Forum Games and Roleplaying / Just a Town OOC
« on: April 07, 2019, 01:44:21 pm »
Hello fair folk. My name is Rosewood. I am a wizard.

I hear you would like to make this town a borough. While there is no ruler in this land, I have come to help you create your own charter to set up your basic rights and responsibilities to help you transform from a smattering of peasants, to an organized, safer, and prosperous lordship. Do not be concerned I wish to deceive or rule you, no. You will establish your own guilds and hold elections. Perhaps some day you may have a kingdom and expand to other lands. It is a good thing, to dream. it is the magic any peasant can cast, but it takes practice.

About:
This is a special game that is a medieval fantasy simulator. The simulation begins with nothing more than roleplaying. There are no basic gameplay mechanics, but this can quickly change. Past incarnations have created day night cycles, currency, exploration, combat, and much much more. Guilds will form around an aspect of gameplay expansion and upkeep. A player can join multiple guilds, and generally the more responsibility you take on, the wealthier and/or more powerful you become. This can serve as a light exercise to practice game hosting in a controlled environment with help, or more, or less. Though everyone will need to pull their own weight somehow. Different guilds can cooperate on similar pursuits. All it takes is someone to declare themselves a Guildmaster to form a new guild. They then create a thread and players can discuss that aspect of gameplay. Guildmembers can be promoted and assigned aspects of these responsibilities, and elect their leader. Then the guildmasters can elect the Lord to help regulate the guilds and overall game.

Sound like fun?

IC Thread

Guilds:
Just a Town's First Official Currency Guild

Citizens:
Charter Adviser Rosewood (roseheart)
Guildmaster Fodge (Pavellius)
Maple (FakerFangirl)
Hunlif (Imic)
Salade (The_Saladman)
Fenrir (TheRedwolf)

When you join, choose a fantasy name, bonus points if it kinda sounds like your username.

Once upon a time. There was a fudge reservoir which had special chocolate-y properties all manner of beasts, beings, and machines would go to war for. Today is another such day, sad really. So much destruction, over something so...sweet.

The shit stain on my permanent record is back! Watch as two forces collide in yet another "make your bed and sleep in itfree customization game" from roseheart.

But wait, there's more!

This is also a cooky webcomic (I make no promises on quality, I save that for IRON GLADIATOR) AND the audience will be invited to participate in the drama. Or even submit mercenary units in the middle of play. If the players spend fudge on your units, you may earn a spot in the next battle!

You children ready to make a mess?

General Discussion / Steam impact
« on: March 24, 2019, 10:52:13 pm »
So Steam release will increase DF playerbase.

If it is small these forums will probably still notice more activity.

But it probably won't be.

Making this thread to talk about what DF on Steam means for the (near) future of the Bay 12 Games forum. And DF community at large.

I suppose on the extreme end there might be cause for a convention. DwarfCon. Is/was that a thing?

Roll To Dodge / Roll a Wish!
« on: March 24, 2019, 07:32:33 pm »
This one seems rather popular on forums, and after glancing at the pages of history and old topics in the various nonsense I couldn't see one. So I'm making one!<P>Basically it goes like this. The first poster, which is me, states a wish.
Example: I wish I had a million dollars!
And the next poster corrupts the wish, and then posts a wish of his/her own.
Example: But the million dollars were stolen from a bank and you end up in jail!
I wish I had some pie! And so on and on. Ready? Let's start corrupting! I wish I won the top prize at the swedish lottery.

Same as that. Except roll the outcome of the above poster. You can use your own formula, but typically it is something like:

6 - Overshoot, Succeed so well it's bad.
5 - Success, your wish came true!
4 - Partial Success, your wish came true more or less!
3 - Minor Success, your wish came true technically speaking!
2 - Minimal Success, your wish came true in an ironic way or something!
1 - Failure, your wish came true! No. No it did not.

"Eh, hem."

*rubs lamp*

"I wish for an Ankylosaurus egg!"

Helloo. Lovlies.

I will be hosting one of these games in about a month or so. This is infact an interest check topic- you can vote for more than one experience, but I do ask you think there is atleast a 51% chance you will be down to play. It would be a shame if I put in the energy to prepare one, and there simply isn't anyone to play. To avoid this scenario I have made this thread. Feel free to just post the letters. I may consider custom requests. These are all games from my past I have hosted(usually with minimal success for one reason or another). A suggestion should also be for a past roseheart or gameboyblue game.

Quote from: A.
Title: XenoBrood
Format: 4 or 8 players, competitive
Runtime: About a couple months
Synopsis: This is a documentary about the life cycle of an alien organism. Each player is one sister hatching far from each other. They have the profound ability to absorb characteristics of other life forms. Only one can be the next queen however, and in an elimination style tournament with intermittent periods of player versus environment, they will see who deserves to be the next brood queen.

Quote from: B.
Title: Who Goes There?
Format: 5 to 8 players, mostly cooperative
Runtime: About a couple months
Synopsis: Some Marines check out a distress signal from a science outpost. Their transportation crashes and they are stranded at this icy base. They must keep their body heat up as they perform tasks to restore communication and send for help. Then they just need to wait. That shouldn't be to hard, right? Based on a StarCraft custom scenario called The Thing: ICE, the John Carpenter film The Thing, and the short story.

Quote from: C.
Title: Pandemic × Plague Inc.
Format: 4 or more players, mostly cooperative
Runtime: About a couple months
Synopsis: Based on the board game and video game, a team of doctors try to detect, deter, and destroy an out of control plague. There may be more than one plague active. It's the race to the cure versus the race to adapt.

If you sign up, you will receive a reminder when the game thread is created.

ROLL A GENRE!

About: I am taking this opportunity to work on my story telling. Which admittedly has traditionally taken a back seat to my gameplay tinkering. That said I see a few ways I can tinker with the RtD agenda to amuse me(and, hopefully you!).

Old Planet - AGE OF GODS
Old Planet - AGE OF PRISM

A barren planet quietly orbits a sun somewhere in the silent cosmos. This planet wasn't always desolate, infact there are fossils of beasts, and beings from long long ago. Perhaps under the ice something is preserved, perhaps in the catacombs something still stirs. Perhaps not.

This game has 4 Acts, and it is a pvp god game.

General Discussion / 40 isn't old
« on: March 15, 2019, 12:27:49 am »
(disclaimer: I am 30)

I just met the author of THIS CHAIR ROCKS, and while she is 66, she is very...youthful.

Aging is different for everyone, depending on habbits, dna, environment, heck maybe even luck. Seen Toady One's interview in Polygon and I know he has too many PMs with his project to get to it, so maybe if I just send this into the Bay 12 conciousness he will receive it by osmosis.

You are still young dude. Do some stretches, eat well, get a little worked up once in awhile(even a half hour of exercise a day can do wonders) but there are people so much older that feel young and laugh at someone that number referencing it as old age. Don't prove them wrong by not taking care of yourself though.

And best of luck with your medical expenses.

General Discussion / Forum Games are Real Games
« on: March 06, 2019, 08:27:04 pm »
Now days indie video games become crazy popular, even with only a few or even one person designing the whole thing.

Each day it becomes easier to make games. For years players have made full conversion mods. Games have releases "map makers", with tools to make custom scenarios. I remember my poison of choice was "StarEdit", StarCraft's map maker. And I actually spent more time playing other's "custom maps" than the game itself, sometimes I was a gladiator, or a pokemon, or even a hero in "defense of the ancients", a map that later become a "Real" PC game. Tools like these make it so an amateur with an idea, has one less step between the idea and the players.

Introduce forum games. Maybe you have played one, Mafia perhaps? (yes, it also available in other formats, like board games) The first time I played it I was blown away. How could something be this exciting? And not a video game, but a text based roleplaying game? My eyes were opened. There is something here...this medium of games on forums isn't as limited as it appears.

Since that day I have dedicated myself to what I have found to be the medium of games that has the thinnest membrane between the idea and the players. Within a day,  I can see something I thought of being played by 6 players. As a former board game designer hobbyist, this meant going to meetups and playing each others games cold. Personally I am more a maker than a player, but it was polite to go through the gauntlet of people's half bakes games, so they might try yours, its only fair. But Forum games have allowed me to be selfish. I rarely play others, and that is fine. Everyone making games are finding plenty of players eager to test them out. I feel there is a quite renaissance happening in this medium. Or perhaps it's just at a highly optimal equilibrium of content creation and consumption.

Either way I have been so liberated by forum games. I used to dream of being a video game designer, but I just did not have the patience to code. Game mechanics are different. Though if I want, I can even improvise as I go. I keep seeing glimmers of there being something here, some way I can accomplish the kinds of experiences I'd like to deliver, in the most humble of all of gaming's mediums.

I am really excited.
