DF Gameplay Questions / Download Doesn't Work On New Computer
« on: December 21, 2017, 09:38:55 am »
Hello Everyone!

I've been playing Dwarf Fortress for a few years.  Recently, I have switched computers to a Windows Surface, but for some reason when I try to go to the main web page of Dwarf Fortress it does not load.  I can load any of the other pages, just not the main page.  I have also tried to download the newest version from the 'old versions' web page; what happens when I do this is it will open the download bar, I'll select save as and the location, and then it will proceed to do nothing.  Has anyone else had this issue?  I'm looking forward to a less buggy version (particularly the visitor bug I've been reading about...) to play over the holidays!

Thanks!

DF General Discussion / Re: Show us your entrance
« on: February 23, 2017, 05:38:54 pm »
I always channel to a hallway where the depot is located or dig it into a cliff side and then smooth out the cliff so it isn't jagged.  From there a 2x2 or 3x3 hall goes to a stairwell leading to the fort proper.

That is the only part of my entrance that has been consistent across forts.  I've done big surface fortresses, above ground towns for the non-dwarves, little wooden forts, nothing but a hole in the ground, etc.  I like experimenting with the surface and entrance, but after a while, the FPS loss of focusing on the surface vs. below ground drives me crazy.

Right now my fort has a second hallway with a huge room with retracting bridges.  I use this to drop invaders a good 10 z levels into an arena to fight my militia (no crossbows or traps allowed).  The arena also is made out of retracting bridges that drop the remains into my forges so goblinite can be melted down.  This too has a retracting bridge setup that drops the leftovers into the tombs.

The rest of the fort is pretty basic and boring...  I'm seeing how long the fort can last with constant battle via the great retracting bridge, steel, and grit.

DF General Discussion / Re: Who is the player?
« on: February 23, 2017, 05:26:36 pm »
Very interesting discussion, but I see a few points of play that work against the Armok and Social Conscience arguments.

In the Armok case, the player in practice does not have total control over the dwarves.  For instance, when an item is declared to be dumped, without excessive micro-management, which dwarf does the task is not determined by the player.  Even with total micro-management (only one dwarf selected to dump), the route or timing is not up to the player.  This is a trivial situation but applies to nearly all, with the military encounters being the most out of player control.  The player also has no control over dwarf preferences, likes, elections, artifacts, brawls, religion, children, or, dare I say it, cat adoption.  The player's actions only are reactionary to these aspects, which highly suggests that there is a power greater than the player.  As a result, for the player to be Armok, Armok cannot be an omnipotent god, which is contrary to the fundamentals of dwarven thought.

In the General Will case, the argument rests on the player providing necessary provisions and actions for the dwarves that otherwise they would overlook in their lifelong pursuit of beer and industry.  This is done for the betterment of the fortress.  Alas, as a player, I do not always work for the betterment of the fortress and I strongly suspect most players do not.  I am not referencing the mindless torture of dwarves and kittens, which may or may not have occurred in my forts, but I rather am referring to the meticulous construction of complex structures in a fort.  Is it really for the betterment of a fortress to have fifty individual bedrooms made only out of diorite?  Would a little bit of microcline in the constructed walls of one or two of bedrooms reduce the quality of life of the dwarves?  Or, are the dwarves really better off if the surface fortress that they never go into is 5 z levels instead of 4 z levels?  Or, does quality of life really increase when you carefully count out the size of rooms before digging for the only purpose of making the entire z level look symmetric?  I think the answer is obviously, nay-nay.  The player does these tasks not for the betterment of the dwarves and the fortress but rather for some obsessive compulsive, megalomaniac purpose.  No dwarf is better off in purely a diorite fortress or a surface fort supported by a single bar of kangaroo soap.

That means the player is something else.  What we know:

1. The player has a lot of power of planning and ordering in a general sense
2. The player typically does not have power over individual's actions
3. A lot of times dwarves do not act according to the desire of the player's orders, causing "fun"
4. Goals and purposes of the player vary according to the player's whims, and this can have huge effects on the fate of the fortress and dwarves
5. Consideration of the preferences of individual, or even all, dwarves is rarely considered by the player
6. The player often does not notice, care, or even think about the most basic facts about the majority of their dwarves, such as gender, sexual preference, personnel ambitions, or family relationships
7. Players often select dwarves for positions of power, such as mayor or nobles, that share similar preferences to the player, such as liking short swords, green glass, or diorite
8. The player often is more concerned with the military, war, and punishing dwarves that have done actions contrary to the player's wishes than dealing with issues that would increase the happiness of the dwarvish majority
9. The player tends to build structures with extreme gaudiness and using the most precious metals and gems in its construction
10. The player tends to horde wealth for seemingly no other purpose than hording wealth
11. The player was never elected to his/her position and cannot be removed without extreme violence or boredom (aka, death of a fort)

Based on the above, I am thinking the closest comparison of the player is to a 'want-to-be all powerful' dictator.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Self-drowning caravan?!
« on: January 23, 2017, 08:36:04 pm »
What was the water height level?  I've never done an embark close to the ocean due to FPS fears.

I have had caravans and visitors path through my moat, get stuck because they can't swim, and drown or die from dehydration (go figure) after a while.  In each case the water level wasn't at 7/7 and usually around 3/4 or so.

Dunamisedeos, I must believe that it is a long overdue form of dwarvish justice she would have wanted this.  Those who live by murder, mayhem, and slaughter the sword die by being overwhelmed by monsters and evil creatures that think the same way as you and are probably your relatives the sword.

7
The goblin attack finally came.  There were hundreds.  Blood, Steel, Gore, and a Retracting Bridge.

Madam Mayor took down her first two waves of visitors while casualties mounted at the gate of Stabcaves.

But the third wave was too much...

She slaughtered twenty or so goblins, trolls and beak dogs before... yes... she had too much.

She went down fighting with a battle axe, but her preferred weapon was always a spear.

The new mayor, a 125 year old miner who was one of the original seven and militia commander when Madam Mayor first joined the army, has a preference for spears.  Out of respect, I think so...

Suddenly realised how much of the fort is painted green....

Yah, nobody cleaned up from the parties from the day before.  Pretty gross.  The entrance of Stabcaves looks like a frathouse the night after final's week.

Las Vegas = goblins...  I can go with that.

Can't agree with humans in Colorado.  My brother lives there.  He is definitely and elf, probably an elf lord or something knowing him.  (BTW, he must have been adopted as I have no elf tendencies myself :) )

Madam Mayor is in charge of this fortress.  Don't cross her... she is very mean stern.  This be a special cat.  I couldn't figure out how to make a cat eared hat for each of the marching dwarves, but it does seems that DF figured out without me how to do the next best scenario.

11
Out of respect and solidarity for all the women marching today, my Madam Mayor organized a march around the great fortress of Stabcaves.  Here is her leading the march (she is the yellow down arrow, she is rather mad...):

The march began with no violence.  Before long though something strange has happened.  Very strange, I have no idea how it happened...

Look right by the entrance.  It's a cat!  Marching dwarves are following a cat.  But, perhaps it is just chance.  After all, all my cats are stationed in rodent duty and assigned to pastures.  None adopted.  Even if they were, I've never seen a cat follow a patrol route.  Maybe it is just lost...

Nope.  The cat has marched twice around the fort.  And it keeps going. Before long all the dwarves (except a very small minority in the bar ignoring the whole thing; probably discussing the media or something) are following the cat.

Strange occurrence?  Or are the dwarves really feeling some solidarity here?

Goblins come in the winter months, but I find it hard to see snow birds as goblins...

That said, I feel terrible writing this but it is SOOO obvious and my fort is plagued by them.

Snow birds = old buzzards

...you may find it necessary to remove the [ALCOHOL_DEPENDENT] tag from dwarves under the creature_standard.txt in your world's raws...

Based on this statement Rethi-Eli that I have taken out of context, I am concerned that indeed you ARE an elf spy.

Good enough for a few steel battle axes!  Gotta say it is an ideal dwarfy fortress area.  Now, the elves, humans, and goblins?

I'll take the easy one...  Californian = elf.  Not all, but some... :-\
