This happened before any dwarven casualties.  The dogs, however, were, getting shot down like dogs.  Would that be enough?

Both your explanations would work better if, upon seeing the enemy, my soldiers charged headlong into the throng.  But as you'll note, I said they were *running away*.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / marksdwarves and champs scared by the enemy?!?
« on: January 03, 2010, 11:46:13 pm »
I was under attack.  I had one marksdwarf run out of ammo; the only source of ammo was in the fortress proper, but to get there he'd have to have walked across a bridge in view of the enemy.  I kept getting the message: "Urist McScared, Marksdwarf, cancels Pickup Equipment: Interrupted by Goblin Wrestler."  The goblin was a level below.

Also, I could have sworn that my champions were running for cover repeatedly: they'd head for the station I set for them, then see the enemy, and run back.  Granted, that might actually have been wise: they were bowgoblins.  But dwarves aren't known for wisdom.

Any explanations?  My dwarves were on "soldiers can go outside" and the soldiers were set to chase the enemy.

I didn't think to save while this was happening unfortunately.

I've had one cat bite a kobold to death!  They're really wimpy.  Goblins are much more resilient.  Thieves will always run after being caught, so you don't need to attack them.

Make him the captain of the guard.  Being blind, the beatings he'll administer won't be as lethal, nor will he train in the barracks anymore to get stronger.

I get starter packs of iron and steel off the caravans (pikes, anvils, toy hammers), enough to equip a small squad.  Then I build iron walls from the goblinite and get more caravan steel.  I hardly need flux or iron anymore.

DF Bug Reports / Re: 40d16 Marksdwarves freezing on bridge

Grendus: perhaps the freeze is related to bug #32?  Could they have seen the target just before it went under the bridge, but not gotten a shot off until after the target went under the bridge?

InsanityPrelude: usually their brain turns back on after the intended target is gone (dead or run away); is that what you see?

I believe they were fencing, if you know what I mean.

Well, he's the remaining third of my army.  One is in bed nursing a broken lower arm, the other is dead.  And I have a jeweler who tussled with a fire imp, and a minor who decided to take a shortcut through the magma.  So I don't have a deep pool of recruits to draw from either.

Perhaps I should mention that his love is indeed in his kill list.

Kol Tölunimush has been ecstatic lately.  He killed somebody by accident while sparring recently.  He took joy in slaughter lately.  He has lost a lover to tragedy lately.  He has witnessed death.  He had a satisfying sparring session recently.

I butcher fire imp corpses all the time.  Fire imp tallow roasts are very tasty.  They only burst into flame less than half the time.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Melting down a chest

It does appear to have been reported here, though it seemingly hasn't made it onto the official bugs list yet.
Thanks, I just necroed it over in the bugs forum.

As an experience getter, this is pretty weak: I get so much goblinite and dwarf toys to smelt every year I can barely keep up.  I'm building constructions and furniture out of iron, on a map with no local iron.

I just noticed the same, against 40d#16: http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=46988.0

Summary: several of us see the same behaviour with unmodded dwarves, trying to melt various metal chests.  IronyOwl reports that the dwarf works on the chest for a while, gets experience for doing the job, consumes a unit of fuel, but the chest survives, still designated for melting (I was having the problem on a magma forge, no fuel required).  Contra: Hyndis reports seeing chests disappear without issue.

All other items, including furniture (even cabinets), melt down without issue.

Fascinating.

No, I'm quite sure that my (non-masterwork, exactly as in your case) iron chests aren't disappearing: they tied up both my smelters, with my legendary furnace operators working on them for game-days at a time.  Everything else disappears almost instantaneously, including furniture.
