Do I take the one that would be on the right if I were looking from my falcon character's point of view, or do I take the one that's closer to the east?

Um, ok...
How many map tiles are there in a world tile?

I know during map creation you can generate map sizes from pocket (17x17) all the way to large (257x257).

I understand those are the number of tiles as depicted in the Shift+Q screen, yes?

Now, how many on-foot tiles do I have to walk to go from one world map tile to another? From what I can conclude, the wiki seems to mean 768 tiles, but I'm still rather confused.

64
Oh! Guess I should look into a 3D visualiser then.
A little less related, but related nonetheless: how is save compatibility between 0.42.06 and 0.43.05?

65
So... I started playing DF last week, getting the latest release of LNP (containing DF 0.42.06) was easy enough. The Phoebus 16 texture pack was set to ON by default. But then DF started crashing (pretty often) on my 64-bit system. Hearing from replies that 0.43.05 has better support for 64-bit systems, I downloaded that, ran Dwarf Fortress.exe directly and played a bit. No crashes so far!

Now, I want to bring back the Phoebus 16 texture pack and the TWBT thingy that displays things below my Z-level better. How do I go about doing that? LNP doesn't seem to be able to enable DFHack for 0.43.05, which seems required for TWBT.

I'm stepping up from being a 'lazy newb' to a 'busy newb'!

first you need to tell us if you used the basic generator or the advanced one. the basic one has lower maximum values compared to advanced

I used the one called 'Create New World!', not the one with 'advanced parameters'.

67
Well, I tried to generate a world at maximum settings.
Set them all, pressed y, turned off the monitor, went to bed for 4 hours...

When I came back, it had crashed on the 1050th year.

(Using LNP, it says DF is version 0.42.06; processor priority: Above Normal)
RAM: 8GB
CPU: i3-4160@3.60GHz
OS: Windows 7 64-bit
CPU Temperature throughout generation: 60-63 degrees Celsius (140-145.4 Fahrenheit)
CPU Temperature idle: 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit)

It is not impossible to generate, right?

-How can I tell if a skill/attribute has been maxed out?
-Can you quit without saving?

69
thought I had a pretty strong character

I have to ask, can you tell us any specific stats you had (super strength, legendary dodger, etc)?

...Any other files to not forget about? The gamelog.txt, detailing the announcements that had happened so far, is next to Dwarf Fortress.exe instead.

Got it
(There's so many more things I have to know...!)

- I want to copy my save data. What files must I look out for?

Awesome!
- Also I just found out that throwing can be tiring (got the 'tired' status effect after lots of training). Please confirm?

- Lastly for now, can I fly at night high in the mountains (like, near the altitude cap / edge of outer space, maybe?) and not have to deal with Bogeymen?

What thrown projectile gives the best damage-to-weight ratio? (i.e. light but deadly)

(Ongoing conversation)

Oh hey, I see you edited your first reply; thanks, things are a little more clearer.

- I understand a single thrown bolt does less damage than a single shot from a crossbow? (I still appreciate the higher throw rate)

- Can I 'express my values' - all of them - to an NPC to thoroughly know what they value? Might anyone with a low 'truth' value lie about their mindsets?

- How do I increase my 'Dodger' skill fast?

- How do I increase my 'Endurance' attribute fast? Swimming as a Peregrine Falcon man doesn't seem to change anything in the z screen.

- I want a better pair of underpants; preferably briefs or boxers. I've only ever found large clothes (i.e. 'sized for humans'); the clothes I'm wearing now do not have any 'large' or 'small' (sized for dwarves) prefix.

Also losing your mind is fun. Going off to look for it? That's the good stuff.
