Forum Games and Roleplaying / The Grid (Out-Of-Character Thread)
« on: April 30, 2021, 08:58:46 am »
This is The Grid, a forum game where you control a random unit from a number of classic grid games. This is a cross-forum free for all!

The List
Suggestions are welcome, but depending on how familiar I am with it / how much learning is required a game may be delayed, substituted, or denied. (prioritizing boardgames right now)

• Battle Hunter / The Hunters
• Battleship: The Classic Naval Combat Game
• Checkers
• Chess
• Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
• Fire Emblem 7
• Frogger
• Into the Breach
• Pokιmon Mystery Dungeon: Red/Blue Rescue Team
• Snake
• XCOM: Enemy Unknown

(Requested/Under review)

• Civilization III
• Crypt of the Necrodancer
• D&D 5E:  Faerun
• Helltaker
• Pac-Man

Hall of Fame
Game 1: ArchimedesWojak (Snake)
Game 2: a1s (Knight) - Accrovideogames (Troubadour)
Game 3: This could be YOU!

How to Play

Unit Sheet:
After signing up you will receive a PM of your character when the match starts.

• HP: If this reaches zero, you are eliminated.
• Move: How far from your current location you can travel. (You can't move diagonally, unless it says otherwise.)
• Initiative. (See Turn Order)
• You may also have additional powers and abilities.

Turn Order:

• Melee Phase
• Move Phase
• Ranged Phase

Each phase, highest initiative goes first. Then this repeats for the next phase. You can participate in multiple phases if your unit is capable of different types of actions.

Note: Your action can't be based on someone else's. So you will need to decide where on the map to target your actions specifically. If you target a unit, you will aim for where they were at the end of last turn.

Note: You can describe the path of movement, otherwise it will favor N>E>S>W.

Note: Anything else left vague about your actions that are not covered by these defaults, will be resolved at random.

Rules
1. If one player is considerably slower at taking their turn than the others, they may be removed or replaced so the others can play at a reasonable pace.
2. Details will be sent to you by pm. Post your actions in a spoiler. DO NOT LOOK at anyone else's spoiler. (There is no rule against changing your move/mind, feel free to do so.)
3. 1 point per turn you end in the goal zone. 2 points for a kill. First to 5 points wins! Ties go into overtime! (Unless a truce)
4. A note about cross-forum play: Please be on your best behavior, not only may the rules of each forum differ, it's good to make a nice impression as you will be representing your forum and others' impression of it. Ok, now back to chopping each others' heads off!

Waitlist - please confirm participation
(These people have priority sign up, but new sign-ups are welcome! Points from last game can be spent to nullify games from your unit roll.)

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Hurt & Heal: Marvel vs DC
« on: April 23, 2021, 02:41:43 am »
Marvel:
60 - Hulk
50 - Thor
40 - Iron Man
30 - Captain America
DC:
80 - Superman
50 - Wonder Woman
30 - The Flash
20 - Batman

Once per hour you can perform one:
• heal 1 and hurt 1
• heal 2
• hurt 2
• use a unit power if they are still alive and not disabled (unit can't attack own team)
• remove a status effect from a unit
(if a unit would gain more than their starting health, stop at their starting health)

Unit powers:
• Hulk/Superman: hurt 3
• Captain America/The Flash: hurt 1 to up to 3 different units
• Iron Man/Batman: add '(Disabled)' after a unit's name
• Thor/Wonder Woman: heal self 1, and hurt 2

A stealth spaceship above the planet observes the coming crisis. Stan Lee rests his hands on his hips confidently, while The Guardians of the Universe nod to each one by one and then turn to watch silently.

1. Real words only. No gibberish.
2. You MUST place the word in a spoiler.
3. If you don't respond to a guess in 1 hour, someone else can take over for you. (Using your word)
4. You can try to guess the complete word 1 time per game. (per player)

This topic has been moved to Life Advice so I can field more non-forum games related questions, comments, and discussion. Though I'll still take suggestions for rehosting unfinished forum games I hosted in the past.

Has this really always been a thing O.O!

What is a game I've hosted that didn't finish, that you'd like to see play out?

I guess I should take this opportunity to say why it's so difficult for me. The biggest factors are that I am autistic, and where I lie on the spectrum makes it very difficult to remain professional. I have short attention span. Infact I read slow, not because I take longer to process a word, but because I lose my train of thought mid paragraph. I forget why I open a new tab. Or why I am even holding something sometimes. There's been games I took a small break from, and forgot I was even hosting it, until weeks later.

I also don't often host well established game formats, like Arms Race, or Mafia, or games with a clear path to completion. It's usually an experiment, and I have not always clearly communicated that. These days I add "[Lab]" to my game to signify it is something new.

I wasn't diagnosed until last year, and for about 5 years, I could not hold a job for any length of time, and I didn't know why. I was homeless. The only creative outlet I had access to was hosting forum games on public library computers. Often urgent matters relating to basic survival made it impossible to continue at times. Fortunately the happy ending already came. I was diagnosed, and I am living safely.

Sorry for oversharing like that, but I am constantly reminded by a handful of people that they proudly proclaim me to worst GM, the only true failure on Bay 12. I can't be more than I am, but I can be more honest about why I falter, and the risk that it will happen. It is a goal to reach the credits of my games, like I did with Tribe, hell or high water, I fucking did it.

I'm about to complete ArenaCraft tonight, and am considering what people want. Maybe it won't be my next game, but I'd love to hear what you liked...

(Also, I did just finish ArenaCraft, another complete game in the can! :D)

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Hangman

Literally just hangman. :)

Rules:
  • If you guess the word you win. You can now become the host.
  • If the host doesn't reply to a guess in 24 hours, someone else may take over(same word or new).
  • It's a good tradition for the host to post an image representing the word if someone gets it. :P
  • A body has 10 parts: ===---]--O
(If you want to draw it differently, you can.)
  • You can try to guess the complete word 1 time per game. (per player)
  • The host can make their own rules as far as hints.

Spoiler: DONT LOOK (click to show/hide)

Guess the word in this spoiler.

If this really bugs you so much, make a new thread with a new title for the same premise. 227 pages of a now-dead thread might be intimidating the few who might use it into not doing so (plus as you said, it references something most of us here don't have on our radar, so that doesn't help the matter), and if that gets good activity, then maybe we should revisit the idea.
So be it.

This thread is for:
- Discussing proposed game setups and mechanics
- Sharing game ideas you don't plan to make yourself to inspire others

Also forum game suggestions are allowed. Basically just post a game you'd like to play:
-rehost request
-new game suggestion
-idea you don't want to host yourself

Some tips for setup design:
- Consider copying one of the basic games to get some practice if you are a beginner. Otherwise, consider making a small game that wont last long and see how you handle it, before trying something more ambitious or unique. (RTD are very easy to get started with)
- Keep your instructions simple, especially if it is a new type of game. Make it easy for your new players to understand what they need to do, and get to playing.
- Players who sign up may drop out, consider making your game flexible in the event that 1/4th to 1/3rd don't show up, so that when a player doesn't post in too long you can drop them and move on.
- If you burnout easily, schedule days off from constant updates, your players will understand if you give them notice and set their expectations. If you tend to abandon games be honest about it. A rule that says that the GM gives players consent to vote to replace an absent GM after a week is pretty good to save the game in an orderly fashion.

Old thread: Gaming Block (Game Discussion Thread)

Quote
People in FG&RP are very economical about how many threads are stickied in the forum game section, as it is always "one less game on the front page".

I believe the purpose of that 25 word post could be folded into the Forum Guidelines sticky, which already has special guidelines for forum games, like honoring game rules.

With that gone, the next most worthy candidate for sticky would be ExKirby's "Gaming Block (Game Discussion Thread) (Totally Not Roller's Block)", which is a casual thread for discussing game design.

^Message I plan to send ToadyOne in 2 days.

The only caviot I can really think of, is that the thread in question references "Roller's Block" which is more specialized and from a subsection of this subforum. Which I just feel is kinda tacky. ExKirby hasn't logged in since 2014 so everything about the setup is also static. But the OP holds up well enough, and a "teaser" for content in the biggests subsection isn't bad, even if the reason it is there is some what anachronistic.

I suppose there's the fact that it hasn't gotten much use in the last year or so, though that is a motivation for doing this.

Unless there is something about it that demands a replacement... then the thread should be considered worthy of sticky for its' utility for promoting elevated game design discussion.

Thoughts?

I have created a replacement thread: Game Design Discussion and Review

ToadyOne received the original proposal. I sent it when I locked the thread. At that time voting had gone from +8 -4 at it's peak to +7 -7 so I left it to them to decide the merits on it's own. Since then there has been a Discord based campaign to "Dogpile on Roseheart" (exact quote) which maybe had little or a lot to do with the rapid change in the polls afterward but I can't be sure. It was even when the message was sent out.

Thanks for those that participated in the voting and discussion on swapping sticky of two topics.

Synopsis

Space is endless, but it does have a beginning. These are the stories of the challenges faced by those bold enough to explore it, on their own terms. Together they will discover the trajectory of their own journey. Follow the tales of intrepid spaceships and the crews than man them. In this expanding cosmos stars will die and others will be born, shining their light for all to see across the cosmic canvas in this eternal odyssey. Let's go take a look.

Beginner: If you'd like to join the crew, please be ready to give it your best effort for the ~6 turns or 1-2 months of gameplay. The game is experimental and a particular mission's playstyle may not be to your liking, but if you drop out before an episode ends it will represent an extra struggle for others in this team game.
★Advanced: Returning Players and former Guest Character actors will be offered roles with greater responsibility before newcomers.
★★New Game+: Complete a season or equivalent to be offered roles with greater responsibility before others and have quirks enabled on standard characters.

Continuation Claus: If this series lies dormant for 6 months, I give my blessing for others to attempt to continue the legacy of the world and its' characters.
