I've gotten a few of those before, too.  I always assumed that they died during world gen, and were resurrected by an evil biome.

I see.  Thanks for the responses, I guess I have some liquors to brew for my lovable little alcoholics.

DF Gameplay Questions / Unretiring Issues
« on: June 20, 2017, 07:03:22 pm »
I recently unretired a relatively stable fortress, but now some problems have arisen.

The least troubling issue is related to the myriad of "hostile" diplomats and merchants scattered around the caverns.  They seem rather peaceful, but the game is listing them as hostile.  Also, around ten "merchants" are now citizens of my fort, lazing around, doing nothing.

And something rather trifling occurred, too; all of my nobles are failing to recognize that they have offices and rooms.  However, the game still recognizes that the rooms belong to them.  This means that they'll whine and be unproductive unless I unassign and reassign their respective rooms.

The worst issue, though, is my missing alcohol.  Prior to retiring the fort, I had somewhere around 2000 units of liquor for my ~60 dwarfs, but now they have completely vanished.  I believe my food supplies are fine, though.

I know that the hostile bug is common enough, but I've never heard of the rest occurring.  Has anyone else had these issues?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: The little creature comforts.

Walls and floors strewn with vomit and blood.  Truly, nothing's more comforting than month old bodily fluids.

But really, I like to build a watch tower or two for my archers, in case a kobold or werecreature strolls by my fort

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: some question about adventure mode
« on: March 09, 2017, 10:26:25 pm »
I believe that's a world gen only feature.  Hopefully that feature will be implemented into Adv mode some day though.

But you can settle for killing rulers and becoming the ruler of that civ, although this feature doesn't amount to much currently, and everyone in that area will just spit at you and call you a murderer.

And as for your stats, I believe that the game still recognizes that they're legendary even though it doesn't say it.  I would suggest testing it out a bit to be sure, though.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Falsely accused vampires?

I've never heard of a false accusation system in DF, although that would be a nice feature to have.  Vampires can die if they bleed out, so it's possible that he just coincidentally happened to die whilst in the water.  The best way to check would be to go in to Legends mode and search for him

:o A...a plump helmet man lord with dark aspirations.  It makes you wonder how a mute and blind walking fungus is able to "argue" his way into leadership.  I want to believe it had something to do a bloody battle to the death between the plump helmet and the hamlet's greatest warrior, but I don't think that's a sufficient explanation.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: I woke up dead

Creatures in the DF world are notoriously sound sleepers.  I just love it when I find some poor, unsuspecting sod sleeping in the middle of the night.  I just continuously assault the victim subject, and he/she just remains in his/her unconscious state, and I can train my character's stats.  It's pretty hilarious to see, but not particularly humorous when it happens to you.

I would suggest taking a travel companion with you.  You'll never have to worry about boogeymen, and I believe you'll always wake up when you're ambushed.

Okay, I just added +3 discipline tokens to all civilized beings, and I made the dwarfs and humans warmongering savages who abhor peace and tranquility.  Well, I ended up attacking a group of nobles in my adventurer's city, and, while one noble fought back relentlessly with a scroll--you'd think he would've chosen his knife, but to each their own, I guess--the one soldier in the area rushed in and did nothing.  So, taking advantage of this ridiculous situation, I asked him to join me, which he begrudgingly did...At least he didn't join me in slaughter.

On the bright side, though, legends mode has some pretty interesting stories because of the perpetual war and unwavering will of the people.

I don't know, the system kinda works.  I mean, if you saw some random guy walk into a tavern and lob a patron's head of with a glistening scimitar, would you rush him with a butter knife, or fear for your life?  At least guards and soldiers will usually defend civilians if they see these actions, especially when it comes to a lord--even though some soldiers are inept, and decide to sit back and watch their lords/ladies be disemboweled.

And as far as bandits go, the fact that they don't attack on sight will at least permit you to join them.  Bandits have scruples too, I guess.

But, overall, I will agree that there should be more repercussions for ruthlessly slaughtering every innocent being you come across, but I guess we have to wait 20 years for the justice system.

On a side note, this artifact update might at least generate some interesting conflict with civs.

I remember having a human necromancer who, with a horde or 50+ goblin skeletons, crippled an opossum demon, flicked coins at him, which fractured his bones, and smashed his skull in with a warhammer.  Not a particularly great feat compared to what most of the community accomplishes, but he was certainly my best adventurer.  He was a legendary hammerman, dodger, and fighter, with superhuman strength.  And you have to admit, battering a demon with coins is a little badass.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: New player. Not sure what to do next.

Get to the magma!  Keep digging until you see that invaluable red liquid, channel into it, build smith workshops over the magma spaces, and forge to your heart's content.  Also, build up a competent squad to deal with any pesky magma crabs that try to immolate your poor miners and smiths.  Oh, and don't dig too far into any adamantine, or else...well, it won't be pretty.

Or use trees for coal to make metal.  Not my approach, since I prefer to use them solely for construction, but your dwarfs won't have to travel to the depths to forge, at least

Well, you could trade it to a caravan, for one.  On the other hand, you could use it to create a cage trap, which captures enemies sometimes.  I'd suggest selling it, since cages are simple enough for dwarfs to make.

Don't quote me on this, but I believe necromancer slabs disappear if they're moved (of course I might be wrong about that).  But if you do manage to find it, or a different one, I would suggest leveling your dodging, fighting, and [weapon of choice] skills to at least expert.  After that, I'd suggest bringing an army of at least 50 zombies to a dark fortress, and let them act as fodder for the...clown at the top, while you cripple and kill it.  If all goes well, you'll have a nigh unstoppable zombie...clown on your side.

I tried it once, but I accidentally smashed its head in with a war hammer, so that was a failure

I always liked that glitch.  I've done characters where I would get a companion, he/she would be brutally slaughtered by some creature, bandit, or...often me--yes, I'm a sadist--and I would return to my lord, or wherever, and see my companion in the flesh, with his/her starting weapon and clothing.  I just think, "hey, buddy...sorry about that thing before, but I promise I'll protect you next time.  (Probably not, though)"  I believe I've even had it happen about 3 times in one world once
