Out of curiosity, can you make compound short bows in Dwarf Fortress? Because I have reason to believe that a dwarf with a steel compound short bow would be one of the most dangerous archers in the world.

With mods, yes. But dwarves can't even make a wooden bow (probably because they're too elven) by default. Only crossbows.



On another note: I reaaaaally dislike aquifers when you're just starting out. I'm gonna need to just dig in the dirt for a while to get everything inside and set up before starting to outline the aquifer underground.

Anything notable happen?

I haven't actually started yet. ^^; I'll be able to today though once college is over for the week.

He claimed a mason's, that means it WILL be useful to some degree. Either a floodgate, door, cabinet, chair, table, or some other furniture.

Honestly mate. It wasn't until you showed up at BLAZECOOKS that anyone was at all concerned about capitalists. Then you got over to Redstar, and "shook stuff up", and now they're on a dragons-damned crusade. SO! Time for a new fortress after the (short lived) success of the Commie fortress. This one is going to be a bit different however.

List of tasks/rules/whatever
-Make everything as pretty as possible. (Gotta show up the Commies that what came first is better)
-Every dwarf will serve in the military at least one year before moving into the reserves. After three the dwarf can be let out as 'retired'.
-Tasks will be dictated based on the top three highest that a dwarf can do unless it is one we have no need of at that time. (milkers and cheese makers, I'm looking at you.)
-Useless dwarves will be placed in the military full time.
-Three kinds of squads; Hammer, Crossbow, and Spear.
-Civilian dress shall include either a hammer or a spear and always a shield for defense/just in case.
-Families will be using the same kind of weapon as each other.
-ALL dwarves that worship a god of blight/disease/whatever-like-that will be killed; preferably by dropping them down a hole into the Temple of Armok where the god of death/whatever-like-that will be worshiped.
-Libraries! Taverns! Temples!
-Coins will be minted for the year out of the metal voted to be used.
-All families will work similar jobs if possible.
-All bedrooms will be houses that are multi-level with workshops and material storage located below the bedrooms themselves for ease of access and stuff.
-Fortress will be built in layers.

Bah. This new government is killing me! Almost literally. They've banned all religion! It's insane I tell you! They've ruined my livelihood by repossessing my beautiful church and all the artifacts and jewels and precious metals that went into it, WITHOUT paying me for them! The bastards. Damn commies, they've already forgotten what came before them! What paved the way for that tyrant new ruler, Delerdorf, to take over! Us! The socialists! The least they could do would be repaying what they've taken! But nooooo, it belongs to the people. IT ALREADY DID! How in Boatmurdered am I going to make a living now? Teams of guards and soldiers have been moving through the Mountain Home removing anything of value to melt down or use elsewhere. Anything that has some quality value is fair game to be destroyed, for what? Equality? There has been plenty of equality already. Everyone had enough to eat, everyone had shelter, and so-on! Now I hear people are barely getting by on raw plump helmet and water because all the good stuff has been taken by the government.

I'd better hide this journal before someone reads it, apparently speaking out against Delerdorf and his government is a capital offense.

Groups of guards have been going from house to house searching the private residences for valuable stuff now. This isn't good. I can't let them find out about the fact the Worshipers of Armok still meet. Time to hide more stuff again.

Someone ratted us out. Thankfully they didn't find out I managed to keep my journal and quill! Hehehehe. By Armok my arm hurts. At least the blood isn't running on the page. I hope this pleases Armok enough to save me and the others. Now I'm stuck in this damp, disgusting cell awaiting trial.

Well. The trial is over and now I'm on a wagon with my other 'conspirators against the state' being sent off to some unknown place far, far away. At least we're being guarded by a friend. Good thing he's made sure that no one suspects him as being friendly. I can see a great many wagons leaving in similar directions... This does not bode well. It looks like half the population is being sent off to die in some great purge! They're sending out wagons of 'colonists' to hide the fact this is our execution. Armok hear our prayers...

We've been traveling for months now. There aren't many of us left, many of my compatriots have died to vicious animals and goblins, many of the guards have been killed as well. Now it is only three actual guards and 9 prisoners. We've been forced to leave a few wagons behind as the animals pulling them were slaughtered or they got stuck in mud and swamps. Oh Armok, the things I've seen... We passed an elven settlement and I swear I could see the fascist treehumpers following that name to the letter, in full view and not caring who or what saw them.

We've reached a strange place. Weird trees and plants grow among the willows. Strange fogs move across the landscape and the rain is some disgusting sludge at times and who knows what at others. I don't like it. I also don't like that a few of the other dwarves, none my own thankfully, have been acting strangely. As if worshiping this place whenever the fogs and rains happen. One of the guards was included.

This place is cursed! A deer was caught in one of the fogs, something happened to it. It changed! It was awful! The eyes changed to this disgusting fiery color and it charged us, teeth now sharpened, muscles bulging through the skin grotesquely. One of the strange dwarves fell in worship before it kicked the idiot's head in two. The guards wailed upon it with their weapons, two getting grievously injured before it was killed by a lucky shot that crushed the head from Santume II, our faithful guard. Truly he has been blessed by Armok for killing such a monster. Then...then... the corpse of the dead dwarf and deer-thing GOT BACK UP. *The writing turns into shaky gibberish*

We have finally found a place that is safe from such horrid things. We think any way. There's only seven of us left. All my dwarves thank Armok. We have made a pact that all who worship the clouds of fog and the disgusting rain shall be purged from the face of the earth! The only way to cleanse this place is with the blood of those who try to make it spread! And Armok will bless us for it!

The tyrant in charge of the government will think us dead. We shall prove him wrong. We shall make a place so great he HAS to come see for himself! We were the start of his reign, and Socialism shall rise yet again! All who he tries to kill will be welcome here if they make the journey, except those who made it through the worship of whatever god this horrid place is lorded over.
