were specimens for me to study nonetheless.
I had to know if the lack of, for instance, head would still allow the ghoulification process to occur.

Goblins, Dwarves, Elves, Trolls, and random animals.
This represented a lot of tissues. The potential was great.
I moved them upstairs near the Necromancer chamber.

The specimens were in place.
The Necromancer was ready to work his magic.
It HAD to work !

...

As I was about to trigger the experiment, I heard a dwarf, named Salmeuk, yelling after somebody !

A fight happened !
Looks like this elven diplomat said something he should not have...

(OOC : the fact that "the Elf-lover" gets the kill is amazing :) )

...

WONDERFUL !
A fresh corpse ! Bring him to me !

I know for a fact that elves lack intelligence. This diplomat probably won't rise as a forlorn ghoul.
But the extra freshness of the corpse was not something to be wasted.
I added the diplomat to the biomass pile.

I pulled the lever, the Necromancer worked his magic !

...

I hesitated a little.
But after the smoke cleared, I must admit I definitely brought things back to life.

But, sadly, as expected ...

The elven diplomat became an uninterresting zombie...

The crude sentient bodies did not rise...
Only small parts and boring animals did move a little.

Sadly, all these beings lacked proper intelligence.
I believe the state of freshness is essential for the ressurection of sentient beings.

Next time, it is mandatory I acquire freshly k...
WAIT ! WHAT IS THAT ?!

Huuuu ?!

I DID IT !

Dwarves. We are legendary.

I'm proud of you. Smallhands is legendary. Our strength is known world-wide.
Even the great Goblin threat is affraid of us.

Look at these cowards ! Sending their cattle to war.

Yes.
Dwarves. I am proud of you.

But I fear I will need to cleanup a lot of mess this year !
I will spend my year tidying up Smallhands, finishing uncompleted projects, and making things look nice.
I know the endless corridors are a mess to track for instance. And the workshops are scattered left and right...

Hoo ! Also ! I want to investigate on why we don't have more than 2 forlorn ghouls in our populace.

The forlorn ghouls...
SmallHands' taled pride.
Where did the bulk of them go ? What happened to the other ghouls ?

Almost all gone ! I must remedy that ! We need more ! How can I produce more ?

I will investigate the process that rises corpses.
From past overseers, I think the specimen needs to be extra fresh for resurection. My future experimentations should confirm that.
But I must study carefully the biomechanics of resurection if I want to bring Smallhands to the next level.
I will need a steady supply of corpses for this. Thanksfully, being in a now 30 years old dwarven fort, I should have plenty available.

The year begins

34
I'd likebto take it, yes. I can play Friday.

35
May I request another turn ? ;D

As for the Tall bar leaking, the problem is the power supply - input.
The (wooden) axles are at the same Z-layer as the magma release.

Upon release, the upper right exit leaks into the axles

Eventually overtaking almost all of them.

using only one or two nether caps won't do it (it needs 6 logs, witch is a lot) . We need to replace all the axles, OR we need to relocate the axles to feed power to the pumps from above.

Speaking of ancient Slavic wisdom, here's a rendering of the folk tale, how mushrooms came to be

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

That !
This is canon now.

37
Why do you need fire safe wood ?
Unless its for a wooden axle (which should never be in contact woth magma btw  !), I think you can make anything out of green glass for machinery, right ?

38
That was an intense first day.
Never had I seen a speaking ghost before... But that's SmallHands we are speaking of, so it doesn't shock me anymore...

Amen !

What's mindcraf ? ::)

40
Ahah ! What a fitting end for this fortress !

41
looking forward to it Salmeuk! Apologies for the Tall bar's mugma needing repairwork again. At least its not my fault this time

anyone else think we should make platinum weapons grade since we got adamantine now? Just zultan replied so far

Mod platinum in ! And praise the plat warhammers

42

Yo ho ho looks like this pirate will be doing some fishing for awhile during the down time!

Fishing ?
Heck ! I'll spend these 3 months near the Rhum barrels !

43
Yeah, last time I checked, the rule was "dont melt adamantine, you'll get broke".
The only way to duplicate it through melting it is by smelting split stacks of coins or bolts. Which is difficult to do.

44
iirc  the king zultan who locked me in was bestowed the title "necromancer hunter", and I believe he/she died.
King zultan was then redorfed.

My memory could be wrong on this though

45
Idk about the necro boat. Necros are meh. Ghouls are cool, but very hard to turn your dwarves into them.

Becoming a werebeast boat could be more badass, but its almost impossible to sustain the boat with the accursed destroying buildings...

I'd say we wait, and we hope to find a vampire and become a vampire accursed pirate ship.
Having bloodthirtsy pirates raiding villages, only to feed off their victims is Metal ! That would make such nightmarish tales !

So, I vote, go ahead for the raiding of towers, but seal any dubious books away (ah, why not having one or two read them, why not., but not all of us)
