DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Face Palm moments you had in Dwarf Fortress

For some reason my dwarves have chosen to include great axes in their standard embark equipment instead of regular battle axes. Of course nobody can weild them. Not sure why, the game is unmodded.
You could keep them for humans but they're really not of very good quality.

ETA:  Apologies for extreme necro but I can't find a delete button.  Any janny who wants to can feel free to zap it.
Hm. I just revealed the map once again, because I don't want to open anything on accident, and it appears that there were several parties going on in the last few years.

- 2 dead forgotten beasts
- 2 of the cyclops tribe are dead, one of them the leader (aw, I wanted to put her into a cage or something...)
- 3 more forgotten beasts were sitting in the middle of a former troglodyte camp.
- and a giant toad is roaming around in the nearby cavern into which I had intended to expand.

Harumph.

It is normal that forgotten beasts appear in fortresses that didn't even have 20 dwarves yet? Can't say that I like this.
It's a combo of wealth and population.  Did you make an unusually valuable artifact or have lots of gold, gems, spiked balls, etc?

Paperwork. To be submitted by the player.

Each dig, each build, each lever-pulling, every civil/legal/martial decision needs to be accompanied by fully-documented requests for authorisation, and the rest.

Yes, you can still flood the surface with magma, but you need the proper planning permissions, environmental impact statements, liability waivers for third parties and agents...
Mandatory bidding contests between contractors for every single task.  You have to take whoever charges the least, even if they're completely incompetent actually to do it.

Nobles can now ban the mere possession of items retroactively.  So any time some noble bans something, every single person who ever possessed such an item is guilty of a serious crime and needs to be sentenced in the justice menu.

A mime where all mimes are mimed by mimes because mimes mimes mimes.

Every single bee in a beehive should be considered an historic figure and they should have preferences and bad and good emotions that are constantly tracked, and should be able to go insane just like dwarves when stressed.

There should be food men like there are animal men, so you could have a dwarven cheese man, or a strawberry roast man.

The trolls were presumably casualties. Note: Trolls can climb. Seen the bastards climb up into an open window cavity I had high on a natural cliff wall. They don't climb as well as goblins though.
I once had a drain to get rid of the water from a waterfall (fed by a brook on the surface) going all the way down to the first cavern layer.  It had a grate on top of it.  So there was a constant waterfall down about 50 z layers.  I had a troll swim up the entire thing and smash open the grate.  I didn't know they can do that if they could access the top.  The troll was in pretty bad shape with a page long list of minor injuries when he got to the top but it was impressive.

Foolish bastards!
My foolproof method (well not really mine I read it elsewhere):

Magma channel level.

XXXXXXXXXXM
CCCCCCCCBXM
XXXXXXXXXXM

X=Walls
M=Magma
C=Channel
B=Bridge

On the top level, I have the channel and at the square right before where I intend to breach, I build a bridge after channeling down.  I prefer to use non-magma-safe material for this.  Then I wall off the channel level so nobody can get in.

The breach level.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXX
UCCCCCCCCCCCRX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXX

U, Upward staircase
R, Ramp

This is in the z-layer directly below the magma channel.  If you don't like a leftover ramp, I think you can deconstruct the ramp originally present and construct a new one out of non-magma-safe material.  It doesn't matter what direction the hallway comes in so long as the ramp is directly below the bridge.

Now double check and make sure the magma channel is inaccessible.  And designate the X directly to the right of the bridge on the channel level.  Watch as the dwarf goes down to the corridor under the magma channel, stands on the ramp, and digs upward diagonally into where you want to breach.

When he's out, build a floor on the stairwell to keep anyone from going in there.

The channel will fill up, the bridge will melt, and you're done.

If you're really concerned with safety you can build out of magma-safe material but I don't like having the ramp and bridge around.  The dwarf will have plenty of time to get out, though, unless that "idiot dwarf decides to fall asleep" thing happens, so make sure you have enough beds.  Always make sure of that.

Musical instruments made of forgotten beasts.
Most components can be made of bone so you can literally already do that.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?

I'd had the usual "vile force of darkness" invasions where the vile force just wandered off with no actual combat.

And a forgotten beast that got killed by a stray cat.

And despite being on a volcano embark, no metals but copper and, thanks Armok, cassiterite, so we have a pretty solid bronze economy.

I was still kind of worried when we finally got a "vile force" that had beak dogs, trolls, and actually dangerous critters.

Turns out bronze weapons and armor actually get that shit done.  Thanks for your goblinite you fools!  Next time you pull this trick you're going to be facing your own steel!

If you have no iron on your map, and your civilization apparently has no access to iron ores, steel anvils may be your only source of steel and are, so far as I can tell, the cheapest thing to purchase made of steel.  I suppose there's goblinite, but the only "vile force of darkness" I've had are those "invasions" where a couple of the horde show up on the very edge of the map and immediately disappear again, presumably because they're actually on their way somewhere else.

Sometimes dwarves begin rhyming against each other uncontrolllably in a great cosmic harmony.
But if someone says "orange" it causes a tantrum spiral.

Maybe try changing the scaling setting from the last paragraph of this Windows section https://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php?title=DF2014:Installation#Windows
And that was the charm, thanks!  Possibly that should be more prominent, but I don't know how often it happens.
