As much as the timing of this is clearly suspicious and the justification for that timing a transparently laughable ruse, the fact is this guy needed to go.  The level of response to it approaches hysteria.  It's not a hill I'd want to die (or impeach) on.  Many of the very people flipping out about him being fired now were screaming for the guy's head since before November.

Yeah, there is some hypocrisy going around, but you just don't fire the person investigating you without it looking like a coverup or something.

I agree with the appearances, and it was utterly insane to do this at the same time as attending a press conference, excluding American media from it and only allowing Russian propaganda outlets, and then meeting with Henry Kissinger like all in 24 hours.

If he isn't the most incompetent President ever, he is a master troll.  Or he might be both.

See, here's your problem. Never engage them directly! Use spear traps, spider and regular traps, marksdwarfs, mine cart shotguns and maybe even other forgotten beasts! Guile is always the preferable option.

Agreed!  Especially because in this case I had even tested my "lock down the caverns" lever to see if it worked.  It did, so I could have just ignored that thing and dug around the issue.  But I just had to say "fuck it" and go full dumbass instead.

It was fun, though.  I had the best combat animation I've ever seen in the game, when there was a fight between my militia commander and this thing next to a magma forge.  It turned out to be a building destroyer, so it wrecked the forge before charging my militia commander, who promptly dodged into the newly created hole and fell, while I had him on "Follow," down into the magma and then sunk down every layer before dying.

I realized at that point my "fuck it we can take this thing" estimate of the situation was overly optimistic.

I know there are smarter ways of doing this and until recently, I've been absurdly cautious, but dying in some ridiculous catastrophe is more fun than dying of FPS which is just depressing, especially when it's otherwise an interesting fort.  The embark is also incredibly rich in all forms of coal, has every single iron ore, and flux, and I just found a relatively generous vein of adamantine, so I just decided at the outset that "maniacally aggressive almost without reason" was going to be the strategy and the fact that we'll all be kitted out with adamantine soon has increased my resolve in that department.

(I will take a little more care that my champions don't go diving in magma again, though.  Losing adamantine weapons that way is painful.)

Forgotten beasts! So many of the goddamn things! 2 a season! I barely have the time to set up the elaborate spider+table+hallway of cage traps trap to cage the damn creatures. Finally got one whose deadly dust causes full body rotting. Gonna build him into a turret for all my invaders visitors to die horribly in front of admire.

I sent my best team against a shelled monstrous mongoloid snail whatever with deadly spittle and lost half my fort in this reckless endeavor, because it was in the route to where I'd just found a spire of adamantine.

So when the next forgotten beast, that showed up INSTANTLY after I'd finished the first, turned out to be a giant humanoid made of vomit and with stuff I didn't care about, I wasn't going to retreat from that.  A peasant slapped it to death.

During trading with the Mountainhome, suddenly a fight broke out because a dwarf had become enraged.  It took me a bit to figure out, because I looked at combat logs and saw there was a dwarf fighting another dwarf, but in the depot instead of the tavern.

So I sent the squad that included that dwarf somewhere a few levels away and amazingly enough, they actually left instead of all piling on.

It turned out the enraged dwarf was one of the traders.  It wasn't a loyalty cascade, though.

He had just become enraged because of flies and eventually calmed down, and that was the only time I had any message that it was the flies that had enraged him.

That guy needs to relax.

I assume that particular visiting dwarf had a particular antipathy to flies so this caused an especially strong reaction?

DF Suggestions / Re: Fishing rods

Other ways of catching fish would be interesting. I don't know exactly how the game handles it now, but catching fish with your bare hands could of course be a thing as well; as a perhaps dangerous way to catch fish before you've gained the equipment needed.

They dangle their beards into the water.

I like to use N to label each lever, so if I cannot remember I can just read the label.
Cavern bridge
Other cavern bridge
Cavern door (that is actually a bridge)
Trap out (now was the the part facing toward the surface or the fortress?)
North cavern block (that's south of the other three cavern doors above)
South cavern block (that's in cavern 3 whereas everything else is in cavern 1)

Using N is a great idea. Just make sure to actually label things half-decently...

Instead of labeling bridges, I like to make a rock mechanism at the same time as the bridge, and out of the same material, then make the lever from that mechanism.

Then they're color coded.  The rutile lever opens the rutile bridge, the granite lever opens the granite bridge, etc.  If I try to get fancier I always forget what my dumb labeling scheme means when I have to use it.

I made this for you, bat-hammer guy.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Thanks!  That's awesome.

In other news, have just found adamantine, so next is somehow screwing up my road-dar and releasing hell again.

So my dwarf made an artifact wooden crown called falseburst it said i shall name you falseburst that was not satisfying
is that a bug but it is really funny!

I wish dwarves would commit suicide after perpetrating artifacts like that.

It would save me the trouble of setting up bridge dwarf launchers to launch them into the magma sea.

My first fortress was just destroyed  :-\
I was mining out some new spaces for my sheriff and manager when around 15 new citizens arrived and just stood there idling in a pile by the wagon. Soon afterwards I got a message that was something like "Were-elephant has been spotted". I immediately recruited all of the new citizens into a militia and ordered them to attack the were-elephant. By the time a hammerdwarf killed it the monster had killed all except five. I immediately retired the fort after.
The were-elephant killed in roughly this order: a few randoms->militia commander->pile of guys near wagon->expedition leader-> sheriff->the rest of the peasants. All that was left was pools of blood, mangled corpses, and limbs strewn about. The only reason I managed to kill it is because it transformed into a goblin halfway through the fight. All in all it was a pretty good way to end my fortress.

Congratulations on a pretty cool way to end a fortress.

Eh, dunno. It really depends on the authors of novels as to how serious Warhammer 40k is. Like every new edition adds more SERIOUS stuff, but based on art alone, you really can't think either of these overdesigned figures can be taken seriously unless you are Edgemeister Supreme, the god-emperor of Edge.

The problem, though, is somewhat similar to that of media like 4chan.  If you are ironically Edgemeister Supreme, you inevitably attract people who are that exact thing, but serious about it.  You end up actually being what you started out just pretending to be for cheap yuks.

Irony can be so ironic sometimes.  Don't ya think?

Probably she just did some research on the psychological profile of such a person and copied it 1:1 because that's easy. That, and deeply nuanced characterization doesn't have much of an effect on how people rate a work of BDSM erotica.

She actually just mindlessly imitated Twilight.  And Twilight itself had these themes.

The entire novel literally started out as a Twilight fan fiction, and was only retconned into being a separate thing when the author realized it had broad market appeal.

I'm no fan of the work itself, but the author is a canny businesswoman and very cleverly and successfully marketed a derivative work.

Turn them all into soldiers or something and send them deep into the caves.

I was actually thrilled to have a forgotten beast show up right after the useless migrants, but when I sent them at it, a cat knocked it unconscious before they got to it.  But then they punched it for three months straight, constantly passing out from exhaustion, before it somehow finally died.

I suppose that it would be more polite to comment on how the round went. Like "Man [An enemy opponent] is way too good" or "You guys almost won but then [Hanzo main] happened"

Is this the kind of thing they're doing in school now?  Someone steals a pencil, and the victim of the crime gets in trouble?
