The dog story is well-known to people who care about Mars, though it is very much a just-so story.  Still, there's the car that got beaned.

Instant-lose situations fail to be fun.  Designing a beautiful island fortress and having it go Santorini on me would just piss me off.

An Etna-style volcano that periodically springs a leak that we'd have to redirect would be fun (not particularly realistic -- we can't really deal with such things today -- but making it possible in dwarf-world would make a fun challenge).  I seem to recall some discussion of this before.

Having snowstorms be actually dangerous would please me.

Meteoric events like the Tunguska event or Chicxulub would be unfun.  Nakhla would be amusing, but too rare to ever show up unless you turn the knob way up.

(Hmm... the killjoys at wikipedia dispute whether the Nakhla dog even existed)

Killing the process no longer buggers up the save?  That's good to know.

I zip (actually, tar) only because then it's in a convenient package that doesn't look like a directory, but looks like it must be the thing I'm meant to unzip.

Would be handy, for debugging.  At the moment what I do is zip up the save, then play, save; delete the save and unzip.  The 'save' takes half of forever (even on pocket worlds it's not quite instant), and the delete / unzip operation is error-prone.  I haven't accidentally deleted the wrong thing yet, but I've been using computers for too long to believe I won't do it in the future.

I could see making it an init option to add the quit-without-saving command, so that people don't accidentally hit it and weep at the loss of their entire season.

I don't understand your example at all, but I understand this sentence, and I've thought it before when going through the ten-mile-long list of options to find the one that lets me grasp my stuck sword (or to grasp the enemy's head with my hand).

Then everybody dies, except a couple who "don't care about anything anymore" and spend the rest of their lives building coffins.

@othob: awesome.

I was a prolific botter on Travian (partly because the game was only slightly amusing in its own right, so I took to programming and learning html).  Our little group -- one player per person -- had automated trade and precise timing for moving armies around; we could fight off someone 10x stronger.

Unfortunately, it didn't take long for people to get 20x bigger than us, at which point we needed to join mega-alliances, and it got much less fun.

Poison appears to be planned.  You can already buy it.  Can't do anything with it yet.

Those form by small flows, though -- it's not the entire output of a major river suddenly turning to ice all at once (which would be a hell of a sight).  1/7 flying water might freeze, if you live in Yellowknife; 7/7 is pretty dubious.

Water -> Thin Ice -> Ice.

Thin ice forms when it's about 0.
Ice forms when it's, say, -5.
Step on thin ice, it becomes water at 4 degrees, and the dwarf falls in.  Then the temperature system will slowly freeze it back up.  The dwarf had best get out before being entombed.

In deep water, you'd get ice on top of water.  So you can go ice fishing, and lose dwarves to thin ice / getting dragged through the hole by roving bands of carp.

It would be really neat if the elves could calculate a sustainable harvest number for you.  Of course, such a number would be inaccurate, but who cares.

Then at least your "sustainable harvest" on a treeless map would be 0.

And that's how they showed their respect for Urist Dwarfy
That's how they showed their honour and their pride
They said it was a sin and a shame and they winked at one another
And every drink in the place was full the night Ur Dwarfy died

making mandates less insane.

Why?
